Vol.22 No.3

The seasonal and spatial variations of the distribution and the activity of heterotrophic bacterial community in Lake Soyang were studied from March, 1987 to June, 1988. The total bacterial number, colony-forming bacteria, bacterial biomass, and bacterial secondary production were measured in the range of 0.35∼4.22 x 10^6 cells/ml, 1.4 x 10¹∼2.9 x 10⁴ CFU/ml, 5.38∼74.58 ㎍-C/l, and 0.03∼25.34 mg-C/hr/m³, respectively. The turnover time of ³H-gluoose varied from 72.8 to 31780 hours and of ³H-acetate was in the range of 7.9∼13469 hours. The distributions of these microbiological parameters were similar to those of phytoplankton. The seasonal fluctuation of microbiological parameters was higher in summer and lower in winter, and severely affected by the physical factors including water temperature. In the spatial distribution of those parameters, they were higher in the algalblooming sites than others

Vol.0 No.65

HongDamHeon Cheokdok(≪洪湛軒尺牘≫), kept in the Rare Books Collection Division of Peking University library, is a collection of letters and poems sent by Hong Daeyong(洪大容), a scholar of the Chosun Dynasty, to three scholars of the Qing Dynasty, Yan Cheng(嚴誠), Lu Fei(陸飛) and Pan Tingjun(潘庭筠) between 1766 and 1767. The collection is in Luo Yizhi(羅以智)'s Ilha Jegeum Habjip(≪日下題襟合集≫). Through a meticulous translation of these letters collected in HongDamHeon Cheokdok, I found that there were several of his letters that were not in the Korean ancient literary books. My finding is original and different as it will be an important literature material for supplementing or correcting Hong Daeyong’s literary works in the future researches. As HongDamHeon Cheokdok has a lot of volumes, it is difficult to introduce them at once. I, therefore, present only his nine letters out of thirty letters in this paper. On the basis of this paper, I hope to facilitate further researches that can discover not only the missing contents of Hong Daeyong’s anthology, but several unknown stories of the Qing Dynasty’s three scholars.

Vol.0 No.68

This is the third paper in a series of research courses that examine HongDamHeon Cheokdok(洪湛軒尺牘), kept in the Rare Books Collection of Peking University library, comparing four letters--from the 23rd to the 26th letter--with the domestic literary collection and translating it back into Korean. The four letters written by Hong Dae-yong in 1766 contain a number of sentences that reveal his academic thought, while writing down his feelings of missing three Qing Dynasty’s scholars, Yan Cheng(嚴誠), Pan TingJun(潘庭筠) and Lu Fei(陸飛) desperately. In the 23rd letter, he said that the purpose of reading books is to reveal the truth and deal with many things, so knowledge and practice must be combined. In the 24th letter, he referred to “Silhak(實學)” and further emphasized his academic attitude. In the 25th letter, he asked for the ultimate reason of Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, referring to the famous words of several philosophers. Nine poems in the 26th letter were written by Hong Dae-yong to Yan Cheng in September 1766. Through a comparative study of this letter and Hong Dae-yong’s DamHeonSeo(湛軒書), I investigate they are an unknown poems not written in DamHeonSeo.

Vol.29 No.6

Physical and chemical environmental factors influencing on the outbreak of freshwater red tide by Peridinium bipes (dinoflagellate) in Soyang Reservoir were studied. Red tide occured in the site of inflowing of tributary streams annually, but the extent and severity of red tide varied from year to year. Several environmental factors such as water level, nutrient releasing from sediment, cyst resuspension, and concentrations of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$were studiedin relation to development, extent, and duration of red tide. In June of 1989 and 1991, the red tides of Peridinium bipes were very severe, and these red tides coincided with notable and rapid drawdown of lake water in late spring. Nutrient releasing and cyst resuspension by turbulence during drawdown were suggested as main causes of red tide. The quanity of nutrient releasing from sediment and hydrometeorological factors such as run-off and wind may determine the extent and duration of red tide.

Vol.29 No.6

Effects of freshwater red tide of Peridinium bipes (dinoflagellate) in August of 1991 on the carbon flux through the microbial loop were studied in Soyang Reservoir. Chlorophyll a and primary production, bacterial production in red tide area were 22, 18 and 400 times higher, respectively, than other sites. Phytoplandton biomass comprised 97% and 20% of food source of zooplankton grazing within and without red tide, respectively. The percent bacterial production supported by phytoplankton exudate was 14% within red tide and >100% without red tide. In laboratory experiments, more than 85% organic carbon of Peridinium biomass was released or degraded by heterotrophic bacteria within 14 days. As results of red tide of Peridinium with sudden influx of organic carbon in water column, the main food source of zooplankton and dependency of bacteria on phytoplankton exudate were changed. Therefore, the relative importance of microbial loop to grazing food web was changed.

Vol.0 No.66

This is the second paper in a series of research courses that examine HongDamHeon Cheokdok(≪洪湛軒尺牘≫), kept in the Rare Books Collection Division of Peking University library, comparing 13 letters--from the tenth to the 22nd letter--with the domestic literary collection and translating it back into Korean. Most of these letters were written in February 1766 when the Chosun’s envoy, Hong Dae-yong(洪大容), stayed in Beijing, and only the 22nd letter was written by Hong Dae-yong in late July of the same year to ask his regards to a scholar of the Qing Dynasty, Yan Cheng(嚴誠), after he returned to Chosun. Through a comparative study of these letters and Hong Dae-yong’s DamHeonSeo (≪湛軒書≫), a collection of documents published in the Chosun Dynasty, I investigate and reveal the differences between the two books, as well as an unknown story not written in DamHeonSeo (≪湛軒書≫), such as the postscript at the end of the 10th and 13th letters. In addition, the 11th letter includes NonSeongSeo (≪論性書≫) written by Chosun’s Kim Won-haeng(金元行) and annotations written by a scholar of Qing Dynasty. On the basis of these contents, I examine the traces of high-level academic exchanges and discussions made between scholars of both Dynasties.
