The analysis of side door strength of SUV(Sports Utility Vehicle) was performed. Door impact bar of side door plays an important role in protecting intrusion from side impact accident. In general, stiff impact bar shows good performance to side door intrusion test, but when it is stiff too much, it may cause local stress concentration on the bracket connecting the impact bar and the inner door panel. It is important to optimize impact bar size and bracket thickness and shape so as not to cause failure. In this study, we could get the appropriate design variables of the impact bar and the related parts through the CAE analysis and test. The result of this study will be useful to save the desinging time of door.<br/>

In these days, MPV or SUV are getting more popular in the automotive market and exhibited more frequently in various motor show. These kinds of vehicles, however, are not so popular and the technologies are comparatively underdeveloped in Korea. Most of these vehicles are 4 wheel driven and have frames. The crash characteristics of the frames have dominant influences on those of whole vehicle because the front part of frames absorb most of impact energy. The purpose of this study is to examine the crash characteristics of the vehicle with frames using FEM and estabilish the methods improving them. Test and analysis results of 30 mph frontal and oblique impact of a vehicle were compared.<br/>

In this study, structural optimization of chassis frame is performed to reduce the weight and increase static stiffness and improve modal characteristics. In order to select the design variables to be modified, design sensitivity analysis is adopted. Dominant parameters to the static and modal response were found. Modifying these dominant parameters, wo could meet the design target efficiently.<br/>
