Vol.50 No.6

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between Saeteom's (North Koreans deserted from their country and newly immigrated into South Korea) use of mass media and their social capital development and sociopolitical participation in their assimilation process. A questionnaire-based survey research produced data in support of the thesis of this study that Saeteomin's mass media use has diverse patterns of influences on their social capital formation and sociopolitical participation. Controlling for demographic variables, Saetermin's TV news viewing exerted a significant negative influence on their online network size, but educational TV program viewing did a positive one. Their newspaper reading had a positive impact on both offline network size and political participation, but a negative one on online network size. Their Internet use yielded a negative influence on institutional trust, but a positive one on both interpersonal trust and on¬line network size. While Saeteomin's institutional trust level had a positive relationship with civic participation, online network activity had a negative influence on civic participation. Both theoretical and practical implications of these findings were discussed.

Vol.13 No.4

This study tries to investigate the newly emerging both the structure of communication network and the pattern of information usage in North Korea. For the above research question, this paper has studied the environmental factors of communications surrounding North Korea. Additionally, this research aims to delve into the mechanismof new communication structure with the analyses of the pattern of information usage of actors. It is found that North Koreans enjoy the multi-network structure, which means that the influences of hierarchical mono-hub network used to be found before ArduousMarch are not working well. The multi-network structure is characterized by the Agency Communication Network(ACN) which is the middle formof multi-hub network and post-hub network of horizontal network. Due to the ACN, the people of North Korea can access diverse information from outside countries. Furthermore, they can communicate as free as they want within the structure of ACN. However, there has emerged severe vigilance from the government to block the free flow of information with the ACN. Even though the monitoring of communication among people by government, the people of North Korea enjoy the privatization of information flow in the ACN, which enables themto exchange diverse types of information with other peoples. It is concluded that the society of North Korea has been moving fromtop-down command society to the quasi-horizontal communication society crossing over regions and sectors.
