DC power distribution is attracting attention due to the increase in renewable energy and DC load. Due to the characteristics of the DC distribution system configuration such as DC/DC converters, the new protection system are essential for stable operation of the low voltage DC (LVDC) distribution system. This paper proposes a new protection method in the LVDC distribution system with photovoltaic (PV) system connected by tie switch. In the system configuration of the proposed method, circuit breaker(CB)s are installed at both ends of the line. The proposed protection system includes both the fault detection and the recovery procedure. The proposed method is modeled using EMTP/ATPDraw, and the various simulations are performed according to the fault location and fault clearing time.

Loop distribution system is increasing by reasons such as requirements for reliability of power supply and increased renewable energy. In the loop distribution system, protection issues such as maloperation of protection relay may arise. This paper proposes the protection scheme based on Internet of Things (IoT) in loop distribution system. The proposed protection scheme uses currents from both distribution lines in the loop distribution system. The difference between both currents in the normal state and the difference between both currents in the fault state are calculated. By comparing these values, the faulted line is determined and the tie switch is controlled. To verify the proposed scheme, the simulations according to fault location and fault resistance are performed using Electromagnetic Transients Program (EMTP). The simulation results show that the faulted line can be accurately judged by proposed scheme and the outage section can be reduced by tie switch control.

Use of photovoltaic (PV) power generation system will become more widespread in the future due to anticipated cost reduction in PV technology. As the capacity of PV systems increases, a variation of power system frequency may prevent the stable output of PV system. However, the standard for the frequency protection of distributed generation in Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO)’s rule does not include the setting of frequency protection. Therefore, this paper analyzes the correlation between the frequency protection requirements and the stability of grid-connected PV system for the adjustable operating setting of frequency protection. The distribution system interconnected with 3 MW PV system is modeled by Matlab/Simulink. The various values of frequency are simulated. For studied cases, the stability of PV system is analyzed. It is concluded that the setting of frequency protection is necessary to consider the stability of PV system.

The one step type and two step type pole are used in distribution line. If the three phases are not balanced, the communication line can be damaged by induced voltage. This paper calculates the neutral current using KEPCO's distribution system model which is only composed by one step type pole. The used system model is modelled by using ATPDraw and the neutral current is calculated by using EMTP/MODELS. Many cases for abstracting the neutral current characteristics in KEPCO's distribution system are simulated and analyzed.
