Vol.32 No.5
A phenolic compound isolated from the ethylacetate extract of Duchesnea indica (Andr.) Focke (Rosaceae) showed antimicrobial activities against Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella dysentriae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This compound was identified as ellagic acid by spectral analysis.

The analgesic, anticonvulsant and anti-inflammatory actives of leaves of Hedera rhombea Bean were evaluated. The methanol and butanol fractions showed considerable analgesic activity, but no anticonvulsant activities. Anti-inflammatory activity was found in the methanol, butanol and ether fractions by carrageenin induced edema test.

The whole plants of Selaginella tamariscina, Orostachycis japonicus, the cortex of Ulmus mandshurica, and the wood of Alnus japonica have been used as folk medicine for treating cancer. The cytotoxic activity of these plants were tested using a calorimetric tetrazolium assay (MTT assay). S. tamariscina and A. japonica showed mild $IC_{50}$ value, comparing with O. japonicus and U. mandshurica. So, MeOH extracts of S. tamariscina and A. japonica were partitioned into $CHCl_3$, EtOAc and n-BuOH, successively. The $CHCl_3$, EtOAc and BuOH fractions of S. tamariscina and A. japonica showed low percent of survival against $P_{388}$ and $MKN_{45}$ cells respectively. To isolate active components, they were subjected to silica gel column chromatography. Compound I was obtained from EtOAc extracts of S. tamariscina and identified as amentoflavone by chemical and spectral analysis. Amentoflavone inhibited the survival of P388 cells dose dependently, while not clearly inhibited that of $MKN_{45}$ cells.
Codonopsis ussuriensis 의 생리작용에 관한 연구
이인란(Ihn Rhan Lee),김외련(Wae Ryun Kim) 한국생약학회 1989 생약학회지 Vol.20 No.4
The effect of Codonopsis ussuriensis on red blood cell(RBC) count in rats was investigated. Among various fractions tested, a significant increase of RBC was observed in animal group treated with ether extract. From the ether soluble fraction, two compounds were isolated and their structures were elucidated as α-spinasterol and β-sitosterol by chemical and spectral analyses.

A white crystlline substance, compound H (C29H46O) mp 165~6o, [alpha]D+24.7o (CHCl4) was isolated from the ether extract of the underground part of Codonopsis pilosula (Franchet) Nannfeldt (Campanulaceae). Its chemical structure was identified as stigmasta-7,22-dien-3-one (alpha-spinasterone).
Vol.20 No.2
This study was conducted to purify and characterize a polysaccharide fraction from whole parts of Duchesnea indica (Andr.) Focke, which was previously reported to show an antitumor activity by us. The plant was extracted with 5% ethanol for 3 days in the room temperature. The extract was dialyzed by 5% ethanol, and then concentrated by extraction with excess N-butanol, followed by gel filtration on Sephadex G-25 using 5% ethanol as an eluent solvent to give two peaks named Fr. a and b. Each was composed of gallic acid, hexose, pentose, uronic acid and protein, indicating that both fractions were tannic polysaccharide containing protein. Heat treatment of them yielded gallic acid less polysaccharides. They showed a colony stimulating factor activity.

This study is about the five species of the genus Thalictrum growing abundantly in South Korea. Dried roots of plants; T. aquilegifolium var. japonica, T. simplex var. offine, T. actaefolium, T. tuberiferum were compared by morphological observation and screening test on the ingredient extracted by methanol, ether etc.. The experiments by thin-layer chromatography was at tempted to find out the similarity and the difference among them. In conclusion, the author found that : 1) A special component similar to coumarin was found under UV-ray from T. actaefolium. 2) By thin-layer chromatography, they show the corresponding spot supposed to be that of berberine and magnoflorine according to the TABLE IV. Therefore it is worthwhile considering that Thalictrum species would be a substitution for Epimedium species used as a tonic. 3) Thalictrum species has resemblance of ingredient and chemotaxonomy gives more help to classify them than the morphology.
