In this study, the characteristics of various fortress facilities and building sites were examined through a comparison of archaeological data and the characteristics and results revealed by excavations of the Jeonju Donggo Mountain Fortress were studied. What is now present day Jeonju was the capital city of the Post Baekje kingdom. Despite the Donggo Mountain Fortress being the only refuge fortress known in academia, the state of research and interpretation of archaeological data dealing with it is quite weak. Indeed, many researchers are only aware of the fact that the Donggo Mountain Fortress was administered by the Post Baekje dynasty, and no concrete study of fortress facilities and inner-fort facilities has been conducted to investigate the identity of the Donggo Mountain Fortress during that period. Accordingly, in this study, ruins excavated up to the present time were systematically organized and a comparative study of important artifacts and ruins was carried out. Through this method, this study sought to bring to light facts about the extensive reconstruction carried out by the Post Baekje’s king Kyeonhweon, and at the same time, a greater understanding of the initial construction and later reconstruction periods. This study also attempted to understand the fortress"s identity within the structural aspects of the building site. Besides this, this study tries to infer the period of administration of Donggo Mountain Fortress through the comparison of indicative artifacts of that time. Finding traces of the Post Baekje in Jeonju, which functioned as the capital of the Post Baekje during 36 of the dynasty’s 45 years in power, is one of the main tasks of the present day. It is believed that starting the search in the Donggo Mountain Fortress is the core of this task. Likewise, there is a need for in-depth analysis of archaeological data for more developed research of Donggo Mountain Fortress’s identity. Furthermore, through the selection of material data related to the capital city and Later Baekje kingdom along with the expansion and accumulation of archaeological data, the life breathe of Later Baekje, buried in history’s depths, should be awakened.

The north, east and west gates of Donggosan fortress in Jeonju show considerable stylistic variations that possibly reflect different time periods. This paper examines and discusses the temporal changes of these gates. The first stage is characterized by the Eogeutmun-type gate, and is dated to the Baekje Period. The edges of the gates change from angular to round shape, and this change presumably occurred around the early 7th century AD. The second stage is the time of the Hyeonmun-type and the Pyeongmun-type gates, which were built out of flagstones and crushed stones. The east gate and the second north gate were made in these types. The east gate is estimated to be around the mid 7th or the early 8th century AD. The dates of the lower lintel grooves and iron hinges generally center around this time period. This introduction of new fortress types reflects socio-political changes, particularly the collapse of Baekje and the establishment of new regional capital in Wansanju in modern day Jeonju. The third stage witnessed some changes in the Pyeongmun-type gate. The third north gate changed in its function to a secret door, and fishbone-patterned roof tiles associated with the gate indicate that the gate is dated to the late 9th century AD. During this period, Gyeonhwon, the king of Hubaekje, established a new capital in Jeonju. Finally, the abandonment of the west gate after the collapse of Hubaekje can be designated as the fourth stage.
