A detail design of overhead catenary system can be divided into a pegging plan and a design of MD(mounting diagram). In the pegging plan, the mast location, staggering and tension length are determined in the longitudinal point of view according to track condition, location of substation and etc. In the MD, a transversal diagram including masts, all of wires, cantilever, foundation and etc. and materials used are shown. This study presents a development of a software to design the MD for a conventional catenary system automatically. In the program, thin walled steel pole, foundation, cantilever, all of wires and etc. are automatically drawn according to the input and catenary conditions. And materials used in the MD and the section can be also managed respectively in the program. This application of the program is developed using C# for input/calculating and using C++(ObjectARX) for drafting the MD, respectively.

Winter weather condition can cause icing and ice coats on 25 ㎸ overhead contact wire. This generates shocks at the mechanical interface of the collecting strips of the pantograph and the contact wire and extra electrical resistance, which may affect quality of current collection at the contact wire / collecting strips of pantograph interface. De-icing operations should be performed just before train operation to avoid the formation of another ice layer. Thus, the work in this paper is investigation and analysis of de-icing system which could be applied to the electric car line of railways.

French supplier for the KTX high speed catenary system established 200N as a upper limit for uplift forces when a train speed was 300km/h. We reviewed the validity of a upper limit for the uplift forces in terms of fatigue life. First of all, bending stresses of a contact wire were calculated using a closed form of formula derived by Japanese railway researchers before. Bending stresses of the wire depend largely on both uplift forces and a ratio of train speed to wave propagation speed. Substituting KTX design parameters into the formula brought us bending stresses below a fatigue limit. We think that 200N is acceptable as a upper limit of uplift forces. However, if a train speed increases to 350㎞/h, 200N is unacceptable because bending stresses exceed the fatigue limit. Therefore, a train speed should be taken into account when determining a upper limit for uplift forces on the contact wire in railway.

Deicing system is to melt frost or ice freezed in catenary line when the temperature is lower than 0℃ in winter. The principle of deicing system is to melt frost or ice by Joule heat of catenary impedance. The performance of deicing is dependant of deicing current determined by the length of deicing section, deicing impedance and current division ratio of catenary line and messenger line. So, we present technique for estimating deicing current and process for determination of deicing section in the conventional line. Deicing impedance is estimated using Carson-Pollaczek equation, and current division ratio of catenary line and messenger line is estimated using voltage drop, and deicing current is estimated using power system data of deicing system. For the determination of the final deicing section, we verified estimated value comparing with experiment value of deicing impedance and current division ratio of catenary line and messenger line using low voltage experiment. Finally, we verified the validity of estimation technique and process using a simulated test data of real deicing system operation in the Chungju Substation, Chungbuk line.

Even if tracks cross each other, a train has to maintain a good current collection. Where catenary cross each other, it is called a crossover. Based on the cause analysis for a breakdown accident of pantograph occurred in the crossover on Ansan-line, a theoretical background and recommendation for the installation rule of a crossover are presented in the paper.

In electric railway, image monitoring using high speed camera provides reliable, timely information of wear and geometry status, important in taking decisions for overhead contact wire maintenance. The contribution of this research is the development of a simple real-time monitoring system for use in measurement subsystem of contact wire and geometry of overhead contact wire in electric railway. The system has been consists of a high speed CMOS camera with resolution 1024 × 1280 pixels, line type laser source and PC-based image acquisition system with PCI Express slot. Vision acquisition software have been used in application programming interface for image acquisition, display, and storage with a frequency of sampling of 500 acquisitions per second.
