Sleep is an essential biological process of which the underlying regulatory mechanisms involve numerous anatomical structures and biochemical substances that can be compromised by stress and the immune system. Gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA)is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter of the central nervous system (CNS). It is well established that activation of GABAA receptors promotes sleep. L. brevis BJ20 fermentation of sea tangle and oysters resulted in stress reduction and sleep inducing effects. This is the first study to report that GABA has the ability to induce sleep related hormones in mice; therefore, it has potential use as a natural sleep aid. These results suggested that sea tangle and oysters fermented by L. brevis BJ20 can be used as potential agents for stress reduction and sleep promotion

Inordinate stress causes disorders of various systems in humans and activates defense mechanisms to maintain homeostasis in the body. Sleep is a vital, highly organized process regulated by complex systems of neuronal networks and neurotransmitters. Sleep is an essential biological process whose underlying regulating involves numerous anatomical structures and biochemical substances that can be compromised by stress and by the immune system. Gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter of the central nervous system, and activation of GABAA receptors is known to favor sleep. This study was conducted to evaluate the possible application of Lactobacillus brevis BJ20 fermentation to improve the functional qualities of sea tangle Saccharina japonica and oyster Crassostrea gigas. Antioxidant activity was determined by assaying levels of radical scavenging activity against 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and superoxide. L. brevis BJ20 fermentation of sea tangle and oyster enhanced both antioxidant and antiinflammatory activities. These results suggested that L. brevis BJ20 fermented sea tangle and oyster could be used for alleviation of stress and to promote sleep.
대학생들의 성지식, 성행동 및 성교육의 실태에 관한 연구

The research is about sexual knowledge and behavior and the reality of sexual education of collegians. The target of the research was collegians from 12 universities which are from Seoul area and major cities of some provinces. The schools from Seoul area and major cities of some provinces are Collegians. The period of the research was from in early December, 2004 to in mid (the end of) January, 2005. 20~30 copies of questionnaire were distributed to each school. 300 copies were distributed in total and 275 copies were received. 210 copies were analyzed among received 275 copies. The confidence of the measure by Cronbach a is .87 in sexual knowledge and .70 in sexual behavior. Therefore, that analysis is reliable. The gathered data were analyzed by SPSS program and, t-test, one-way ANOVA and x<sup>2</sup>-test were done. The result of the research shows sexual education should be emphasized more and how sexual education should be improved.

Loeys-Dietz Syndrome (LDS) is a recently described autosomal dominant aortic aneurysm syndrome with widespread systemic involvement. It is characterized by the triad of 1) arterial tortuosity and aneurysms, 2) hypertelorism, and 3) bifid uvula or cleft palate. A 12-year-old boy with LDS was scheduled to undergo correction of aortic valve regurgitation due to aortic annuloectasia. We report our clinical experiences of a case of LDS patient with brief review of related literatures and relevant anesthetic problems. (Korean J Anesthesiol 2009;57:371∼5)
임상연구 : Desflurane 흡입 마취가 Sevoflurane과 달리 수술 후 장관 기능의 회복을 지연시키는가?

Background: Sympathetic nervous hyperactivity presents in response to surgical stress has been implicated as an important component of postoperative ileus. Because desflurane induces sympathetic activation, the effects of desflurane and sevoflurane on the recovery of bowel function were compared. Methods: Forty patients undergoing a laparoscopic appendectomy were randomly assigned to receive either sevoflurane (Group S, n = 20) or desflurane (Group D, n = 20). The anesthetic, operative, and postoperative pain managements were standardized. The CRP (C-reactive protein), total leukocyte count, and ratio of the neutrophil to leukocyte counts were measured preoperatively and 12 hours postoperatively. The mean arterial blood pressure (MABP), heart rate, and end-tidal anesthetic concentration were measured at 10-min intervals during the surgery. The degree of postoperative pain, 11-graded surgical difficulty score, time to the first passage of flatus and first oral intake of clear fluid, as well as the postoperative hospital stay were also evaluated. Results: Finally, 16 and 17 subjects in Groups S and D were included the analyses. There were no significant differences in the MABP, heart rate, and end-tidal anesthetic concentration between the two groups. The clinical and laboratory parameters related to the severities of inflammation and surgical trauma were similar in both groups. There were no significant differences in the times to the first passage of flatus and first oral intake of clear fluid and the postoperative hospital stay between the two groups. Conclusions: Although desflurane induces sympathetic activation, unlike sevoflurane, it does not delay the return of bowel function following a laparoscopic appendectomy. We present a case of an anesthetic gas leak through the valve of the Selectatec back bar during a surgical procedure. The Selectatec Vaporizing System is a quick-change system consisting of anesthetic vaporizers of the ``Tec models`` of the Ohmeda machine that are seated on a compatibility manifold block located on the back bar of the anesthetic machine. In order to prevent a leak and a failure of vapor delivery, the "Tec models series" can only be turned ``on`` when the locking lever is turned to the ``lock`` position. However in this case, the control knob was rotated despite the back bar locking mechanism not being engaged, and a gas leak developed through the unlocked valves in Selectatec back bar. The Penlon Sigma Delta Anesthetic Vaporizer (sevoflurane) in a Datex-Ohmeda Aestiva/5 anesthesia machine can be turned ``on`` when the locking lever is maintained at the ``unlock`` position.
