Roles of ErbB3-binding protein 1 (EBP1) in embryonic development and gene-silencing control

<P><B>Significance</B></P><P><I>Ebp1</I> deletion causes developmental defects with massive cell death and cessation of cell proliferation through dysregulation of epigenetic gene silencing unit, a Suv39H1/DNMT1 axis. Our study indicates that EBP1 regulates global gene expression via at least 2 mechnaisms. First, EBP1 acts as a transcriptional repressor for DNMT1 gene expression, allowing the escape of the repressive chromatin state. Second, EBP1 binds to the promoter region of the target gene inhibiting the association of DNMT1 with the downstream gene such as <I>Survivin</I>, regulating gene expression. Hence, these findings provide a molecular mechanism of how EBP1 functions in cell survival and transcriptional regulation by modulating epigenetic regulators during development.</P><P>ErbB3-binding protein 1 (EBP1) is implicated in diverse cellular functions, including apoptosis, cell proliferation, and differentiation. Here, by generating genetic inactivation of <I>Ebp1</I> mice, we identified the physiological roles of EBP1 in vivo. Loss of <I>Ebp1</I> in mice caused aberrant organogenesis, including brain malformation, and death between E13.5 and 15.5 owing to severe hemorrhages, with massive apoptosis and cessation of cell proliferation. Specific ablation of Ebp1 in neurons caused structural abnormalities of brain with neuron loss in [Nestin-Cre; <I>Ebp1</I><SUP><I>flox/flox</I></SUP>] mice. Notably, global methylation increased with high levels of the gene-silencing unit Suv39H1/DNMT1 in <I>Ebp1</I>-deficient mice. EBP1 repressed the transcription of <I>Dnmt1</I> by binding to its promoter region and interrupted DNMT1-mediated methylation at its target gene, <I>Survivin</I> promoter region. Reinstatement of EBP1 into embryo brain relived gene repression and rescued neuron death. Our findings uncover an essential role for EBP1 in embryonic development and implicate its function in transcriptional regulation.</P>

현대 아프리카 패션 디자이너의 작품 특성에 관한 연구 -테베 마구구, 케네스 이제이, 웨카포레 지브릴을 중심으로-

본 연구는 아프리카 디자이너들의 활동이 패션계의 전례 없는 주목을 받고 있다는 흥미로운 현실에서 출발했다. 본 연구는 현세대의 아프리카 패션을 대표하는 세 명의 디자이너, 테베 마구구, 케네스 이제이, 웨카포레 지브릴이 전개하는 브랜드의 정신 그리고 디자인 표현 특성을 살피고 동시에 이것이 시사하는 바를 밝히는 데 목적을 두었다. 연구 대상은 아프리카에 뿌리를 두고 활동하면서 국제적으로 저명한 패션 어워드에서 수상하거나 글로벌 매거진에 조명 받는 브랜드로 설정했다. 이후, 그들의 브랜드 컬렉션, 룩북, 인터뷰, 컬렉션 리뷰 및 보도 자료를 수집하여 면밀히 분석하였다. 연구 결과, 그들은 아프리카인으로서 사명과 자부심이 자신의 브랜드의 정체성 형성과 작품의 공통적인 뼈대를 이루었으며, 과거 아프리카에 대한 서구의 착취가 만들어낸 흑인다움과는 다른 시선으로 컬렉션을 전개하는 것을 알 수 있었다. 마구구는 남아프리카 공화국의 전통과 정신을 기반으로 한 여성복을 시작했으며, 동시대 남아프리카를 대변하기 위한 사명감을 표출하였다. 나이지리아의 전통 계승을 기반으로 한 디자인을 선보이고 있는 이제이 역시 지역 정신과 산업의 발전적 도모에 깊은 책임감을 느끼고 있음을 표했다. 지브릴의 경우, 서아프리카의 향수와 정신을 자신의 브랜드 미학으로 삼고 있었으며, 그들의 디자인 표현 특성은 서양 중심의 에스닉 디자인 표현의 탈피, 정체성의 주체적 코드화, 흑인 모델구성을 통한 강한 주체 의식 표출 등의 세 가지 양상으로 분류할 수 있었다. 현대 아프리카 디자이너들의 부상은 서구중심주의 관점으로 해석되던 아프리카에 대한 의식의 재고를 요한다. 아프리카 패션미학이 제3세계 디자인을 넘어 문화와 미학의 주체로 부상하고 있다. 이들이 보여주는 아프리카에 대한 미학적 표현은 향후 패션계에 더욱 큰 반향을 일으킬 것이라 예상한다. Numerous activities of African designers have been receiving unprecedented attention in the fashion world, and this has triggered me to engage in this study. This study intends to examine how the three designers, Thebe Magugu, Kenneth Ize, and Wekafore Jibril, who represent the current generation of African fashion, express their brand identity as well as to observe the characteristics of their designs and how they are expressed, along with their implications in today’s fashion. Several designers, who have won internationally renowned fashion awards or are highlighted in global magazines, with brands rooted in Africa, were selected as the subjects. Afterward, their brand collections, look books, interviews, collection reviews, and press releases were collected and analyzed closely. This research has revealed that their mission and pride as Africans have played a role in creating their brand identity, and the development of their collections has been independent of the conventional African perspective unfairly enforced by the Western exploitation of Africa in the past. Thebe Magugu first started women's wear based on the tradition and spirit of South Africa and has been expressing a sense of commitment to represent his country. Ize, who is presenting designs based on the legacy of Nigeria, also has been expressing a deep sense of responsibility for the development of the community spirit and industry of his nation. Wekafore, in addition, has incorporated West African nostalgia and spirit into his brand aesthetic, and his design characteristics reflect the following aspects: breaking away from the Western-centered ethnic design, and a strong sense of identity through featuring black models. The rise of contemporary African designers calls for a reconsideration of how Africa should be viewed since the country has been evaluated from a western-centric viewpoint. The aesthetics of African fashion is emerging as a subject of culture and aesthetics that goes beyond the design concept present in third world countries. It is expected that their aesthetic expressions of Africa will have a great resonance with the fashion world in the near future.

