        Macrophages are not only efficient phagocytic cells, but are also active secretory cells which synthesize and release a wide variety of products that play a role in host defense. It has been shown that human and animal peritoneal macrophages, stimulated either in vutro or in vivo, released certain soluble products in their environment, such as bacteriolytic enzymes, complement components and many pharmacological mediators including interferon. Recently, we demonstrated that mouse peritoneal macrophages stimulated in vivo with bacterial adjuvants of BCG, propionibacterium acnes and /or Candida albicans inhibited strongly the extracellular growth of C.albicans, whereas unstimulated normal ones did not. The data indicated that macrophages stimulated with bacterial adjuvants rekeased certain "fungiostatic sudstances." It was also suggested that the presence of such fungiostatic sudstances released by " activated" macrophages in the circulatory system may play a role in host defense against systemic infections with C.albicans. However, neither the levels of macrophage products in the serum nor their origins have been clarified. In this study, acorrekation between the levels of macrophage products in the serum and peritoneal fluids of mice immunized with a bacterial adjuvant was investigated. Experimentally, it is imoractical to measure at once all products released by activated macrophages. Therefore, an attemp was made, in this study, to measure the macrephage cytoplasmic antigens of activated macrophage both in peritoneal fluid and in serum by means of single radial immunodiffusion and Ouchterlony double-diffusion test using rabbit antisera aganist the whole cytoplasmic antigens of mouse peritoneal macrophage. The results are summerized as follows: The levels of macrophage cytoplasmic antigen in the peritoneal fluids were higher than those in the sera of normal mice. In the mice immunized with a bacterial adjvant, the level of macrophage cytoplasmic antigen in the peritoneal fluids and the sera increased 5 times in 3 hours post-immunization over the levels of normal mice. Although there were no significant differences between the total volumes of macrophages cytoplasmic antigen in peritoneal fluids and in the sera during the period from 6 to 24 hours post-immunization, an increment of macrophage cytoplasmic antigens in the serum in 3 days postimmunization was twice that of peritoneal fluids. Thereafter, the quantity of macrophage antigen in the serum gradually increased, whereas that in the peritoneal fluids inversely decreased up to the level of normal mice. Peak levels of macrophage antigens in peritoneal fluids and the serum were attained 6 hours and 3 to 5 days post-immunization, respectively. The measurements of soluble precipitating antigen titers of macrophage fraction by means of Ouchterlony double-diffusion showed that no apparent difference in the titers between the peritoneal fluids and the sera obtained during the period from 3 to 48 hours post-immunization, but the titers in the serum up to 5 days post-immunization was significantly high. The fungiostatic activities of the peritoneal fluids and the sera obtained from mnice immunized with a bacterial adjuvant were markediy enhanced compared with those of normal mice. However, the fungiostatic activities of sera obtained from mice which exhibited the highest macrophage products in the peritoneal fluids and the sera was revealed by Ouchterlony test. This study indicates that the appearance of fungiostatic substances in the serum is highly associated with activation of macrophages in the peritoneal cavity, bur the macrophage antigens in the sera and peritoneal fluids are not identical in their antigenicity or in fungiostatic activity.

        기후변화에 따른 남극 로스해 반응에 관한 고찰: 남극 로스해 관측의 중요성

        The Ross Sea, Antarctica plays an important role in the formation of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) which is the densest water mass in global thermohaline circulation. Of the AABW, 25% is formed in the Ross Sea, and sea ice formation at the polynya (ice-free area) developed in front of ice shelves of the Ross Sea is considered as a pivotal mechanism for AABW production. For this reason, monitoring the Ross Sea variations is very important to understand changes of global thermohaline circulation influenced by climate change. In addition, the Ross Sea is also regarded as a natural laboratory in investigating ice-ocean interactions owing to the development of the polynya. In this article, I introduce characteristics of the Ross Sea described in previous observational studies, and investigate variations that have occurred in the Ross Sea in the past and those taking place in the present. Furthermore, based on these observational results, I outline variations or changes that can be anticipated in the Ross Sea in the future, and make an appeal to researchers regarding the importance and necessity of continuous observations in the Ross Sea.

