In the late 1890s, the Korean people started to become aware of the importance of the Korean language. The awareness of the Korean representation formed the need for the national communication system to make Korea civilized. To have the unique writing system for the nation is the most important factor for an independent country and civilization. Early modern novels were written in Korean. Due to the national crisis, the standardization and distribution of standard Korean was considered to be a very important issue of national importance. Early modern novels kept Hangul (Korean alphabets) as a national writing system even though Japanese was used as the official language. Early modern novels were closely related to resurgence and reconsideration of Hangul. Hangul was used to represent words and sentences in early modern novels. In addition, Hangul had deep psychological meaning. Through Hangul, early modern novels created a modern medium. Shin Chae-ho, Lee Hae-jo, Lee Gwang-su, Kim Dong-in, Yeom Sang-seop, and Lee Tae-jun were early modern writers who contributed to the standardization and national resurgence of Hangul. The Korean people as an ethnic group can lay claim of the creative modernization of language through novels. Generally the early modernization of a country is attributable to one ethnic group. The Korean people wanted to confirm that they were part of one community. The language not only formed the cultural identity but also formed the absolute origin for a nation. Hangul is a historical heritage which early Korean people depended on for national survival. The use of Hangul and early modern novels made vital creative changes in the form of an early modern representation system. There is a complementary relationship between early modern novels and Hangul.

글쓰기 교육은 이미 대학 교양의 중심 영역으로 자리잡아 왔다. 글쓰기 능력은 학생들이 전공 학습을 원활히 수행하기 위해서도 필요하지만 졸업 이후 갖추어야 할 필수 기능으로 더욱 부각되고 있다. 이러한 현실적인 필요성에 의하여 대부분 대학에서는 글쓰기 교육을 강화하면서 효과적인 교육 방안이나 제도적인 보완책을 마련하고 있다. 글쓰기 교육도 기본적으로는 다른 교과목과 마찬가지로 학습목표 설정, 학습 내용의 구완, 그리고 학습평가로 이루어진다. 여기에 글쓰기 교육의 특성상 요구되는 글쓰기 교실이나 센터와 같은 제도적 기구의 보조적이고 협력 관계가 요구된다. 여기서 가장 먼저 점검해 볼 문제가 교육목표이다. 그것은 이후에 전개되는 글쓰기 교육의 기본 지침이 될 뿐만 아니라 세부적인 교육 행위의 방향을 지시하기 때문이다. 본고는 충남대학교의 글쓰기 교육을 사례로 분석하면서 기초 글쓰기의 학습목표를 설계해 보고자 한다. 글쓰기 교육은 대개 기초적인 수준의 공통적 과정과 계열별로 심화된 과정으로 분리되고 있다. 기초 글쓰기는 학부생들에게 의무적으로 부과되는 공통적인 글쓰기 교과과정으로, 전공과 무관하게 수강할 수 있도록 수업의 내용과 수준이 주어진다. 그런 까닭에 수업목표 또한 이에 맞추어 설정되어야 한다. 여기에 간과해서는 안 될 점은 전통적인 작문교육과는 다르게 그것이 모색되어야 한다는 것이다. 전통적인 작문교육에서는 창의적 사고력을 글쓰기의 전제 조건으로 제시하곤 했다. 또한 문장 단위의 수사학에 그것의 핵심을 두곤 했다. 문학적 글쓰기를 수행하는, 전문화의 함정을 곁들이기도 했다. 기초 글쓰기는 이러한 전통적 글쓰기 교육과는 다른 층위에서 출발한다. 그것은 글쓰기가 영감이나 재능에 의해서가 아니라 준비와 전략에 의해 수행됨을 일깨우고 한다. 그리하여 글쓰기의 작업 프로세스와 그에 대한 인지적 과정을 중점적으로 가르치고, 실습을 통하여 이를 익혀가고자 한다. 기초 글쓰기의 학습목표는 이 두 측면에 맞추어 기획되어야 한다. Writing education is one of core subjects among liberal arts courses. Writing ablity is required for students to accomplish their majors as well. For some practical reasons, most universities have intensified their writing education. Effective teaching method and institutional supplement have been established. Writing education is comprised of purpose setting, lecture contents and grading. Writing classes and centers assist writing education effectively. The purpose needs to be examined thoroughly because it is not only the basic guideline of writing education but also the direction of lecturing method. This essay tries to plan education purpose of fundamental writing by analyzing writing education of Chungnam National University. Writing education is classified into fundamental course and specialized course. Fundamental course is a prerequisite for all students. Its contents and level are formed for students regardless of majors to accomplish it. The purpose should be set reflecting this circumstances. It differs from traditional writing education. Traditional writing education emphasizes creative thinking and rhetoric. It contains literary writing as well. Fundamental writing is based on different level with traditional writing. It premises that writing is conducted by preparation and strategy, not inspiration and talent. It emphasizes the process of writing. It also requires cognitive process considering conversational community. Education purpose of fundamental writing should be set considering these two aspects.
