        EFL College Students" Perceptions toward the Use of Electronic Dictionaries

        The purpose of this study is two-fold: first, to examine the current status of e-dictionary use in Korea and the attitude toward its use by Korean college students; second, to investigate to what degree e-dictionaries may be useful and effective tools in helping to improve learners" overall English skills. The subjects were 84 college students and they were divided into two groups: the experiment group and the control group. The instrument employed was the Preliminary Student Usage Questionnaire, which was developed by the researcher, together with the questionnaire survey developed by Koyama and Takeuchi (2004), which was modified for the study. The findings from this research are as follows: First, a special instruction session on how to use e-dictionaries made a statistically significant difference among users of the dictionaries. Those subjects who had received the instruction displayed a more positive attitude toward the use of e-dictionaries. Second, the experiment group showed a more favorable attitude toward the use of e-dictionaries. On the basis of the above results, the researcher suggests that proper guidance on the use of e-dictionaries and their benefits should have a positive influence on users. The findings from the current research will shed light on the current status of electronic dictionary use among Korean college students.

        외국어 교육용 모바일 어플리케이션 사용에 대한 인식과 과제

        Recently the use of language learning apps has gained popularity among foreign language learners. For this study, 10 graduate students who chose to use various language learning apps using their mobile over a period of ten weeks. The study aims to investigate learners’ attitudes toward foreign language learning apps and examine whether there is any difference in their attitudes depending on various factors. For the data collection, the questionnaire survey was administered to the participants; and they were also asked to submit their progress reports. Then, their reports were analyzed using the NVivo 12. Overall, the results showed that the students found the application helpful, especially in assisting them with their listening, speaking, and vocabulary. The functional benefits of the application were improved through meaningful repetition, ubiquity, and variety of learning materials. As for the challenges, there were fewer opportunities to speak, lack of grammar learning and the limitations of free versions. Due to the small sample size and short length of the participants’ use of the apps, the results may be preliminary in drawing any substantial conclusive findings, but they will still give us some insights as to what we can do to help these language learners in the future.         2007 개정 교육과정 중학교 영어 교과서 신출 어휘 빈도 분석

        The primary purpose of this study was to examine prominent features of frequency in the new vocabulary of the middle school English textbooks based on the 2007 revised national curriculum and thereby to provide meaningful data to be compared with those on the 2009 revised national curriculum. This study used an online software (Vocabprofile) to divide words into four categories by frequency: K1 (1-1,000), K2 (1,001-2,000), AWL (Academic Words List), and Off-List Words (the remainder). Salient features discovered from the frequency-based categorization of words in textbooks by grades or publishers were further examined for pedagogical implications regarding textbook writing and curriculum revisions in the future. The analysis has revealed the following results. K1 words accounted for the most among the words presented in English textbooks, reflecting the significance of the high-frequency words in L2 learning. The number of other words showed a steady increase as the grade gets higher. Finally, most textbooks presented multi-words as new vocabulary, which indicates the importance of idioms or collocations. The vocabulary analysis by frequency could be of use to textbook evaluation, considering the growing importance of frequency-based vocabulary teaching.

        영어 교재에 사용된 시각 자료 비교 연구

        The purpose of this study is to examine visual elements in Korean high school English textbooks and compare the results with Hill's (2003) which attempted to analyze visuals in British EFL coursebooks. In this study, all 15 English textbooks of high school year 1 in Korea were selected and analyzed. On the basis of the analysis and comparison, the following results have been obtained. First, there were some similarities and differences between the two kinds of texts-Korean high school textbooks and British EFL coursebooks. One similarity was found in regard to the average of pictures and drawings. Second, it was found that in both cases, more pictures were used than the drawings. Third, with regard to the identity of the pictures and drawings used in both texts, there was a higher degree of the use of people than that of objects. Finally, it was found that the pictures and drawings were used more for decorative purpose rather than for the purpose of actual use in teaching and learning. The findings of the current study will shed light on visual impact in EFL coursebooks and explore ways to provide learners and teachers with meaningful learning and teaching experiences.

        영화를 활용한 명시적・암시적 어휘학습이 학습자의 어휘지식에 미치는 영향

        The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of explicit and implicit vocabulary learning through movies on learners vocabulary knowledge. One hundred seventeen university students participated in this study from different departments and years. They were divided into three groups: explicit and implicit vocabulary learning groups and one control group. They watched the movie 500 Days of Summer for 5 weeks with different vocabulary approaches and the subtitle was introduced in English for all groups. Two tests were used for evaluating learners vocabulary competence; the meaning translation test for receptive vocabulary knowledge, and the sentence construction test for productive vocabulary knowledge. The main findings of the study were as follows: First, for the receptive vocabulary knowledge, the explicit and implicit groups both brought more gains in the post-test, but when the two groups were compared, the implicit group outperformed the explicit group. Second, for the productive vocabulary knowledge, the explicit group showed meaningful statistical results. Lastly, when the delayed post-test after 8 weeks from post-test with 2 types was analyzed to see the long-term memory effect, the explicit group for receptive vocabulary knowledge, the implicit group for productive vocabulary knowledge found to be effective respectively. Based on the results, some pedagogical implications were discussed.