Increased Tolerance to Furfural by Introduction of Polyhydroxybutyrate Synthetic Genes to Escherichia coli

Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), the most well-known polyhydroxyalkanoate, is a bio-based, biodegradable polymer that has the potential to replace petroleum-based plastics. Lignocellulose hydrolysate, a non-edible resource, is a promising substrate for the sustainable, fermentative production of PHB. However, its application is limited by the generation of inhibitors during the pretreatment processes. In this study, we investigated the feasibility of PHB production in E. coli in the presence of inhibitors found in lignocellulose hydrolysates. Our results show that the introduction of PHB synthetic genes (bktB, phaB, and phaC from Ralstonia eutropha H16) improved cell growth in the presence of the inhibitors such as furfural, 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, and vanillin, suggesting that PHB synthetic genes confer resistance to these inhibitors. In addition, increased PHB production was observed in the presence of furfural as opposed to the absence of furfural, suggesting that this compound could be used to stimulate PHB production. Our findings indicate that PHB production using lignocellulose hydrolysates in recombinant E. coli could be an innovative strategy for cost-effective PHB production, and PHB could be a good target product from lignocellulose hydrolysates, especially glucose.

This study examines post-listing control systems for pharmaceutical pricing and suggests a reasonable improvement policy in Korea. There are four post-listing control systems for pharmaceutical pricing in Korean national health insurance. When each scheme was introduced, they had their own background and goals. But it is very difficult to understand and predict the timing and extent of the price cuts due to complex system by introducing or revising some schemes without clear policy objectives. At the same time, the social costs are often caused by various confusions, including distribution sites, due to frequent price cuts. For this reason, the current post-listing control system needs to be improved. We investigated the latest trends of the post-listing control system of the major countries that operate a similar system through literatures, website, reports of relevant institutions. From a mid- to long-term point of view, the system should be that can enhance the health of the population by comprehensively reflecting drug prescribing behavior and use status under clear target for drug expenditure management. It should also be developed as a system that can create a healthy industrial ecosystem for the development of the pharmaceutical industry.