        4차 산업혁명시대의 교회의 역할과 방향

        With the unimaginably rapid advent of the 4th Industrial Revolution Era, companies which predicted a change and dominated the market in advance although political and economic predictions missed the mark globally are strengthening their control over the market and many countries of the world are struggling to use the 4th Industrial Revolution based on their key industries. As the 4th Industrial Revolution requires a new insight on the existence of human beings and human values beyond the boundary between industry and technology different from the past three industrial revolutions, it will come as a more intensified conflict across the entire areas of church. In such situations, the current Korean churches began practical theology-based discussions on the 4th Industrial Revolution Era and the religious world needs to explore alternatives more actively at the overall level. The role of church in the 4th Industrial Revolution Era does not lie in knowing how to use scientific technology. More essentially, it lies in what alternatives churches can look for against uncertainty and imbalance as much as they change at rapid rate. In this study, the researcher looks at the characteristics of the 4th Industrial Revolution Era and the reality of Korean churches and proposes the role of Korean churches in two directions for the 4th Industrial Revolution Era. The first is Christian spiritual restoration, which puts its basis on the essence of christian faith. Christian spirituality needs to be restored because churches have a mission to preach that humans are a creation of God that scientific technology cannot replace although it continues to evolve and spiritual beings that can get acquainted with God. The second is coping actively with social changes and reinforcing community spirit. In the 4th Industrial Revolution Era, churches need to be a community that can communicate more, and be flexible and autonomous in forming a relationship. In the 4th Industrial Revolution Era, Korean churches have to start again from spiritual restoration and community. They have to play their role with interests in people, society, and scientific technology that they had missed outside the church walls so far. Churches, as a spiritual community will have to carry out their mission with spirituality and sociality combined by establishing self-identity and practicing sociality in the relationship with neighbors in the 4th Industrial Revolution Era. 4차 산업혁명 시대가 상상할 수 없는 빠른 속도로 도래하면서 세계적으로도 정치와 경제적 예측이 빗나가지만, 변화를 먼저 예측하고 선점한 기업들은 이를 활용하여 시장지배력을 강화하고 있고, 세계 주요국들은 앞 다투어 국가별 핵심 산업 분야를 주축으로 4차 산업혁명을 활용하고 있다. 4차 산업혁명은 지난 세 차례의 산업혁명 때와는 다른 산업과 기술의 경계 문제를 넘어 인간 존재와 가치에 대한 새로운 통찰을 요구하고 있기 때문에 교회도 전 영역에 걸쳐 더욱 심화한 갈등으로 다가올 것이다. 이런 상황에서 현재 한국교회는 4차 산업혁명 시대에 대한 실천신학적 논의를 시작하였으며, 교계의 전체적인 차원에서 연합하여 더 적극적으로 대안을 모색해나갈 필요가 있다. 제4차 산업혁명 시대에서 교회의 역할은 과학기술 개발을 어떻게 활용할 것인가 하는 문제에 있지 않다. 그보다 본질적인 것은, 빠른 속도로 변화하는 만큼 커지는 불확실성과 불균형에 대하여 교회가 어떤 대안을 모색할 수가 있느냐 하는 점이다. 본고에서 저자는 4차 산업혁명의 특징과 한국교회 현실을 살펴보고, 4차 산업혁명 시대에는 한국교회가 두 가지 방향에서 역할이 필요함을 제안하였다. 첫째는 교회의 신앙 본질에 기반을 두는 기독교 영성 회복이다. 기독교 영성 회복이 필요한 이유는 과학기술이 끊임없이 진화하며 발전을 해도 인간은 과학기술이 존재와 가치를 대신할 수 없는 창조주의 형상대로 지음 받은 피조물이자, 인간만이 하나님과 만남과 교제를 나눌 수 있는 영적 존재임을 전해야 하는 사명이 교회에 있기 때문이다. 둘째는 사회 변화에 능동적으로 대처하며 공동체성을 강화하는 것이다. 4차 산업혁명 시대에 교회는 더욱 소통하고 공감하며, 관계 형성에 탄력적이고 자율성을 발휘할 수 있는 형태의 공동체가 필요하다. 4차 산업혁명 시대에 한국교회는 기독교 영성 회복과 공동체성을 강화하는 일부터 다시 출발해야 한다. 그동안 교회가 교회 울타리 밖에서 놓치고 있던 사람과 사회와 과학기술에 대한 관심을 두고 사명과 소명의 역할을 수행해야 한다. 한국교회는 영적 공동체로서 4차 산업혁명 시대에 교회의 자기 정체성 확립과 이웃과의 관계에서 사회성을 실천함으로 영성과 사회성을 겸비하고 균형을 이루는 선교적 사명을 다하여야 할 것이다.