        중학생의 영어 자기효능감과 수업참여도, 그리고 학습자가 인식한 교사의 수업방법이 영어 학업성취에 미치는 영향에 관한 분석

        본 연구는 중학생의 영어 자기효능감, 수업참여도, 그리고 학습자가 인식한 교사의 수업방법이 영어 학업성취에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였다. 연구대상은 부산 소재 중학교 1학년 남녀 학생 140명이었으며, 7개월간 주 3회씩 영어 수업에 참여한 후 설문지를 통해 영어 교과 학업적 자기효능감, 영어 수업참여도, 그리고 교사 중심 수업 및 학습자 중심 수업 인식 정도를 조사하였다. 영어 학업성취도 시험을 통해 앞서 조사한 변수들이 영어 학업성취에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 알아보았고 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 영어 교과 학업적 자기효능감이 영어 학업성취에 정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났고, 학업성취 수준에 따라 집단을 나누어 살펴본 결과 성취도가 낮은 집단에서 자기효능감이 높을수록 학업성취가 높은 것으로 드러났다. 둘째, 학업성취 점수가 낮은 집단에서 영어 수업참여도 중 수업 예·복습 여부가 학업성취와 통계적으로 유의하였고, 중간 이상의 성취도 집단에서는 수업참여도가 학업성취에 미치는 영향이 유의하지 않았다. 셋째, 학습자가 인식한 교사 중심 수업방법 또는 학습자 중심 수업방법 실시 여부는 학업성취와 유의미한 관계를 보여주지 못하였다. 이러한 연구결과는 영어 학업성취가 낮은 학생들을 가르치는 것과 관련하여 교육적 시사점을 제공한다. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of self-efficacy, class engagement, and teaching methods on English academic achievement. The subjects were 140 middle school students from Busan. The students were asked about their self-efficacy, class engagement, and how they perceive their teacher’s teaching methods. The findings from this research are as follows. First, the students’ academic self-efficacy in English played a significant role in their English academic achievement and the effect was greater for students with low academic achievement. Second, the low-achieving students’ lesson preview and review had a positive influence on their English academic achievement, while their lesson preview and review were not proved statistically significant for higher-level students. Lastly, the teaching methods perceived by the students did not show any significant effect on their academic achievement. The findings from the current research will shed light on teaching English to students with low achievement.

        한국 대학에 재학 중인 한국인 · 외국인 대학원생들의 문화간 의사소통능력과 영어매체사용 비교 연구

        The purpose of this study was to compare Korean graduate students and foreign graduate students as sojourners in a Korean university in terms of their intercultural communicative competence and use of English media. For the study, 31 Korean graduate students and 31 foreign graduate students participated in a survey. The survey measured the participants’ use of English media and four dimensions of intercultural communicative competence: Knowledge, attitudes, skills, and awareness. The results showed that the foreign graduate students rated their intercultural communicative competence and use of English media relatively higher than did the Korean graduate students. In addition, both groups’ intercultural communicative competence was positively correlated with their use of English media. The findings will shed light on how effectively English instructors can teach Korean students in tertiary education to be equipped with a high level of intercultural communicative competence, thus ultimately being successful in interacting with people from other parts of the world professionally and personally.

        한국 대학생들의 학습스타일이 영어 구동사 습득에 미치는 영향

        This paper examined Korean college students' learning styles and their effects as a predictor of achievement in English phrasal verbs. The subjects were 84 university students with various majors. The Korean version of Cohen, Oxford and Chi's (2001) Learning Style Survey (LSS) which consists of 11 dimensions, 23 subscales and 110 items was adopted and the achievement tests developed by the researchers were used. The findings revealed that first, learning style preferences of Korean university students were visual, introverted, closure-oriented, global, synthesizing, leveler, deductive, impulsive, intuitive, field dependent, and metaphoric. Except for intuitive and field dependent styles, the others showed strong correlations with their achievement in English phrasal verbs. Second, the metaphoric learning style was a significant predictor of the achievement in English phrasal verbs, which explained 13.8% of English phrasal verbs. In addition, the results of factor analysis for construct validity of LSS revealed 21 subscales under the 8 dimensional constructs with 26 items. Finally, after the multiple regression analysis for factor 1, 'preference on examples' was shown as a predictor of achievement in English phrasal verbs. Some pedagogical implications of the findings will shed light on how to teach English phrasal verbs more effectively.
