        Phloroglucinol Attenuates Free Radical-induced Oxidative Stress

        The protective role of phloroglucinol against oxidative stress and stress-induced premature senescence (SIPS) was investigated in vitro and in cell culture. Phloroglucinol had strong and concentration-dependent radical scavenging effects against nitric oxide (NO), superoxide anions (O2−), and hydroxyl radicals. In this study, free radical generators were used to induce oxidative stress in LLC-PK1 renal epithelial cells. Treatment with phloroglucinol attenuated the oxidative stress induced by peroxyl radicals, NO, O2−, and peroxynitrite. Phloroglucinol also increased cell viability and decreased lipid peroxidation in a concentration-dependent manner. WI-38 human diploid fibroblast cells were used to investigate the protective effect of phloroglucinol against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced SIPS. Phloroglucinol treatment attenuated H2O2-induced SIPS by increasing cell viability and inhibited lipid peroxidation, suggesting that treatment with phloroglucinol should delay the aging process. The present study supports the promising role of phloroglucinol as an antioxidative agent against free radical-induced oxidative stress and SIPS.

        해조류 추출물 및 활성성분의 라디칼 소거능

        The radical scavenging activity of methanol extracts of seaweeds and their active compounds, alginic acid, fucoidan and phloroglucinol, were investigated under in vitro. Among methanol extracts of seaweeds (sea mustard, sea tangle, seaweed papulosa, fusiforme, sea lettuce, purple laver and chlorella), seaweed papulosa and sea tangle showed strong scavenging activities of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and hydroxyl radical (${\cdot}OH$). In addition, under in vitro, the scavenging activities on DPPH radical of alginic acid and fucoidan, which are active compounds of brown algae, and phloroglucinol, the active compound from Ecklonia species, were evaluated and compared. Fucoidan and phloroglucinol showed strong DPPH scavenging effect, in particular, phloroglucinol had strongest activity among the active compounds. On the other hand, alginic acid did not exert DPPH scavenging activity. From the present study, we could confirm the antioxidative activity of seaweeds and its active compounds.

        중등학교 상담자의 소진 경험에 대한 질적 연구

        본 연구는 중등학교 위(Wee)클래스에서 3년 이상 근무하면서 소진과 회복을 경험한 학교 상담자 3명을 대상으로 심층 면접을 실시하여 수집된 자료를 내용 분석 절차에 따라 4개 영역, 10개 범주, 27개의 하위범주를 도출하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 연구 참여자들은 무력감, 위축, 자기혐오, 우울, 짜증, 혼란스러움, 과도한 긴장감 등의 부정적 정서와 자책감, 자신감 하락, 불안과 부담으로 상담을 피하고 싶음 등의 다양한 경험을 보고하였다. 둘째, 전문성의 한계, 자살 사고에 대한 심리적 부담, 예기치 못한 사건 및 상황, 업무과다, 구조적 문제, 동료 교원들과의 이질감 및 관계갈등 등이 연구 참여자들의 소진에 영향을 미친 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 연구 참여자들은 사람을 좋아한다는 것과 계속해서 발전해 나가려는 성장 욕구, 빠른 라포 형성을 촉진하는 친화력 등 상담자로서의 강점과 성취 경험이 소진 회복에 도움이 되었다고 하였다. 넷째, 연구 참여자들은 삶에 대한 가치와 태도가 바뀌며 소명 의식이 고취되었고 상담 역량 강화와 스스로 업무량을 조절할 수 있게 된 변화가 나타났다. 본 연구는 중등학교 상담자의 발달과정에서 소진과 회복의 경험이 갖는 의미를 이해하는 계기를 마련하였으며, 소진 예방과 대처 방안을 개인적․조직적․사회적인 차원에서 제시하였다는 점에서 의의가 있다. This study conducted in-depth interviews with three school counselors to explore burnout and recovery experiences of school counselors who have been working for more than three years at Wee class in secondary schools. A content analysis procedure derived 4 areas, 10 categories, and 27 subcategories. The results are as follows. First, the study participants reported various experiences such as feelings of helplessness, atrophy, self-loathing, depression, irritation, confusion, and wanting to avoid conducting counseling sessions with students. Second, lack of expertise in counseling, psychological burdens on suicide accidents, unexpected situations, excessive work loads, structural problems, heterogeneity with fellow teachers, and relationship conflicts affected the burnout of study participants. Third, the study participants said that their strengths and achievement experiences as counselors, such as their love of working with people, desire for constant growth and development, and affinity to build strong rapport, helped them recover their burnout. Fourth, the study participants experienced a stronger sense of calling with changes in their values and attitudes toward life. They also reported increased counseling competencies and abilities to adjust their own workload. This study provides an opportunity to understand the meanings of burnout and recovery experiences in the career development of secondary school counselors and presents implications for school counselors’ burnout prevention and intervention at individual, organizational, and societal levels.
