      • Design of binder-free phosphor paste for warm white LEDs

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Cerium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG: Ce) is used to convert blue light which is emitted from InGaN-based LED chip for white light. In this study, the phosphor paste was prepared using monodispersed spherical YAG: Ce phosphor synthesized by co-precipitation based on one-pot synthesis. Also, orange-red emitting Sr<SUB>2</SUB>Si<SUB>5</SUB>N<SUB>8</SUB>:Eu<SUP>2+</SUP> (SSN: Eu) phosphor was added to confirm the change in optical characteristics. Alpha terpineol was used as a paste solvent because it enabled easy screen-printing. Phosphor paste films for optoelectronic devices were prepared by coating on a glass substrate using a doctor blade method. We compared the conversion efficacy, color rendering index (CRI), and correlated color temperature (CCT) of YAG: Ce which is added to various amounts of SSN: Eu. We measured scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images to confirm the difference of porosity between, depending on binder addition.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We fabricated phosphor paste without binding for white LEDs. </LI> <LI> Binder-free phosphor paste was fabricated, which is must be improved fill the pore for luminous efficiency. </LI> <LI> We believe that our results will become applications of warm white LEDs. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Anti-angiogenic effect of tetraacetyl-phytosphingosine

        <P>Abstract: </P><P>In a search for the wound healing accelerators, we found that tetraacetyl-phytosphingosine (TAPS), a sphingolipid metabolite produced by phytosphingosine acetylation, has significant inhibitory potential on healing of rabbit ear wound. As angiogenesis is fundamental to proper wound healing, we examined the effect of TAPS on angiogenesis using human umbilical vein endothelial cells cultured in vitro. TAPS markedly decreased vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-induced chemotactic migration and capillary-like tube formation. Recognizing its inhibitory potential on angiogenesis, we further investigated the action mechanism of TAPS. TAPS significantly inhibited VEGF-induced proteolytic enzyme production, including matrix metalloproteinase-2, urokinase-type plasminogen activator and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1. TAPS also suppressed VEGF-induced phosphorylation of p42/44 extracellular signal-regulated kinase and c-Jun N-terminal kinase. In addition, TAPS abolished VEGF-induced intracellular calcium increase, measured using laser scanning confocal microscopy. Together, these results suggest that TAPS exerts its inhibitory action on angiogenesis through the inhibition of mitogen-activated protein kinase activation and intracellular calcium increase, thereby affecting the process of wound healing negatively.</P>

        화장품 소재로서 가막살나무 추출물의 항염증 효능

        본 연구에서는 가막살나무(Viburnum dilatatum Thunb.)의 잎과 세지로부터 유래되는 천연화학성분들을 얻고, 이들의 자극완화용 화장품 소재로써의 가능성을 확인하기 위하여 항산화 효능 및 항염증 효능을 조사하였다. DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl)를 이용한 전자공여능 측정방법에 의한 항산화 효능 조사 결과, 가막살나무의 에탄올 (Ethanol) 추출물(SC<sub>50</sub> = 17.03 μg/mL), 에틸아세테이트(ethyl acetate) 분획물(SC<sub>50</sub> = 13.97 μg/mL), 부탄올(butanol) 분획물(SC<sub>50</sub> = 10.30 μg/mL) 순으로 항산화능력이 증가함을 알 수 있었다. 그러나 lipopolysaccharide (LPS)에 의해 활성화된 마우스 대식세포(RAW264.7 cells)에서 생성되는 산화질소(nitric oxide : NO) 생성의 억제능을 조사한 결과에서는 항산화 활성이 저조했던 헥산(hexane) 및 메틸렌클로라이드(methylene chloride) 분획물에서 10 μg/mL 시료농도를 기준으로 할 때, 50 % 이상의 NO 생성 억제율로 우수한 항염증 효능을 나타내었다. 특히, 위와 동일 실험 조건에서 헥산 분획물의 경우, 염증 반응 인자인 TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 등의 cytokine과 iNOS, COX-2 효소의 발현이 농도 의존적으로 억제됨을 RT-PCR 방법으로 확인할 수 있었다. 이번 연구 결과들로부터 가막살나무 유래 천연화학성분들은 자극완화용 화장품 소재 개발에 매우 유리하게 응용될 수 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. The crude ethanol extracts and their solvent-partitioned fractions derived from the leaf and twig of Viburnum dilatatum Thunb. were investigated for their 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging efficacy. The results showed that the butanol-soluble fraction (SC<sub>50</sub> = 10.30 μg/mL) exhibited higher anti-oxidant activity than the crude ethanol extract (SC<sub>50</sub> = 17.03 μg/mL) in the DPPH assay model. Then, the effects of the same extract samples on the production of nitric oxide were examined in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7 cells. Although the hexane and methylene chloride-soluble fraction showed a weak anti-oxidant activity, they exhibited potent inhibitory activity of NO production above 50 % at a concentration of 10 μg/mL. The hexane-soluble fraction also showed the inhibitory effect on mRNA expression of pro-inflammatory mediators such an TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, iNOS and COX-2 in LPS-stimulated RAW264.7. These results suggest that the solvent extracts of Viburnum dilatatum Thunb. could be used as an anti-irritation ingredient.

