The north, east and west gates of Donggosan fortress in Jeonju show considerable stylistic variations that possibly reflect different time periods. This paper examines and discusses the temporal changes of these gates. The first stage is characterized by the Eogeutmun-type gate, and is dated to the Baekje Period. The edges of the gates change from angular to round shape, and this change presumably occurred around the early 7th century AD. The second stage is the time of the Hyeonmun-type and the Pyeongmun-type gates, which were built out of flagstones and crushed stones. The east gate and the second north gate were made in these types. The east gate is estimated to be around the mid 7th or the early 8th century AD. The dates of the lower lintel grooves and iron hinges generally center around this time period. This introduction of new fortress types reflects socio-political changes, particularly the collapse of Baekje and the establishment of new regional capital in Wansanju in modern day Jeonju. The third stage witnessed some changes in the Pyeongmun-type gate. The third north gate changed in its function to a secret door, and fishbone-patterned roof tiles associated with the gate indicate that the gate is dated to the late 9th century AD. During this period, Gyeonhwon, the king of Hubaekje, established a new capital in Jeonju. Finally, the abandonment of the west gate after the collapse of Hubaekje can be designated as the fourth stage.