      • 교회의 사회적 책임을 위한 맞춤식 복지 선교에 관한 연구

        본 논문에서는 한국교회의 위기 상황을 극복하기 위한 방법으로 교회의 사회적 책임의 중요성을 다시금 강조하고, 시대에 맞는 선교전략의 필요성을 모색한다. 현대사회에서 종교가 사회적 책임을 다하는 것이 이제는 선택의 문제가 아니라 어떻게 잘 할 수 있는가 하는 문제로 인식해야 하며, 이것은 거부 할 수 없는 시대정신이며, 사명이 되어가고 있다. 따라서 한국교회의 당면 과제는 교회가 사회적 책임을 다해 영향력과 공신력을 회복하여 침체의 위기를 극복하는 것이다. 그래서 선교전략으로 대상자의 요구와 관계 형성을 중시하는 기업의 마케팅 원리를 도입한 맞춤식 복지 선교를 소개한다. 교회는 복지 선교를 실천할 수 있는 인적・물적・시설・조직적 자원이 풍부하면서도 소수의 교회를 제외하고는 복지 선교 실천이 제대로 이루어지고 있지 않다. 또한 교회의 본질을 표현하는 것 중의 하나가 복지 선교이지만 그 표현의 동기나 방법, 대상 선정에 많은 문제점들이 있기 때문에 이웃에 대한 사랑과 봉사를 수행하지 못하고 있다. 그러므로 본 논문에서는 선교학적인 관점에서 새로운 선교적 기회로 맞춤식 선교전략을 제시하고 맞춤식 선교전략을 교회의 자원 활용을 통한 복지 선교에 접목하여 교회의 본질적 의미를 회복하고 교회가 사회적 책임을 감당 할 수 있도록 하는 선교적 방법을 제시한다. This study re-emphasizes the importance of social obligation of church as a measure to overcome the crisis situation of Korean churches and seeks for the need of missionary strategies in tune with the times. Religion exercising its social responsibility in modern society should be realized no longer as a matter of choice but as a matter of how to improve its methods. This is the nonrejectable spirit of the times and has become the mission. Thus, the assignment that Korean churches have is to overcome the crisis through recovering its influence and public confidence in the society by fulfilling its social obligation. Consequently, this study proposes customized welfare ministry with business marketing principles that emphasizes customer's demands and formation of relationship as a mission strategy. Although churches have abundant human, material, facility and systematic resources that enables welfare ministry practice, there are only few churches that properly practice welfare ministry. Moreover, even though the welfare ministry is one of the ways to portray the essence of the church, love and service for the neighbors are not properly carried out due to problems in motives and methods of expression and target selection. Thus, this study proposes customized mission strategy as a new missional opportunity from theological standpoint and missional method that enables the church to recover its original intention and assume its social responsibility by integrating customized mission strategy with welfare ministry through utilizing church resources.