뎀나 바잘리아의 아방가르드 정신에 내재한 패션의 의미

본 연구는 뎀나 바잘리아의 시각적 결과물에 의존한 외적인 분석을 넘어 아방가르드 예술 운동과 정신에 부합하는 개념에 근거한 학자들의 이론적 고찰에 초점을 맞추어 디자이너와 그의 작품을 분석하는 관점을 취했다. 21세기 가장 강력한 패션 아이콘이자 시대정신을 내포한 인물로 부상한 바잘리아에 대한 평가와 분석은 단시간 내 범람했다. 현재까지 이루어진 그와 관련된 연구들은 그의 시각적 결과물에 초점을 맞추거나 마틴 마르지엘라의 산물이라는 평가 또는 그가 추구하는 해체주의 면모와 유사한 분석이 주를 이루었다. 본 연구자는 바잘리아의 인터뷰와 그가 표현하는 패션 전반의 활동을 통해 20세기 가장 중요한 예술운동 중 하나인 아방가르드 예술을 설명하는 개념에 상응하는 것을 발견하였다. 본 연구는 역사적 아방가르드 정신의 개념적 접근과 근본적 고찰을 시도했고, 이를 근거로 룩북, 캠페인 등을 통해 발현되는 아방가르드 정신을 관찰하였다. 아방가르드 예술 운동의 근본적인 정신을 전제로 바잘리아의 패션을 관찰한 결과, 바잘리아는 패션에 굳어진 시스템을 변화시키기 위한 저항정신을 토대로 반미학적, 반부르주아적 가치관에 부합하는 이념을 지닌다. 패션의 일상성을 강조하며 삶과 유리된 예술의 무의미성을 강조했던 아방가르드 예술가들의 특징에 상응하는 면모를 보이며, 동시대를 살아가고 있는 디자이너로서의 시대적 사명감을 토대로 자신의 패션디자인에 사회적, 정치적 관심을 반영하며 사회를 긍정적인 방향으로 전환하고자 했던 아방가르드 예술가들과 유사한 수행자의 면모 또한 드러내고 있다. 바잘리아는 인터뷰를 포함한 패션 행위를 수단으로 자신의 정치적 편향성을 표출하는 동시에 사회적 가치의 실천적 수행자로서 자신의 의견을 전달하고 있다. 이는 자신의 세계관과 이념을 공격적이고 공공연하게 선언함으로 활동을 시작한 아방가르드주의자들과 유사한 특징을 보이는 것으로 귀결됐다. 바잘리아는 자신의 패션에 저항적, 정치적, 휴머니즘적인 사회적 가치의 관점을 표출하고 이를 실행하는 실천적 자세를 취한다. 본 연구를 통해 문화예술의 용어로부터 기인한 아방가르드의 개념을 되짚고 패션에 대한 연구 관점을 사회학 그리고 미학적 접근에 기여한 논제를 시사하고자 하는 데에 연구 의의가 있다. This study analyzes designers and their works by focusing on the theoretical contemplation by scholars based on concepts consistent with the avant-garde movement and spirit, beyond the external analysis relying on the visual achievements of Demna Gvasalia. Assessments and analyses poured out in a short time, as he emerged as the most powerful fashion icon of the 21^st century and a person who reflects the spirit of the age. Until now the studies regarding him focused on his visual achievements or evaluated him as the product of Martin Margiela, assessing him based on the aspect of deconstructivism. In regard with Gvasalia’s interviews and his overall fashion activities, this study identifies that Gvasalia corresponds to the concept that explains the avant-garde movement which is one of the most important art movements of the 20^th century. This study attempts a conceptual approach and fundamental consideration of the historical avant-garde spirit, while observing the avant-garde spirit expressed through showcases, lookbooks, and campaigns. As a result of observing Gvasalia’s fashion on the premise of the fundamental spirit of the avant-garde movement, Gvasalia expresses an ideology that conforms to anti-aesthetic and anti-bourgeois values based on the spirit of resistance to change the system that was solidified in fashion. He displays the characteristics of avant-garde artists who emphasized the everydayness of fashion and the insignificance of art isolated from life, and also shows disciplinant characteristics of avant-garde artists in reflecting social and political interests in his fashion with the intend to make society better based on the sense of duty as a contemporary artist. Gvasalia expresses his political bias by means of fashion, including interviews, and at the same time expresses his opinion as a practical performer for social values. This results in an aggressive and open declaration of his view of the world similar to that of the avant-garde artists. Gvasalia expresses the perspective of defiant, political, and humanistic social values in his fashion and takes a practical attitude to implement them. The academic significance of this study is to reflect on the concept of avant-garde derived from the terminology of culture and arts, and to suggest a thesis that contributes to sociological and aesthetic approaches on fashion.

