      • CANDELS Sheds Light on the Environmental Quenching of Low-mass Galaxies

        Guo, Yicheng,Bell, Eric F.,Lu, Yu,Koo, David C.,Faber, S. M.,Koekemoer, Anton M.,Kurczynski, Peter,Lee, Seong-Kook,Papovich, Casey,Chen, Zhu,Dekel, Avishai,Ferguson, Henry C.,Fontana, Adriano,Giavalis American Astronomical Society 2017 ASTROPHYSICAL JOURNAL LETTERS - Vol.841 No.2

<P>We investigate the environmental quenching of galaxies, especially those with stellar masses (M-*) < 10(9.5) Me-circle dot, beyond the local universe. Essentially all local low-mass quenched galaxies (QGs) are believed to live close to massive central galaxies, which is a demonstration of environmental quenching. We use CANDELS data to test whether or not such a dwarf QG-massive central galaxy connection exists beyond the local universe. For this purpose, we only need a statistically representative, rather than complete, sample of low-mass galaxies, which enables our study to z greater than or similar to 1.5. For each low-mass galaxy, we measure the projected distance (d(proj)) to its nearest massive neighbor (M-* > 10(10.5) M-circle dot) within a redshift range. At a given z and M-*, the environmental quenching effect is considered to be observed if the d(proj) distribution of QGs (d(proj)(Q)) is significantly skewed toward lower values than that of star-forming galaxies (d(proj)(SF)). For galaxies with 10(8) M-circle dot < M-* < 10(10) M-circle dot, such a difference between d(proj)(Q) and d(proj)(SF) is detected up to z similar to 1. Also, about 10% of the quenched galaxies in our sample are located between two and four virial radii (R-Vir) of the massive halos. The median projected distance from low-mass QGs to their massive neighbors, d(proj)(Q)/R-Vir, decreases with satellite M-* at M-* less than or similar to 10(9.5) M-circle dot, but increases with satellite M-* at M-* greater than or similar to 10(9.5) M-circle dot. This trend suggests a smooth, if any, transition of the quenching timescale around M-* similar to 10(9.5) M-circle dot at 0.5 < z < 1.0.</P>

Infall Signatures in a Prestellar Core Embedded in the High-mass 70 <i>μ</i>m Dark IRDC G331.372-00.116

        Contreras, Yanett,Sanhueza, Patricio,Jackson, James M.,Guzmá,n, André,s E.,Longmore, Steven,Garay, Guido,Zhang, Qizhou,Nguyê,̃,n-Lu’o’, Quang,Tatematsu, Ken’ichi,Nakamura, Fumita American Astronomical Society 2018 The Astrophysical journal Vol.861 No.1

<P>Using Galactic Plane surveys, we have selected a massive (1200M circle dot), cold (14 K) 3.6-70 mu m dark IRDC, G331.372-00.116. This infrared dark cloud (IRDC) has the potential to form high-mass stars, and given the absence of current star formation signatures, it seems to represent the earliest stages of high-mass star formation. We have mapped the whole IRDC with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) at 1.1 and 1.3 mm in dust continuum and line emission. The dust continuum reveals 22 cores distributed across the IRDC. In this work, we analyze the physical properties of the most massive core, ALMA1, which has no molecular outflows detected in the CO (2-1), SiO (5-4), and H2CO (3-2) lines. This core is relatively massive (M = 17.6M circle dot), subvirialized (virial parameter alpha(vir) = M-vir/M = 0.14), and is barely affected by turbulence (transonic Mach number of 1.2). Using the HCO+ (3-2) line, we find the first detection of infall signatures in a relatively massive, prestellar core (ALMA1) with the potential to form a high-mass star. We estimate an infall speed of 1.54 km s(-1) and a high accretion rate of 1.96. x. 10(-3) M circle dot yr(-1). ALMA1 is rapidly collapsing, out of virial equilibrium, which is more consistent with competitive accretion scenarios rather than the turbulent core accretion model. On the other hand, ALMA1 has a mass similar to 6 times larger than the clumps Jeans mass, as it is in an intermediate mass regime (M-J = 2.7 < M less than or similar to 30 M circle dot), contrary to what both the competitive accretion and turbulent core accretion theories predict.</P>

      • THE EVOLUTION OF THE GALAXY STELLAR MASS FUNCTION AT<i>z</i>= 4-8: A STEEPENING LOW-MASS-END SLOPE WITH INCREASING REDSHIFT

        Song, Mimi,Finkelstein, Steven L.,Ashby, Matthew L. N.,Grazian, A.,Lu, Yu,Papovich, Casey,Salmon, Brett,Somerville, Rachel S.,Dickinson, Mark,Duncan, K.,Faber, Sandy M.,Fazio, Giovanni G.,Ferguson, He American Astronomical Society 2016 The Astrophysical Journal Vol.825 No.1

