Associations Between L2 Proficiency and Efficacy of Corrective Feedback Types
Yusuke Sato 아시아테플 2022 The Journal of Asia TEFL Vol.19 No.2
This study examined the relative effectiveness of recasts, explicit correction, and metalinguistic prompts on developing English past progressive forms among second language (L2) learners, and whether the effectiveness of each feedback type was differently associated with L2 proficiency. A total of 197 Japanese learners of English as a foreign language were divided into recast, explicit correction, metalinguistic prompt, task-only, and test control groups. The first three groups performed tasks and received corrective feedback (CF). The task-only group performed the same tasks as the CF groups but did not receive CF. The test control group did not perform the tasks and solely took pretests and posttests. The results showed that explicit types of feedback (explicit correction and metalinguistic prompts) were more effective than implicit feedback (recasts). Further, simple regression analyses showed that L2 proficiency was significantly associated with gains in scores of the recast and metalinguistic prompt groups but not the explicit correction group. These results suggest that L2 proficiency differentially influences the effectiveness of different CF types.

This study examined the effects of three different types of corrective feedback (CF) on the acquisition of declarative/procedural knowledge of the English past tense in a foreign language (FL) classroom setting. The participants comprised Japanese university students, and five classes were assigned to recasts, explicit correction, metalinguistic prompt, task-only, and test control groups. The first three groups performed tasks designed to elicit past-tense forms and received CF. The task-only group performed the tasks without any CF, while the test control group completed pretests and posttests only. Participants’ declarative and procedural knowledge of the past tense was measured at the pretest, immediate posttest, and delayed posttest. The results generally showed that recasts and explicit correction were effective for the development of declarative knowledge of the structures, while metalinguistic prompts were beneficial for the development of procedural knowledge. Thus, metalinguistic prompts would be one of the best types of feedback to provide in an FL classroom setting to help learners develop procedural knowledge of past-tense forms. However, to effectively develop their declarative knowledge of past-tense forms, recasts and explicit correction should also be provided.

Every year, the Imperial Court was sending a messenger to the Shogunate as a gift of the beginning of the year. This etiquette was one of the most important one in the Edo era, and, as for this etiquette,Japanese feudal lords had to attend to the messenger. In other words, the Shogunate and the Imperial Court and Japanese feudal lords were concerned with this etiquette. Therefore,I think that I can make clear the relations between them from examination of this etiquette.

Background/AimsPatients with achalasia-related esophageal motility disorders (AEMDs) frequently present with dilated and sigmoid esophagus, and develop esophageal diverticulum (ED), although the prevalence and patients characteristics require further elucidation. MethodsWe conducted a multicenter cohort study of 3707 patients with AEMDs from 14 facilities in Japan. Esophagography on 3682 patients were analyzed. ResultsStraight (n = 2798), sigmoid (n = 684), and advanced sigmoid esophagus (n = 200) were diagnosed. Multivariate analysis revealed that long disease duration, advanced age, obesity, and type I achalasia correlate positively, whereas severe symptoms and integrated relaxation pressure correlate negatively with development of sigmoid esophagus. In contrast, Grade II dilation (3.5-6.0 cm) was the most common (52.9%), while grade III dilation (≥ 6 cm) was rare (5.0%). We found early onset, male, obesity, and type I achalasia correlated positively, while advanced age correlated negatively with esophageal dilation. Dilated and sigmoid esophagus were found mostly in types I and II achalasia, but typically not found in spastic disorders. The prevalence of ED was low (n = 63, 1.7%), and non-dilated esophagus and advanced age correlated with ED development. Patients with right-sided ED (n = 35) had a long disease duration (P = 0.005) with low integrated relaxation pressure values (P = 0.008) compared with patients with left-sided ED (n = 22). Patients with multiple EDs (n = 6) had lower symptom severity than patients with a single ED (P = 0.022). ConclusionsThe etiologies of dilated esophagus, sigmoid esophagus, and ED are considered multifactorial and different. Early diagnosis and optimal treatment of AEMDs are necessary to prevent these conditions.
Salicylamide Enhances Melanin Synthesis in B16F1 Melanoma Cells
( Yusuke Ito ),( Kazuomi Sato ) 한국응용약물학회 2021 Biomolecules & Therapeutics(구 응용약물학회지) Vol.29 No.4
Salicylamide, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), is used as an analgesic and antipyretic agent. We have previously shown that several NSAIDs have anti-melanogenic properties in B16F1 melanoma cells. In contrast, we have found that salicylamide enhances melanin contents in B16F1 melanoma cells; however, the underlying mechanism is not known. Therefore, we investigated the mechanism through which salicylamide stimulates melanogenesis. Interestingly, salicylamide enhanced diphenolase activity in a cell-free assay. Western blotting and real-time RT-PCR revealed that salicylamide increased tyrosinase expression via transcriptional activation of the Mitf gene. Together, our results indicate that salicylamide could be used as an antihypopigmentation agent for skin and/or hair.
Magnetic Properties of C15 the Laves-phase Compound SmRu2
Yusuke Amakai,Mototsugu Sato,Shigeyuki Murayama,Naoki Momono,Hideaki Takano 한국물리학회 2013 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.63 No.3
We report the magnetic properties of the polycrystalline C15 Laves-phase rare-earth compoundSmRu2. The sample of SmRu2 was made by using an arc-melt method and was annealed under500 C in vacuumed quartz tube for 50 hours. The magnetic susceptibility χ of SmRu2 followsa Curie-Weiss law at temperature above 80 K. The effective paramagnetic moment peff is 1.39µB/Sm-atom, and the Weiss temperature has a positive value of 42 K. The low-temperature χ forT < 60 K increases rapidly with decreasing temperature. In the resistivity and the specific heatCp, we found an inflection and a jump, respectively, at about 55 K. Furthermore, we observed ahysteresis in the magnetic field dependence of the magnetization at 2 K. These experimental resultssuggest that the C15 Laves-phase compound SmRu2 is a ferromagnetic material with TC 55 K.

Interleaved converters are a typical solution to enhance a current capacity and reduce current ripples of input or output ports. Conventional interleaved LLC converters need additional switches and feedback control loop, or some passive components, for active current balancing, increasing the circuit complexity and cost. This paper proposes a novel three-phase interleaved LLC converter with an automatic capacitive current balancing capability. Two flying capacitors contribute to not only the automatic capacitive current balancing but also reduced switch voltage stresses and asymmetric resonant operations to reduce RMS currents. The operation analysis and capacitive current balancing capability are discussed. The experimental verification using a 1-kW prototype demonstrated that the automatic capacitive current balancing could be achieved despite the significant mismatch in transformers’ parameters.