젠더 프리 시대와 밀레니얼 핑크 : 젠더 프리 시대 속 변화된 핑크의 활용을 통해 본 상징적 의미 고찰

성의 구분에 따른 핑크 활용의 논란으로부터 출발한 본 연구는 현재적 시점에서 변하고 있는 분홍색의 활용 사례를 정리함으로써 핑크 활용의 변화와 오늘날 밀레니얼 핑크로 총칭되는 변화된 분홍색의 상징적 의미가 무엇인지 규명하는 데에 목적을 두었다. 우선 젠더 프리 시대와 밀레니얼 핑크라는 이슈에 대한 기본 개념과 방향을 수립하였고, 이를 근거로 논의 현황 등을 살펴보며 연구사례 분석의 틀을 마련하였다. 연구대상으로 분홍색의 활용에 대한 평가와 논란이 포함된 기사를 수집하여 구체적인 항목 분류와 함께 이를 둘러싼 논쟁 또한 조사 분석하며 문제점을 인식했다. 연구 범위는 사회, 예술 및 디자인, 미디어 분야로 분류하여 핑크색 활용을 살펴보았다. 분홍색의 활용은 성 평등과 다양성에 대한 이슈의 부상과 함께 동시에 이를 표현하는 수단적 색상으로 자리 잡고 있었는데, 연구 결과 역사의 흐름 속에서 핑크색은 유독 다른 색채와 달리 젠더 관점에서 사회화 양상이 두드러졌으며, 그 상징적 기능은 단순히 지시적 색채를 넘어 사회와 소통하는 면모를 보이고 있었다. 젠더 프리 시대에 영향을 받은 핑크는 밀레니얼 핑크라고 불린다. 밀레니얼 핑크의 상징적 의미가 갖는 대표적 경향은 사회적 클리셰 탈피, 여성적 힘의 대두 그리고 색상 본연의 상징적 기호의 확장 등으로 보인다. 색채는 인간의 의식과 심리 그리고 무의식에 밀접한 관련이 있다. 인간의 기호로서 색채는 이미지화되며 다양한 연상 작용을 일으킨다. 색이 주는 효과는 사회 문화적 방향과 힘을 제시한다. 이러한 맥락과 함께 밀레니얼 제트 세대의 중요한 가치인 ‘젠더 이슈’는 성의 이원론을 가장 뚜렷하게 보여주는 핑크색을 통해 드러나기 시작했다. 젠더 프리 시대를 맞이한 현재, 색채에 부여된 성 고정관념은 지속해서 시대를 반영하는 이슈를 생산하며 젠더 이슈에 대한 담론의 대상이 될 것으로 보인다. The increase in sensitivity to gender issues, a recent social phenomenon, has become one of the heated debates in modern society. As Millennials, in particular, have emerged as the generation who now shapes the society’s economy, the concept of gender equality, one of the values that they emphasize, has become closely tied to the problem of gender role that has been occurring in various fields. Such problems have been clearly taking place through the color pink, which was an evident marker of gender in the past. In such a manner, the association with pink, which is highly related to gender issues, has long been a source of controversy. This study, therefore, first intends to examine the use of pink and its historical formation process that produced symbolic meaning and aims to analyze the constant shift in social perception of pink with the stream of time. In order to examine how the pink color has been used over time, this paper investigated its social, fashion, art, and media categories. Based on the above observation, this study explored the symbolic meaning of pink in the current society in which the gender-neutral values are becoming prominent through analyzing the association of pink in the contemporary society that opposes the traditional characteristics of pink and demands less stereotypical gender values. Such examination especially demonstrated the color-coded gender socialization of pink. In addition, the symbolic function of pink went beyond merely showing its referential function and penetrated deep into social beliefs. The diversified symbols of pink, based on this research, are not simply an attempt to break free or transform the female oppressive tone embedded in pink; the main purpose of these symbols is not to generate a one-sided choice of words that favors a specific gender as well. Rather, it can be concluded that it indicates efforts to focus on the types of moods that pink naturally tends to evoke or extend its symbolic function that adheres to restrictive gender norms.