        아문젠해 서남극 빙붕 용융과 영향에 대한 고찰: 연구동향 및 과학적 질문

        The collapse of ice shelves is a process that can severely increase the rise of global sea-levels through the reduction of the buttressing effect of ice shelves and the consequent acceleration of the ice flow of ice sheets. In recent years, the West Antarctic ice shelves in the Amundsen Sea, whose buttressing effect is essential for a great part of the West Antarctic ice sheet, have been experiencing the most rapid melting and thinning in the world. The melting of the West Antarctic ice shelves is caused primarily by heat transported by Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW). For this reason, it is important to investigate ice-ocean interactions that could influence the melting of ice shelves and evaluate the stability of West Antarctic ice shelves. A lot of researchers have been actively investigating the West Antarctic ice shelves in the Amundsen Sea. High-impact journals have recognized the importance of and published studies on ice-ocean interactions occurring near and under the ice shelves as well as the connections among ice shelves. However, in situ observations are limited due to extreme weather and sea-ice conditions near the ice shelves; therefore, many scientific questions remain unanswered. This study introduces the characteristics of the Amundsen Sea and investigate the past and latest research issues in this region. This study also gives suggestions regarding important scientific questions and directions for future research that should help early-career scientists take the lead in future research on the melting dynamics of the West Antarctic ice shelves in the Amundsen Sea.

      • 교회의 사회적 책임을 위한 맞춤식 복지 선교에 관한 연구

        해양포유류 부착 CTD 관측 자료의 품질 관리 방법에 관한 고찰 및 사례 연구

        ‘Marine mammals-based observations’ refers to data acquisition activities from marine mammals by instrumenting CTD (Conductivity-Temperature-Depth) sensors on them for recording vertical profiles of ocean variables such as temperature and salinity during animal diving. It is a novel data collecting platform that significantly improves our abilities in observing extreme environments such as the Southern Ocean with low cost compared to the other conventional methods. Furthermore, the system continues to create valuable information until sensors are detached, expanding data coverage in both space and time. Owing to these practical advantages, the marine mammals-based observations become popular to investigate ocean circulation changes in the Southern Ocean. Although these merits may bring us more opportunities to understand ocean changes, the data should be carefully qualified before we interpret it incorporating shipboard/autonomous vehicles/moored CTD data. In particular, we need to pay more attention to salinity correction due to the usage of an unpumped-CTD sensor tagged on marine mammals. In this article, we introduce quality control methods for the marine mammals-based CTD profiles that have been developed in recent studies. In addition, we discuss strategies of quality control specifically for the seal-tagging CTD profiles, successfully having been obtained near Terra Nova Bay, Ross Sea, Antarctica since February 2021. It is the Korea Polar Research Institute’s research initiative of animal-borne instruments monitoring in the region. We anticipate that this initiative would facilitate collaborative efforts among Polar physical oceanographers and even marine mammal behavior researchers to understand better rapid changes in marine environments in the warming world.

        발육란뇨막 (發育卵尿膜) - 卵嗀片 ( allantois - on - shell )을 使用한 인풀루엔자 바이러스 감염가측정법의 (感染價測定法) 실용성검토 (實用性檢討)

        A study was made to confirm both the validity and the applicablitity of influenza virus infectivity titration by the allatois-on-shell technique, originally devised by Far.ekas de St. Groth and White in 1958. Furthermore, a series of experiments was conducted to improve the infectivity titers of influenza virus type A, PR 8 strain by this method. The results are summarized as follows. Among the embryonated eggs tested, the 13-day old eggs were best suitable for successful deembryonation and for the preparation of allantois-on-shell pieces, and at the same time provided the highest infectivity titers. 2. Shaking incubation for 72 hours at 37'C resulted in higher infectivity titers than those of 48 hours of incubation. 3. Addition of mycostatin (20 units per ml) to Star.dard Medium effectively controlled the growth of fungi during the shaking incubation without any inhibitory effect on the virus titers. 4. Allocation of (virus) adsorption time (37C, 1 hr) prior to shakirg incubation of virus-inoculated allantois-on-shell pieces appeared to improve the results of infectivity titration. 5. Ambient temperature (room temperature or cold room) at which preparation of allantois-on-shell pieces, virus inoculation and setting up of the test were conducted did effect very little the infectivity titers when the (virus) adsorption period (37C, l hr) was applied before the shaking incubation. 6. A significant drop in the virus titers was observed when the infectivity titrations were carried out with sodiun bicarbonate-added Standard Medium. 7. Infectivity titers obtained by the allantois-on-shell technique were approximately 25 times lower than those of egg infectivity titrations.
