The interaction of vortex with a free surface affects many geophysical and environmental flow, including th mixing of pollutants in rivers. Visualized experimental results utilizing LIF technique are discussed for the purpose of characterization of vortex pair interaction with a clean and contaminated free surfaces and rigid, no-slip boundary. The result is that the vortex pair is stable and two-dimensional during the interaction with a clean free surface. However, when the surface is contaminated by a relatively viscous monolayer, the vortex dynamics are significantly altered, resulting in rebounding due to secondary vortex. When a solid plate is brought down to make contact with the clean free surface to provide a no-slip boundary condition, the pair displays similar dynamics to the contaminated surface case but the secondary vortices are somewhat stronger. For both contaminated and rigid surface cases, vortex breakdowns is observed.
