We propose a new method for measuring coliform group in water. In this method we measure the pressure increase rate with time due to the generation of CO₂ gas formed during the fermentation of coli. Experimental results by constructed instrument using pressure and temperature sensors show that we can determine the amounts of coli in 4∼6 hours, which usually takes 24∼72 hours conventional methods.

Real time water quality monitoring system in a large area has been developed. The system is hierarchically composed of CCMS(Central Control and Monitoring System), data loggers and water pollution measuring instruments, which enable systematic and efficient data collection and management. Also in this work we designed and constructed the instruments for measuring basic elements in water quality such as salinity, electrical conductivity, temperature, dissolved oxygen and the amount of coli in water.

A prototype for measuring the amount of colon bacilli in water has been constructed using pressure sensor. The amount of total coliforms is determined by measuring the pressure increase rate with time. Experimental results show that the latency time for measuring the amount of coil is about 4-6 hours compared with 24-72 hours with the previous measurement methods.

On-line water quality monitoring system has been develeped. This system is hierachily composed of CCMS(Central Control and Monitoring System), data loggers and water pollution measuring instruments. CCMS is implemented on IBM PC with the Microsoft Windows. For the efficient control, storage and security of data, we adopt the network server and the database server operating under LAN environments. Data logger receive, analyze and store the measured data from measering instruments and transmitts them to host computer. It can also monitor and calibrate the water pollution measuring equipments. Engineering samples for measuring disolved oxygen, pH, salinity, conductivity, temperture and the amounts of colon bacilli has been constructed.