<P>We present galaxy stellar mass functions (GSMFs) at z = 4-8 from a rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) selected sample of similar to 4500 galaxies, found via photometric redshifts over an area of similar to 280 arcmin(2) in the Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS)/Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) fields and the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. The deepest Spitzer/IRAC data to date and the relatively large volume allow us to place a better constraint at both the low- and high-mass ends of the GSMFs compared to previous space-based studies from pre-CANDELS observations. Supplemented by a stacking analysis, we find a linear correlation between the rest-frame UV absolute magnitude at 1500 angstrom (M-UV) and logarithmic stellar mass (log M-*) that holds for galaxies with log(M-*/M-circle dot) less than or similar to 10. We use simulations to validate our method of measuring the slope of the log M-*-M-UV relation, finding that the bias is minimized with a hybrid technique combining photometry of individual bright galaxies with stacked photometry for faint galaxies. The resultant measured slopes do not significantly evolve over z = 4-8, while the normalization of the trend exhibits a weak evolution toward lower masses at higher redshift. We combine the log M-*-M-UV distribution with observed rest-frame UV luminosity functions at each redshift to derive the GSMFs, finding that the low-mass-end slope becomes steeper with increasing redshift from alpha = -1.55(-0.07)(+0.08) at z = 4 to alpha = -2.25(-0.35)(+0.72) at z = 8. The inferred stellar mass density, when integrated over M-* = 10(8)-10(13) M-circle dot, increases by a factor of 10(-2)(+30) between z = 7 and z = 4 and is in good agreement with the time integral of the cosmic star formation rate density.</P>

      • The human AQP4 gene : Definition of the locus encoding two water channel polypeptides in brain

        LU, MINGOI,LEE, M.DOUGLAS,SMITH, BARBARA L.,JUNG, JIN SUP,AGRE, PETER,VERDUK, MARIAN A.J.,MERKX, GERARD,RUSS, JOHAN P.L.,DEEN, PETER M.T. 부산대학교 유전공학연구소 1996 분자생물학 연구보 Vol.12 No.-

The aquaporin family of membrane water transport proteins are expressed in diverse tissues, and in brain the predominant water channel protein is AQP4. Here we report the isolation and characterization of the human AQP4 cDNAs and genomic DNA. Two cDNAs were isolated corresponding to the two initiating methionines (M1 in a 323-aa polypeptide and M23 in a 301-aa polypeptide) previously indentified in rat [Jung, J. S., Bhat, R. V., Preston, G. M., Guggino, W. B. & Agre, P. (1994) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 91, 13052-13056]. Similar to other aquaporins, the AQP4 gene is composed of four exons encoding 127, 55, 27, and 92 amino acids separated by introns of 0.8, 0.3, and 5.2 kb. Unlike other aquaporins, an alternative coding initiation sequence (designated exon 0) was located 2.7 kb upstream of exon 1. When spliced together, M1 and the subsequent 10 amino acids are encoded by exon 0; the next 11 amino acids and M23 are encoded by exon 1. Transcription initiation sites have been mapped in the proximal promoters of exons 0 and 1. RNase protection revealed distinct transcripts corresponding to M1 and M23 mRNAs, and AQP4 immunoblots of cerebellum demonstrated reactive polypeptides of 31 and 34 kDa. Using a P1 and a λEMBL subclone, the chromosomal site of the human AQP4 gene was mapped to chromosome 18 at the junction of q11.2 and q12.1 by fluorescence in situ hybridization. These studies may now permit molecular characterization of AQP4 during human development and in clinical disorders.

Determination of N* amplitudes from associated strangeness production in p+p collisions

        Mü,nzer, R.,Fabbietti, L.,Epple, E.,Lu, S.,Klose, P.,Hauenstein, F.,Herrmann, N.,Grzonka, D.,Leifels, Y.,Maggiora, M.,Pleiner, D.,Ramstein, B.,Ritman, J.,Roderburg, E.,Salabura, P.,Sarantsev, A.,B North-Holland Pub. Co 2018 Physics letters. Section B Vol.785 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We present the first determination of the energy-dependent amplitudes of N⁎ resonances extracted from their decay in KΛ pairs in p+p → pK + Λ reactions. A combined Partial Wave Analysis of seven data samples with exclusively reconstructed p+p → pK + Λ events measured by the COSY-TOF, DISTO, FOPI and HADES Collaborations in fixed target experiments at kinetic energies between 2.14 to 3.5 GeV is used to determine the amplitude of the resonant and non-resonant contributions into the associated strangeness final state. The contribution of seven N⁎ resonances with masses between 1650 MeV/c2 and 1900 MeV/c2 for an excess energy between 0 and 600 MeV has been considered. The Σ–p cusp and final state interactions for the p–Λ channel are also included as coherent contributions in the PWA. The N⁎ contribution is found to be dominant with respect to the phase space emission of the pK Λ + final state at all energies demonstrating the important role played by both N⁎ and interference effects in hadron–hadron collisions.</P>

      • Study of historical Chinese lacquer culture and technology - Analysis of Chinese Qin-Han dynasty lacquerware

        Sung, M.,Jung, J.,Lu, R.,Miyakoshi, T. Elsevier 2016 Journal of cultural heritage Vol.21 No.-

