Hyun-jee Kang and Myungki Oh. 2018. A Study on Joke Misinterpretation in L2 Settings: Viewed from The Benign-Violation Theory. Studies in Modern Grammar 99, 161-176. This paper examines cases in which Korean college students might misinterpret superiority, incongruity, and sarcastic English jokes. In parallel the writer tries to bring to light possible background reasons for their misinterpretation from the perspective of the Benign-Violation Theory’ concepts of norm violation, commitment, and psychological distance. Arguably Korean college students are likely to misinterpret English humor codes influenced by their ingrained belief system of strict moral standard as well as insufficient exposure to particular genres of English jokes.

This paper is an attempt to show that metalinguistic negation connected with denying the appropriateness of a means of expression does not operate upon the semantic content of the sentence, but upon the manner in which the sentence is expressed. We will prove, through the examination of the well-known thirteen utterances, that this negation can indeed operate on any aspect of the utterances and on a conversational implicature as well. In order to understand the notion of metalinguistic negation, we’ll discuss the two distinctions that can be made regarding the use of negation, namely descriptive vs. metalinguistic negation and initiative vs. reactive negation, in the sense of Horn (1985, 1989) and Foolen (1991), respectively. On the basis of the two distinctions regarding the two uses of ‘not’, we will argue that the material falling within the scope of the metalinguistic negation is ‘mentioned’ rather than ‘used’. And we’ll also argue that the metalinguistic negation under the relationship between the scalar operators such as ‘three’/‘four’ and ‘some’/‘all’ is acting on a conversational implicature associated with the pragmatic aspects.
New Englishes와 AAVE에 나타나는 영형계사의 생성에 관한 연구

The distribution of zero form copula or copula omission in New Englishes, AAVE and some English creoles induces two hypotheses. One is imperfect learning hypothesis based on second language learners simplification and generalization. The other is the possibility that the pattern reflects a shared substrate influence from local/first languages or other historical contact factors. Our study aims to suggest a more basic principle behind these factors, arguing that from the perspective of the syntactic constructions that express the linking between the subject and the predicate, the most economic way of the expression is the phonologically null form. We suggest that the advent of the zero form copula in New Englishes and AAVE is best explained by imperfect second language learning hypothesis. We also argue that the hypothesis can be comprised in the broad sense of economy principle in view of general language evolution.

The aim of this paper is to suggest an alternative semantic analysis for the reduplications in English. The semantic functions of the reduplications have been analyzed in Horn scale and prototype analyses. Revising the proposal of Lee and Song (2011), we suggest that the prototypical concepts of the reduplications can be analyzed in the dichotomy of prototype/non-proto type. We argue that the meaning of some reduplicative adjectives can be identified by way of the notion of contextual prototype or dynamic prototype, rather than the notion of static prototype.

This article is about habitual sentences subsumed under generic sentences. The main purpose of this paper is to suggest some pragmatic principles of resolving the semantic ambiguity (kind-habitual reading vs. existential-habitual reading) involved in the interpretation of habitual sentences. I assume that generics or habituality includes a sentential operator which can be expressed as the semantic constraints about habitual sentences. I argue that an adequate interpretation of habitual sentences is not entirely determined by such semantic constraints. I go on to show how the kind-habitual vs. existential-habitual reading ambiguity with respect to habituality can be successfully accounted for within the pragmatic division into ‘given’ and ‘new’ information related to the interpretation of indefinite NPs.

Languages have various ways of linking between the subject and the predicate. In many languages, the copular verb is the principal way of linking, though this is not the universally the case. Some appear in the form of suffixes and others in the form of words. One of the purposes of the study is to show the various ways of linking among languages with some examples. Another purpose is to show that there are many instances of zero (phonologically null) copula constructions cross-linguistically. The last purpose is to provide syntactic, semantic and pragmatic explanation for the zero copula constructions. We will argue that the dichotomy of stage-level and individual level predicates plays the core role for the zero copula constructions.
맥락 진행에 따른 전치사 over와 beyond의 개별 의미와 의미구조 확장

his paper aims to analyze how the polysemous words over and beyond extend their some semantic structure on the basis of the contextual process. First, we have reviewed Tyler & Evans’s studies (2001 & 2003), which account for the polysemy of over in a principled, systematic manner within the framework of cognitive linguistics. They claim that the distinct senses of over are independent of the context, but we seek to indicate some problems with their analysis. I n order to solve Tyler & Evans’s flaw, we have focused on the relevance of the distinct senses (Tyler & Evans’s terminology) of prepositions to the sentence inference or contextual process. Through an analysis of the text, Confucius The Analects , we have figured out the relationship between distinct sense of preposition and its context. We have tried to show the control and transfer sense of over, depending on the lexical feature mapping in sentences with the sense settled by the contextual inference. We also have proposed core meaning of beyond and its transcendence and excess meaning formed through the relationships of both the feature mapping of lexicon and the context.
