Vol.11 No.1

This paper attempts to prove the possibility that Women in Love can be approached by ecological thought. It is necessary to research the family of Lawrence's childhood, the environmental surroundings and Lawrence's viewpoint of nature to prove the possibility. The most urgent problem for us in the modern world is the ecological crisis due to the destructive aspect of modern civilization. This Lawrence's attitude toward the modern civilization is clearly reflected in Women in Love. Lawrence diagnoses the destructive aspects of modern civilization and the human relationship through Gerald, Gudrun, Hermione and Loerke who represent the industrial society and suggests the apocalyptic vision to the human being from the nature. Lawrence thinks that we must restore the animated power of life to revive the modern man who lost the vital power of life. Birkin and Ursula represent this thought of Lawrence and they accomplish the idealistic human relationship based upon the true love and the real life. They do not have the posture of the binomial contrast that separates the human being from the nature, This posture of the binominal brings to one of the causes of the present ecological crisis. As a result, we can say that Women in Love is the novel that belongs to the category of literary ecology. And we can regard that Lawrence previously presented the paradigm that ecologist advocates.

Vol.31 No.4

This paper attempts to prove the possibility that Lady Chatterley's Lover can be approached by ecological thought. In Lady Chatterley's Lover, Lawrence rejects the binomial contrast which becomes the tradition of western thought by his dualism. After Descartes, the Western men degrade their body and enhance the spirit and the intelligence. This inner split of human being is different from Lawrence's dualism and the oriental thought in which the spirit and the body, the human being and the nature is thought as organic and wholesome. The binomial contrast between spirit and body is deeply related with that of human being and nature. The degradation of human being's body in the Western Europe is led to the degradation of nature. Lawrence asserts that the revival of life-force of human being is the solution to relieve the human being in the modern world. As a result, we can say that Lady Chatterley's Lover is the work that belongs to the category of literary ecology. And we can regard that Lawrence presented the paradigm previously that ecologist advocates. (Wonkwang University)

Vol.22 No.1

This thesis aims to analyze the true nature of Lawrence’s woman characters of his early novels and to present the misunderstanding and misreading of Lawrence and the woman chatacters of his early novels by feminists who consider Lawrence as a male chauvinist. The feminists who condider Lawrence as a male chauvinist like Millett misunderstand the major woman characters of Lawrence’s early novels. As Lettie of The White Peacook, Helena of Trespasser and Gerutrude Morel and Miriam of Sons and Lovers are spiritual, they belong to the dreaming women. Though Lawrence dislikes these dreaming women, the reason he dislikes these dreaming women is not that he is a male chauvinist, but he believes that they encroach the vitality of human being. As Lawrence think reason and passion must be harmonized and balanced, he fears that the life of human being will be partial toward the side of spirit and anti-vitality by the spirirual women. This literalistic idea of Lawrence is related to the dualism. The dualism of Lawrence cosists of the male principle and the female principle. If a man is vital, he belongs to the female principle. If a woman is spiritual, she belongs to the male principle. When we devide the woman characters of Lawrence’s early novels by dualism, Lettie, Helena, Gertrude Morel and Miriam belongs to the male principle, Clara belongs to the female principle. According to Lawrence’s dualism, the reason the dreaming women of Lawrence’s early novels are denounced by Lawrence is not that they are women, but they are so spiritual that they are apt to be an ti-vitality. So the fact that the feminists who consider Lawrence as a male chauvinist assert that Lawrence intentionally underestimate the woman characters and subordinate them to the man characters as Lawrence is a male chauvinist is very shortsighted.

Vol.26 No.1

“This thesis aims to analyze Lawrence's view of woman and his anti-feminism in Aaron's Rod, Kangaroo, The Plumed Serpent. Lawrence’s view of woman is very important for him. Lawrence is called as an anti-feministic writer or a feministic writer according to his view toward woman. When we devide Lawrence’s literary history as four periods, he is a feministic writer except the third period. Lawrence became anti-feminist in the third period. In Aaron Rod, Aaron’s attitude to his wife is thoroughly patriarchal. Aaron’s disappearance from home proves that he is selfish and irresponsible. Aaron's giving up family is the step for the woman conquest. Aaron’s attitude to the woman conquest is exposed in the women whom Aaron met after his leaving from his wife. Aaron and Lilly indulge in long misogynistic diatribes. Lilly who asserts that his wife must submit to him is the same as Aaron. Lilly and Aaron think that the right of man is declining after war. So they feel a sense of duty to revive the right of man. The comradely union of Aaron and Lilly is developed into the leadership theory that all women and the inferior men must submit to the leader who has the great spirit. Lawrence finds that Frieda is the lady who is difficult to control as she is so obstinate and a lady of strong personality. As Frieda refused to give up her right, Lawrence and Frieda were in conflict each other. This conflict is exposed as the form of woman's submission to man and the man’s domination to woman in Kangaroo. In The Plumed Serpent, Kate who married to Cipriano gives up her self and submitts to the phallic power of Cipriano. At the end of The Plumed Serpent, Kate appeals Cipriano to let her stay at him. The result is the culmination of anti-feminism. Kate gives up her self completely and submitts to the strong phallic power of man. Lawrence's man superiority is exposed through this process. In The Plumed Serpent, when the man is active and dominative and the woman is submissive and dependent, the balance between man and woman is achieved. Lawrence strongly expresses his anti-feministic point of view that the man must display the strong leadership to revive the power and the right of man that is lost owing to the war and the woman must give up the self and the independence and submitts to the strong man leader. Lawrence became anti-feminist after the first world war. The reason why he became anti-feminist from feminist is as follows: the first is that Lawrence has the antipathy against the movement of woman’s right that emphasize excessively the emancipation of woman, the second is the ever-increasing participation of woman into society after the first world war, the third is the fear of woman who is independent and has the strong personality owing to the discord with Frieda. < Wonkwang University >

Centering on the Idealistic Human Relationship and the Apocalyptic Vision

Vol.31 No.1

This paper aims to find the idealistic human relationship andthe apocalyptic vision in the Rainbow. D.H.Lawrence uses his art to describe truth that the artist has to say. But to describe truth is not easy. Lawrence thinks that art would be the source of truth if the human being had the courage to express the truthful feeling. So Lawrence wanted the new form to describe his own feeling. Lawrence who thinks his art as "art for my sake" can exchange his strong inner emotionand emotional experience into literary art. This attitude of Lawrence toward the literature is clearly reflected in The Rainbow. The writer's vision is developed by polarity in Lawrence's novels. The characters of his novels continue the contrasting relationship between them. Their relationship uusually have the condition of approach and avoidance, harmony and disharmony. This relationship becomes the foundation of dualism resulting from the pursuit of polarity and consists of the basis of the literary thought that Lawrence creates. Considering this contedt, the most important vision described in Lawrence's novels is the pursuit of polarity. This pursuit of polarity is accomplished by Lawrence's effort in pursuing the idealistic human relationship. The rhythm of human relationship becomes the foundationof polarity. In short, the condition that the characters of Lawrence's novels atain the balanced relationship between them through the harmony and disharmony is the core of polarity which Lawrence seeks in his novels. In the Rainbow, the process that the conflict of each glneration's hero and heroine through three generations is harmonized and developed into the idealistic relationship is reflected and the moeern industrial society which prevent the accomphishment of the idealized human relationship is presecuted. The process that the idealistic human relationship is distorted by themodern civilization is ahaped apocalyptically.