      • Synthesis design of Y<sub>3</sub>Al<sub>5</sub>O<sub>12</sub>: Ce<sup>3+</sup> phosphor for fabrication of ceramic converter in automotive application

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A cellulose-assisted, liquid-phase precursor (LPP) was used to synthesize a YAG phosphor radiating near 530 nm with a particle size of 400 nm, which may be implemented in many applications. The mixture of the materials was homogeneous, and the cellulose-assisted LPP method involved a liquid-phase reaction at a lower temperature compared to a solid-state reaction (SSR). The reaction was performed at 1200, 1300 and 1400 °C, and the composition ratio of the samples was controlled based on yttrium (L1: 2.7, L2: 2.8, L3: 2.9, L4: 2.95, and L5: 3.1 M). ∼400 nm particles were obtained at 1200 °C and ∼1 μm at 1300 °C. At 1200 °C, the PL intensity was the highest in the Y<SUB>3.1</SUB>Al<SUB>5</SUB>O<SUB>12</SUB> sample. At 1300 and 1400 °C, the strongest intensity was evident in the Y<SUB>2.9</SUB>Al<SUB>5</SUB>O<SUB>12</SUB> sample.         <P>IL-32 acts as a pro-inflammatory cytokine by inducing the synthesis of inflammatory molecules as well as promoting the morphological changes involved in the transformation of monocytes into osteoclasts (OCs). Evaluation of the functions of IL-32 has mainly focused on its inflammatory properties, such as involvement in the pathogenesis of various autoimmune diseases. Recently, IL-32 was shown to be involved in bone metabolism, in which it promotes the differentiation and activation of OCs and plays a key role in bone resorption in inflammatory conditions. IL-32γ also regulates bone formation in conditions such as ankylosing spondylitis and osteoporosis. In this review, we summarize the results of recent studies on the role of IL-32γ in bone metabolism in inflammatory arthritis.</P>

        중학교 과학 학습 자료에서 삽화 제시 유형에 따른 학습 효과: ‘소화와 순환’ 관련 학습 자료를 중심으로

        This study investigates the effects of the different types of illustrations that are used in the Learning Materials for the unit ‘Digestion and Circulation’ in middle school science. Two topics in the unit, the ‘Inner Structure of the Small Intestine’ for digestion and the topic of ‘Oxygen-Carrying’ for circulation were examined to develop learning materials for adopting different spatial placements of illustrations and texts, for example the ‘Separation Type’ and the ‘Unity Type’. In the ‘Separation Type’ of learning materials, the texts and illustrations were separated and for the ‘Unity Type’ of learning materials, the texts were integrated into the illustrations. Two post-tests and one questionnaire after lessons were administrated to second grade students in middle school. The study found that students preferred the ‘Unity Type’ of materials. They reacted more positively to use the ‘Unity Type’ rather than the ‘Separation Type’. The post-tests confirmed that the ‘Unity-type’ of materials was more effective in student learning as well as the retention of content, as students who used the ‘Unity Type’ of learning materials achieved higher achievement scores in the first and second post-tests. The implication of the research findings are important as it shows that science teachers have to guide students to be able to connect the texts and illustrations. It is concluded that ‘Unity Type’ illustrations should be used for certain topics in science textbooks as well as learning materials. 본 연구는 중학교 과학 학습 자료에서 삽화의 제시 유형이 학생들의 학습에 미치는 효과를 알아보고, 효과적인 삽화 제시 방안을 모색하고자 하였다. 중학교 과학 교과서의 ‘소화와 순환’ 단원에서 ‘소장의 내부 구조’ 와 ‘산소 운반’을 주제로 선정하였고, 공간적 배치에 따라 본문이 삽화와 분리되어 있는 ‘분리형’과 본문이 삽화 내부에 통합되어 있는 ‘통합형’으로 구분하여 자료를 개발하였다. 중학교 2학년 학생을 대상으로 적용한 결과, ‘통합형’이 ‘분리형’에 비해 1차와 2차 학업성취도에서 효과적인 것은 공통적이지만, 주제별 삽화와 내용의 방향성에 따라 학습 효과의 차이가 있었는데, 방향성이 있는 경우 학습 효과가 높게 나타났다. 그리고 학습자가 흥미, 이해, 학습 방법 영역에서 ‘분리형’보다 ‘통합형’에 대하여 더 긍정적으로 인식하였고, ‘통합형’을 더 선호하였다. 이러한 결과를 볼 때 과학 교과서와 학습 자료에서 주제에 따라 적합하게 ‘통합형’을 제시하고, 교사는 학생들이 본문과 삽화를 연결시킬 수 있도록 지도할 필요가 있다고 생각한다.

        Osteosarcopenia in Patients with Hip Fracture Is Related with High Mortality

        <P><B>Background</B></P><P>This study evaluated the prevalence of osteosarcopenia, as well as the relationship between one-year mortality and osteosarcopenia, as defined by criteria of the Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia in patients age 60 or older with hip fracture.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>A total of 324 patients age 60 years or older with hip fracture were enrolled in this retrospective observational study. The main outcome measure was the prevalence of osteosarcopenia, as well as the relationship between osteosarcopenia and 1-year mortality. The diagnosis of sarcopenia was carried out according to the Asian Working Group on Sarcopenia. Whole body densitometry analysis was used for skeletal muscle mass measurement and muscle strength were evaluated by handgrip testing. Mortality was assessed at the end of 1-year. Cox regression analysis was utilized to analyze the risk factor of osteosarcopenia.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>Of 324 patients with hip fracture, 93 (28.7%) were diagnosed with osteosarcopenia. In total, 9.0% died during the one-year follow-up. A one-year mortality of osteosarcopenia (15.1%) was higher than that of other groups (normal: 7.8%, osteoporosis only: 5.1%, sarcopenia only: 10.3%). Osteosarcopenia had a 1.8 times higher mortality rate than non-osteosarcopenia.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>The present study demonstrates that the prevalence of osteosarcopenia is not rare, and has a higher mortality rate than the non-osteosarcopenia group at the 1-year follow-up period. This is the first study evaluating the relationship between mortality and osteosarcopenia in patients with hip fracture.</P>
