        성별 및 소재 흥미도와 한국 고등학생들의 어휘습득 간의 상관관계

        The purpose of the current study is to investigate whether there is a gender effect in the vocabulary acquisition of high school learners of English as a foreign language; whether there is a correlation between the differences in gender and theme interests; and how theme interests affects vocabulary acquisition. To answer these research questions, we performed the following experiment: Two tests were administered to the subjects of 200 10th graders, 100 male and 100 females students. The first test was on the vocabulary words from the texts of five most popular themes. The second test was designed to measure students` vocabulary acquisition of the most popular and unpopular themes. These tests consist of translation tasks, syntactic structure questions, and the theme-specific interests questionnaire based on the ten themes selected from the seventeen themes embodied in English textbooks of the 7th National Curriculum. Major research findings are as follows: First, male and female students do share their most popular themes. Secondly, the scores of syntactic structure tests are higher than those of translation tests, particularly for nouns. Finally, the more popular a theme is, the higher score the subjects gained in its translation and syntactic tests. (Kyungpook National University)

        영어과 교육과정 개발에 관한 쟁점 연구

        The purpose of this study is to identify main issues in the curriculum development of English. The conclusions from this study are summarized as follows: First, for the foundation stage, the following two issues should be given serious consideration. (i) What should the nature of English curriculum should be? Should it be content based or process based? (ii) Who should be main curriculum developers? Are they supposed to be experts (language experts or education experts) or teachers. Second, for the organization stage, the following three points are at issue: (i) When an English curriculum is being made, the following pairs of relations are likely to be involved. Which one is of more importance ? Horizontal and vertical, the features of English or general rules, the quality and quantity balance between English and the other subjects, etc. (ii) The issues on goal establishment should be given their due importance, as well. On which side do we have to place more stress? Goal oriented curriculum or standard oriented curriculum? For the content systems, we have to pay attention to the question of which form is the more proper. Third, for the implementation stage, the following two issues should be dealt with seriously: (i) How should we make a decision on the subject selection and credit, and learning quantity?         한국 영어교과서의 소재에 관한 온톨로지 개발

        철학적으로 온톨로지는 세상에 존재하는 것에 대한 연구를 의미한다. 따라서 형이상학의 한 분야를 이룬다. 하지만 인공인지 분야에서 온톨로지는 세상에 대한 우리의 개념화을 명시적으로 나타내는 것을 의미한다. 정보추출, 자연어처리 분야에 다양한 온톨로지가 연구 개발되어 사용되고 있다. 본 연구의 목적은 한국의 영어교과서에 나타난 소재에 관한 영역 온톨로지(domain ontology)를 어떻게 개발할 수 있는 지를 보여주고자 한다. 이를 위하여 영어교육과정(2006-75)에 제시된 19가지의 영어교과서 소재를 기반으로 가장 기초가 되는 개념 다섯 가지를 정하였다. 이를 바탕으로 기초 온톨로지(base ontology)를 구성하였다. 그리고 14종 영어교과서 각 단원의 소재를 분석하여 얻은 소재개념으로 이 기초 온톨로지를 확장하는 방식으로 한국영어교과서소재 영역 온톨로지 구축 방안을 제시하였다. Philosophically ontology is the study of being or existence and forms the basic subject matter of metaphysics. In AI, it means an explicit specification of a conceptualization (Gruber 1993). Various types of ontologies have been developed for better results of NLP including information retrieval (Guarino1998, Huang et al 2010). The main purpose of the current study is to show how to develop a domain ontology of themes of English textbooks used in Korea. To this purpose, a list of the themes is made through the analysis of English textbooks, and a base ontology is created based on the concepts for the themes. Furthermore, the current study tries to show how to expand the base ontology into a full-fledged English textbook theme ontology.

        한국 고등학교 1학년의 영어 중간언어 실태 분석: 명시적 및 묵시적 구문지식을 중심으로

        The present study aims at investigating what interlanguage state Korean learners of English, particularly 10th graders, are in with regard to the 12 linguistic forms of English most frequently dealt with in English textbooks in Korea. To achieve this aim, this study measured the subjects` implicit and explicit knowledge of the forms. The result shows that the former is far less acquired than the latter. This suggests that the subjects be given more exposure to English communicative contexts.

        몰입교육과정에 대한 올바른 이해보급의 필요와 한국에서 실행 시 고려사항

        The presidential immersion education initiative which had been undertaken in South Korea in early 2008 encountered strong public opposition. Since then, consideration of immersion education has largely been sidetracked, despite the fact that immersion education could be a viable option for English education in Korea. The main objections seem to have been the result of a lack of correct information about immersion education. In this paper are outlined the key goals, theoretical basis and curriculum typical of immersion education as they have been implemented in the United States and Canada. The intention is to correct misunderstandings of immersion education in both academia and the society at large. Certain terms related to immersion education may have lead to misperceptions. Preferable alternatives are suggested. Major concerns regarding immersion education in Korea are reviewed, particularly those pertaining to the pace of Korean language development and academic achievement as well as identity conflicts. Finally, suggestions are made with respect to areas to be addressed in order for immersion education to become established in Korea.

        화용적 현상으로서의 배타성

          Exhaustivity is well-documented for the interpretation of answers of such question-answer pairs as "Who solved the problem-John". That is, the answer is likely to mean that only John solved the problem. Such a phenomenon is also dealt with in this paper. The current paper shows that exhaustivity is a pragmatic phenomenon, against Szabolcsi (1981), Groenendijk & Stokhof (1983)(hereafter G&S), Sevi (2005), and more recently Fox (2006) where exhaustivity is treated as a semantic or lexical phenomenon. The argument of the current paper relies on a meaning computation mechanism, which is based on focus-introduced Horn scales and scalar principle or Neo-Gricean Maxim of Quantity in line with Sauerland (2004).

        A Look at Misusage in English Textbooks in Korea

        The purpose of this research is to identify and categorize the misused expressions found in recently published middle school English textbooks for the 7th Curriculum, and to propose a less controversial alternative expression to the misused one. Six more popular textbooks out of the thirteen were analyzed from the seventh grade English textbooks. Pilot studies were conducted for those expressions in question and at least twenty-five native English speakers of different origin participated in each pilot study. Due to the fact that the books in question are the actual textbooks used in our schools to teach English, they should not contain any controversial or questionable expressions. No doubt, all possible efforts should be made to improve the textbooks up to the extent that they contain only clear-cut, properly used English.
