Vol.33 No.2
This article analyzed the causal relationships among economic growth, electricity consumption, CO₂ emission, and financial development in Korea during 1971∼2018, using unit root test, cointegration test, and VECM(vector error correction model). The empirical results show that ① financial development has made long-run strong effects on economic growth, electricity consumption, and CO₂ emission, but it has not been affected by the three variables in the long and short-run. ② There have been three bidirectional relationships affecting strongly in the long-run between economic growth and electricity consumption, between electricity consumption and CO₂ emission, and between CO₂ emission and economic growth. ③ CO₂ emission has made effects on economic growth and electricity consumption in the short-run, but it has not been affected by economic growth, electricity consumption, and financial development. The following policy implication is suggested: financial development policy is needed to respond to the changes in economic growth, electricity consumption, and CO₂ emission. Especially, climate financing should be reinforced. This article has limitation of using domestic credit as a proxy variable of financial development, and further research is expected to apply financial instruments, such as stocks, currencies, and liquidity.
