Element Free Galerkin Method applying Penalty Function Method
Vol.1 No.1
In this study, various available meshless methods are briefly reviewed and the connection among them is investigated. The objective of meshless methods is to eliminate some difficulties which are originated from reliance on a mesh by constructing the approximation entirely in terms of nodes. Especially, focusing on Element Free Galerkin Method(EFGM) based on moving least square interpolants(MLS1). a new implementation is developed based on a variational principle with penalty function method were used to enforce the essential boundary condition. In addition , the weighted orthogonal basis functions are constructed to overcome disadvantage of MLSI.
Optimal treatment strategies of Tuberculosis in South Korea
Vol.5 No.1
We have developed a tuberculosis (TB) model in South Korea using the SEIR model with the time-dependent parameters. South Korea ranked the highest TB incidence among members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in 2004. The observed data from the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) shows a certain rise of the incidence people after 2001 yr because of increasing foreign workers with active-TB and starting the operation of the Korean Tuberculosis Surveillance System. The least-square curve fitting has been used for fitting the parameters in our model to the observed data. In this work, we also propose the optimal treatment strategies of TB model in South Korea using optimal control theory based on our TB model from 2001 yr to 2008 yr.
FREE TERMINAL TIME OPTIMAL CONTROL PROBLEMOF AN HIV MODEL
Vol.5 No.1
We consider a free terminal time optimal control problemof human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) type 1 infection . We describe an optimal tracking problem attempting to move the state of the system from an “unhealthy” state (high virus load and low immune response) to a “healthy” one (with low viral load and high immune effector levels). We derive an optimal treatment time as well as HIV therapeutic strategies. We demonstrate optimal treatment protocol can lead to long-term control of HIV by the strong immune effector by numerical simulations.

Mathematical models and numerical simulations of flows driven by pumping without valves (valveless pumping) are presented. This work has been originally motivated by a biomedical objective to explain the complicated valveless blood flow mechanism in the circulation. For instance, the fetal circulation before the formation of valves and blood circulation during cardiopulmonary resuscitation. A mathematical model of valveless pumping either in a closed loop system or in an open system consists of a couple of tubes with different elasticities or radii. In this work, we develop new models which are not necessarily connected by two different materials. Although only one soft material is used or the soft and rigid materials are not connected, we have observed the existence of a net flow driven by the periodic compress-and-release action and the important features of valveless pumping that have been observed in earlier models or experiments. Our important result is that the direction and the magnitude of a net flow can be explained by the sign and the amount of power, which is work done on the fluid by the fluid pressure and the elastic wall over one period, respectively. A new feature in this work is that only one elastic material is sufficient to show the existence of a net flow in a valveless pump system. Because of a simple structure in our new model, it is much easier to construct a valveless pump system applicable to real world applications, such as a microelectromechanical system device.
Performance Modeling and Analysis for Minimum Energy Consumption in A Two-hop Relay Network
Vol.5 No.1
In this paper we consider a two-hop relay network consisting of a source, a destination and multiple relay nodes which operate with Decode-and-Forward (DF) protocol. For a given quality of service (QoS) requirement such as transmission rate between the source and the destination, one relay node is selected and the selected relay node adapts its power to meet the QoS requirement. The relay selection and the adaptive power control scheme are based on the channel condition between relay nodes and the destination. By considering the details on the operations of the relay node selection protocol and the length of the source transmission time, we first develop a mathematical model for the relay network and analyze total average energy consumption. Based on our analytic results, we formulate an optimization problem of finding the optimal length of source transmission time that minimizes total average energy consumption. We provide some numerical examples to investigate the behavior of total average energy consumption of the relay network and show that our proposed scheme outperforms previously proposed schemes where the source and the relay node transmission times are the same.

It is well known that traffic in wired network has self-similar property (e.g. in ethernet LAN [1], wide area network [2], and WorldWideWeb [3]). In spite of the differences in implementation, traffic in wireless network is also known to have self-similar property (e.g. in wireless LAN [4], CDPD network [5], and ad hoc network [6]). In [7], the authors present performance analysis of a queue serving Gaussian traffic when the service rate is constant. Since the service rate in a wireless channel varies in time, a queue under a wireless channel has different performance than a queue with constant service rate. Hence, it is necessary to study the queue performance under a wireless channel. The FBM (Fractional Brownian Motion) traffic model is the simplest and most widely studied model describing self-similar process [8][9]. In addition, the Rayleigh fading channel model is widely used to describe a wireless fading channel. In this paper, we use them to consider a general wireless system. The objective of this paper is to provide the overflow probability of the queue fed by the FBM input traffic under Rayleigh fading channel.
An exact solution of location of a circle to a set of the weighted points
Vol.5 No.1
We consider the minimax problems of location of the circle to a set of the weighted points with passing through the two fixed points. The problem can be applied to design of nano-scale circuits and facility location. We suggested the problem properties and the solution procedure. Finally, we resolved to find an exact solution of location of a circle with the suggested constraints and posted the numerical computation time with the number of points.
Hair Separation and Detection in Mutant Drosophila Hair Images
Vol.5 No.1
To test the genotoxicity of drug candidates in the process of drug discovery, The Drosophila wing somatic mutation and recombination test (SMART)[3][1] is used, which analyzes the development frequency of mutant hairs of Drosophila. Because the current mutant hair counting method is totally manual work, in which humans search and count the mutant hairs by their eyes through the microscope, its speed and accuracy is limited. Our goal is to culture the mutant Drosophila using possibly genotoxic chemicals, to take the image of Drosophila wing hair, and to develop an automated system that counts mutant hairs and tells the genotoxicity of the chemicals. In this work, we explain the image acquisition method using multi-focused image stack, hair separation method into upper and lower hair, and hair detection method using template matching.
