The neutron total cross-section of natural Dy has been measured in the energy region from 0.01to 100 eV by using the neutron time-of-flight method at Pohang Neutron Facility, which consistsof an electron linear accelerator, a water-cooled Ta target with a water moderator, and a timeof-flight path with an 11-m length. A 6Li-ZnS(Ag) scintillator with a diameter of 12.5 cm and athickness of 1.5 cm has been used as a neutron detector, and a metallic Dy plate has been used forthe neutron transmission measurement. The background level has been determined by using notchfilters of Co, Ta, and Cd sheets. In order to reduce the gamma rays from bremsstrahlung and fromneutron capture, we have employed a neutron-gamma separation system based on their differentpulse shapes.

The activity of gamma-ray emitting nuclides is calculated assuming that each gamma-ray is detectedindividually; thus, the magnitude of the coincidence summing signal must be considered during activitycalculations. Here, the correction factor for the coincidence summing effect was calculated, and thedetection efficiencies of two HPGe detectors were compared. The CANBERRA Inc. GC4018 high-purity Gedetector provided an estimate for the peak-to-total ratio using a point source to determine the coincidence summing correction factor. The ORTEC Inc. GEM60 high-purity Ge detector uses EFFTRAN in LVisto obtain the parameters of the detector and source model and the gamma-gamma and gamma-X matchestimates, in order to determine the coincidence summing correction factor. Nuclide analyses, radioactivity comparisons, and analyses of reference material samples were performed utilizing certifiedreference materials to accurately determine the detection efficiencies. For both Co-60 and Y-88, thedetection efficiency for a point source increased by an average of at least 12e13%, whereas the detectionefficiency determined using LVis increased by an average of at least 13e15%. The calculated radioactivityvalues of the certified reference material and reference material samples were accurate to within 3% and6% of the measured values, respectively
