Vol.24 No.2

This research was performed to find out the influences of Lactobacillus reuteri KCTC 3594 intake on skin conditions of middle-aged women(40±5 years old) for 12 weeks(from June 12 to September 2). Thirty female volunteers were randomly divided into the three groups of 10 people; control group(hereinafter referred to as Cont), L. reuteri probiotics group(Pro) and L. reuteri paraprobiotics group(Para). Each subject has been directed to intake one capsule of L. reuteri(1×1010 CFU / capsule), a day for the 12 week-period. After the 12-week treatment, Cont group showed a decrease in moisture content(p<.05) but it increased both in Pro group(p<.001) and Para group(p<.001). The sebum content showed a tendency to increase in Cont group and increased both for Pro group(p<.01) and Para group(p<.001). The level of skin roughness increased in Cont group(p<.05) but decreased in two other groups; Pro group(p<.001), and Para group(p<.01). The amount of skin wrinkle has increased in Cont group(p<.05) but decreased in two other groups; Pro group(p<.001), and Para group(p<.05). Comprehensively, the experiment indicates that the intake of probiotics and paraprobiotics is effective in improving skin health and Pro group showed better result than Para group. Therefore, the result implies that intake of L. reuteri induced intestinal immune balance and consequently intrinsic skin change and L. reuteri probiotics and paraprobiotics are expected to be used as a beauty cosmetic food.

Lactobacillus reuteri 섭취가 여성의 안면 피부상태에 미치는 영향

        석지한 ( Ji-han Suk ),박정아 ( Jeong-a Park ),강상모 ( Sang-mo Kang ) 한국미용학회 2018 한국미용학회지 Vol.24 No.4

Probiotics has drawn a great attention as an inner-beauty material, and its diverse effects through intestinal immunity balance have been reported. The study aims to examine the effects of Lactobacillus reuteri KCTC 3594 intake on skin health of 30-40 middle-aged women in a 12-week treatment. Thirty female volunteers were randomly divided into the three groups of 10 people; control group(hereinafter referred to as Cont), L. reuteri probiotics group(Pro) and L. reuteri paraprobiotics group(Para). L. reuteri was administered to each group (1×1010 CFU/capsule) on an empty stomach in the morning once a day for 12 weeks. After 12-week intake of L. reuteri, the amount of melanin was increased in all groups with statistical significance(p<.001) while no change was found in all groups in terms of facial erythema. Regarding TEWL, no significant change was observed in a Cont group while a statistically significant decrease was detected in Pro and Para groups(p<.001, p<.05). In terms of skin depression, no significant change occurred in a Cont group while a statistically significant decline was found in both Pro and Para groups(p<.01, p<.05). In overall, Pro and Para groups were effective in improving TEWL and skin depression. In terms of significant difference, a Pro group was greater than a Para group. This study confirmed that L. reuteri probiotics and paraprobiotics would be useful as an inner-beauty material which can strengthen skin health.

Vol.14 No.2

In Korean hair, blue-dyeing causes severe hair damage due to a pre-bleaching step. Due to such damage, color retention period of the hair becomes very short. The prsent study aimed to address this problem, and to this end, samples were prepared as follows: blue-dyed hair (control group), dyed hair after pre-treatment with earthworms autolysate on bleached hair (pre-group), dyed hair with a mixture of dye and earthworms autolysate (mixed group). After blue-dyeing bleached hair once and 3 times, L*a*b* values measured to examine the color retention after shampoo application, at frequency once, 10 times, 20 times. For blue-dyeing, the hair was dyed well, where a* was close to ‘0’ in proportion to b* as brightness (L*) and yellow (b*) were relatively low. L*a*b* values were found to be highest in a pre-group when bleached hair (once, 3 times) was blue-dyed and shampooed up to 20 times while the color retention was the best in the pre- and mixed-groups. In regard to the dependence of color retention on shampoo frequency, the pre-group was more than 3 times greater than the control group and mixed-group. In terms of ‘dyeing uniformity’, ‘vividness’, ‘glossiness’ and ‘smoothness’, the pre-treated group was the best for both one-time and 3-times bleached hair. With respect to ‘texture roughness’, the control group was the highest. Regarding ‘hair dye deodorization effects’, the mixed group was the greatest. Just like the spectrophotometer measurement, the pre-treated group was the best at an expert group questionnaire. Since the earthworms autolysate treatment was found to enhance hair coloration and color durability during blue hair dyeing, it is reasonable to say that such treatment is commercially valuable.

Vol.14 No.3

Lactic acid bacteria are often taken in the form of yogurt-which is becoming a highly stable food type often consumed daily-or medicine. Lactic acid bacteria have a significant industrial value because of the various reports of health improvement effects that they may convey (eg, anti-microbial, improved immunity). This study examined changes in facial skin when middle-aged women (ie, 40~50s) took probiotic and para-probiotic medicines derived from Lactobacillus rhamnosus KCTC 5033. The research subjects were 30 middle-age women who were randomly assigned (10 per group) to consume either: i) probiotics of L. rhamnosus KCTC 5033, ii) bacteria-killing paraprobiotics, or, iii) a control. Each group consumed 1 capsule (1×1010 CFU or more) of assigned treatment on an empty stomach every morning for 12 weeks, and changes in their facial and neck skin before and after consumption were observed. Their skin change, melanin index, erythema index, moisture content, TEWL, skin roughness, and skin surface temperature were measured to identify any potential differences. A survey was also used to investigate respondent’s satisfaction with their skin before and after lactic acid bacteria intake on a 5-point Likert scale. Before and after results demonstrated that melanin index significantly increased in only the control group while moisture content increased significantly in the probiotics and paraprobiotics groups. Also in the probiotics and parabiotics groups, moisture content increased, while skin roughness decreased. Also in the probiotics and parabiotics groups: i) moisture content increased, ii) skin roughness decreased, and iii) no changes (before to after) in erythema index, TEWL or skin surface temperature were observed. The results of probiotics and paraprobiotics on neck skin indicated that the control group experienced a significant increase in melanin index, skin roughness, and TEWL; moisture content increased significantly in the probiotics and paraprobiotics groups, and skin surface temperature increased significantly in only the probiotics group.
