Objective : The aims of this study were to assess histopathology and complications of percutaneous renal biopsies. Methods and Materials : From March 2000 to August 2002, we analyzed 25 cases of renal biopsies at the Department of pediatrics in Paik Hospital, Seoul and Ilsan. The tissue specimens were acquired by renal biopsy under the ultrasound guide. Final diagnosis was established on the tissue specimens by light, fluorescent and electron microscopic examination. Close observation was done for 24 hours after renal biopsies. Results : Among 25 cases, 20 cases were male and 5 cases were female. The male-to-female ratio was 4:1. The age distribution was from 21 months to 21 years, with the median age of 15 years. Final diagnosis of the 25 cases were IgA nephropathy 11 cases(44.0%), minimal lesion 7 cases(28.0%), focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis 3 cases (12.0%), Henoch-Schonlein nephritis 2 cases (8.0%), nonspecific glomerulonephritis 1 cases(4.0%), acute tubular necrosis 1 cases(4.0%). The rate of complications was 36.0%(9/25), including back pain 5 cases(20.0%), gross hematuria 2 cases(8.0%), microscopic hematuria 1 case(4.0%), and subcapsular hematoma 1 case (4.0% ). Conclusion : The percutaneous renal biopsy is relatively safe, and useful for diagnosis and management of glomerular disease.