<P>A Chinese Qin-Han dynasty lacquerware was analyzed by cross-section, field emission scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX), strontium isotope ratios (Sr-87/Sr-86), carbon-14 age determination, and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The carbon-14 analysis results showed that the wood base was from a Zelkova schneideriana tree grown in the Yangtze River area about 2300 years ago, and the film was sap collected from lacquer tree about 2200-2250 years ago. The Sr-87/Sr-86 isotope ratio was 0.71146 consistent with that of the Chinese mainland ( >0.71). Pyrolysis GC-MS detected 3-heptylphenol and 3-pentadecylphenol in the mass chromatograms at m/z=108, and palmitic acid and stearic acid were detected at m/z=60, suggesting that the sap collected from Toxicodendron vernicifluum tree and that many additives had been added. The cross-section and EDX revealed the coating technique and pigment species of lacquerware. Based on these results, the Chinese Qin-Han Dynasty lacquer culture is discussed. A Relationship of Sex Hormone Levels and Erectile Dysfunction: Which Tests Should Be Done Routinely?

        Talha M?ezzino?lu,Bilal G?m??,G?khan Temelta?,Zeki Arı,Co?kun B?y?ksu 연세대학교의과대학 2007 Yonsei medical journal Vol.48 No.6

Purpose: In this study, the relationship between sex hormone levels and erectile dysfunction (ED), as well as the necessity of routinely measuring sex hormone levels were evaluated. Materials and Methods: This study included one hundred patients admitted to a urology clinic for sexual dysfunction. To determine the hormone levels, following the history (included IIEF-5 score) and physical examination, triple blood samples were collected at intervals of 15 minutes between 08:00 and 10:00 am. Total and free testosterone, prolactin, follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone levels were studied. Results: Mean age was 43 (23-80) years. IIEF-5 score was less than 21 [9.8-4.3 (3-19)] in all study groups. There was a statistically significant correlation between tT and FSH, as well as between LH and FSH in Pearson (r =-0.513, p<0.001, respectively) and also in Spearman tests (r=-0.224, p=0.042 and r=-0.459, p<0.001, respectively). However, there was no correlation between age and serum hormone levels (p>0.05). Of the 100 patients, 18 (18%) had low tT, 77 (77%) had normal and 5 (5%) had high tT levels. No statistically significant correlation was found between decreased libido and tT levels (p>0.05). Twelve (66.6%) of the 18 patients with low tT had normal libido. Conclusion: Analyzing the medical history in detail and performing a thorough physical examination can reduce the need for excessive studies and consultations, and enables patients to save time and costs.

Formation of mesostructured titania thin films using isopropoxide precursors

        G.Q.M. Lu,I. Kartini,P. Meredith,Diniz da Costa,J. D. Riches 한국물리학회 2004 Current Applied Physics Vol.4 No.2-4

Mesostructured titania thin lms were prepared by an evaporation-induced self-assembly process. The highly acidic sol pre-cursors contained titanium(IV) tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) as a titanium source, a tri-block copolymer Pluronic P123 as a template, and acetylacetonate and HCl as hydrolysis inhibitors. Characteristics of the resultant titania thin lms were studied using X-raydiraction (XRD) analysis, N2-adsorption/desorption analysis, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). XRD and TEMinvestigations on the as-synthesised lms revealed the appearance of cubic-like, pseudohexagonal, and lamellar mesophases;depending on the amount of water in the sols of lm precursors. Template removal by a calcination process yields high surface area(320360 m2/g) mesoporous materials with crystalline anatase frameworks. Water content also inuences the degree of anatasecrystallinity of the calcined lms. Higher water content resulted in improved anatase crystallinity. These nanostructured materialsare of interest for photocatalysts, photoelectrochemical solar cells and other photonic devices.

Comparison of Outcomes in Immediate ImplantBased Breast Reconstruction: Acellular Dermal Matrix versus Inferior Dermal Flap

        Mata Ribeiro Luís,Meireles Rita P.,Brito Irís M.,Costa Patrícia M.,Rebelo Marco A.,Barbosa Rui F.,Choupina Miguel P.,Pinho Carlos J.,Ribeiro Matilde P. 대한성형외과학회 2022 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.49 No.2

Background Implant-based breast reconstruction has evolved tremendously in the last decades, mainly due to the development of new products and techniques that make the procedure safer and more reliable. The purpose of this study was to compare the outcomes in immediate one-stage breast reconstruction between acellular dermal matrix (ADM) and inferior dermal flap (IDF).Methods We conducted a retrospective comparative study of patients submitted to immediate breast reconstructions with an anatomical implant and ADM or IDF in a single center between 2016 and 2018. Outcomes evaluated included major complications, early complications, reinterventions, readmissions, and reconstruction failure. Simple descriptive statistics and univariate analysis were performed. Results A total of 118 breast reconstructions (85 patients) were included in the analysis. Patients in the IDF group had a higher body mass index (median = 27.0) than patients in the ADM group (median = 24). There were no statistically significant differences among both groups regarding immediate major complication, early complications, readmissions, and reinterventions. Conclusion There are no significant differences in complications between the ADM and IDF approach to immediate implant breast reconstruction. In patients with higher body mass index and large, ptotic breasts, we recommend an immediate implant reconstruction with IDF.
