Most previous research on the place effects on mental health has focused on compositional characteristics of people living in particular areas, rather than contextual characteristics of places. In this study, we explored what kind of neighborhood social- contextual characteristics can have effects on the residents’ mental health and well-being, and the specific process of how the characteristics are perceived and have positive or negative effects. We conducted secondary analysis of 60 conversational interview data based on a qualitative study samples consisting of 30 adult residents from four different areas in Seoul. This study identified four social-contextual characteristics which may have effects on residents’ mental health: neighborhood reputation, social relationships and support from neighborhood community, order and civility (disorder and incivility), and residential stability. These identified social- contextual characteristics seem to be highly interrelated and should be more carefully studied to better understand the place effects.

The relationship between neighborhood built environment and residents’ mental health can be diverse according to the environmental context where a study is conducted. This study tried to identify what neighborhood built environmental attributes can contribute to residents’ mental health, and the mechanisms of how they can have effects by applying a multi-method qualitative study in Seoul, Korea. For this study, we interviewed 30 adult residents (age 19~49) who have lived in the four areas of Seoul. Analyzing the interview data and photos taken by the participants, we can find diverse neighborhood built environmental attributes -infrastructure for children’s care and education, everyday facilities, nature contact, transportation, street environment, safety, aesthetic characteristics, maintenance, density - can contribute to the residents’ mental health and well-being both in quantitative and qualitative aspects. This study will contribute to the advancement of this research area, which is still in its early stage in Korea, by presenting detailed lived-experience of the residents and providing a basic guideline for the future research.

This study conducted a comprehensive review of existing literature concerning the connection between neighborhood built environmental features and mental health outcomes in Korea. Out of the 38 chosen studies, the collective outcomes indicated that various aspects of the neighborhood built environments (BE), such as land use, street conditions, transportation, parks and green spaces, local facilities, housing, urban design, environmental pollution, safety, and overall quality, displayed associations with mental health outcomes. Nevertheless, inconsistent and contradictory findings were prevalent, possibly due to absence of robust methodological approaches in this research area.