페트라 콜린스의 이미지와 여성주의

밀레니얼 제트 세대 출신으로, 서구의 제4세대 페미니즘을 주도하는 여성주의 포토그래퍼 페트라 콜린스가 주목받는 것은 그녀의 여성에 대한 주체적 시선을 담은 사진 아카이빙 때문이다. 이 연구는 그녀의 사진 작품에 내재한 여성 서사에 대한 근본적인 이해를 찾는 것에 목적을 둔다. 본 논문은 여성주의 관점으로 페트라 콜린스의 시각 작업을 조사하기 위해 여성주의와 이미지에 관한 서술의 기본 개념과 관점을 설립하고, 콜린스의 이미지와 서술에 대한 분석의 배경이 되는 작품들을 수집한다. 주요 연구 대상은 콜린스가 ‘여성’을 주제로, 다수의 여성 작가들과 이끄는 온라인 아트 갤러리와 그녀의 공식 홈페이지 그리고 3권의 사진집을 중심으로 자료를 분석한다. 이 연구는 여성주의 이미지를 토대로 전달하는 이미지의 특성을 찾고 그것이 가지는 의의를 관찰한다. 여성주의 관점으로 페트라 콜린스의 이미지 특성을 분석한 결과, 자신의 여성주의 성향을 표현하는 데 있어, 이미지를 구성하는 언어들로 연결한다. 그 특징적 요소는 주체적 시선과 수평적 구도, 핑크 색상 및 파스텔 색조의 활용, 패션과 몸을 오브제로 활용이다. 이 같은 사진 언어를 취하는 콜린스가 전개하는 이미지의 의의는 여성 주제적 사고와 실재적 시선, 능동적 섹슈얼리티와 오토에로티시즘 그리고 소녀성의 수용과 같은 세 가지 범주에서 정의될 수 있다. 타자에 의해 규정되고 대상화된 여성에 대한 시선이 범지구적인 논제로 부상하고 있는 시점에서, 페트라 콜린스가 생산하는 이미지는 그 자체로 이 시대의 여성주의를 반영한다. 서구권에서 제4세대 페미니즘을 대표할 작가로 주목받고 있는 콜린스의 작업은 지속적으로 동시대적 여성주의 방향을 설립하는 데 영향을 미칠 것이라 기대한다. In order to examine the visual work of Petra Collins through a feminist perspective, the following study establishes the fundamental notions and perspectives of both feminist and visual narratives, and gathers different works to analyze Collins’s visual narrative. The main objects of study are the online art gallery, run by Collins and many other women photographers on the subject of ‘women’, her official web site and three photo books. The following research explores the visual characteristics of her feminist imagery and studies their significations. Through a feminist perspective, the analysis of Petra Collins’s visual characteristics illustrates how her feminist inclination is incorporated in the construction of her visual language. The characteristic elements include subjective viewpoints, horizontal composition, usage of pink and pastel tones, as well as usage of fashion and bodies as objects. Through these kinds of visual elements, the significations attributed by Collins can be found within the following three categories: women’s subjectivity and actual perception, active sexuality and auto eroticism, and affirmation of girlishness. Today’s feminism is reflected in the images generated by Petra Collins, especially in aperiod where the perceptions on women, that have been defined and objectified by others, are emerging as a global issue. She is becoming known as a major artist who is expected to represent fourth-wave feminism in the Western world, with a lasting influence in the establishment of contemporary feminism.

Merchant 검사 시 슬개대퇴관절 겹침 최소화를 위한 중심 X선 입사각에 대한 평가

This study aimed to found out the effect of patellofemoral overlap distance by changing femur thickness and center X-ray angles in Merchant method images. Based on the femur thickness, it suggested tube angle minimizes overlap. It was conducted by Merchant method, a knee tangential view, and the image was obtained by changing the thigh thickness from 14 to 20 ㎝ and the center ray angle from 60°, 57°, 55°. The images were measured by five researchers using a method of measuring the overlap, which was designed by them. The results showed at 60°, 57°, 55° angle, the patellofemoral overlap distance resulted in 0.47±0.66 to 20.89±0.65 ㎝, 2.26±0.28 to 15.73±0.62 ㎝, 1.39 ± 0.83 to 12.49 ± 0.37 ㎝. However, for 57° and 55°, no overlap in thickness under 14.5 and 14 to 15.5 didn t appear. it showed high correlation between femur thickness and overlap. The difference in the mean value of overlap in each group showed a statistically significant difference (p<0.01), all were classified as independent groups in the post-hoc test. In all images, the patellofemoral overlap distance increased as the thickness increased, and at the average thickness of Korean men and women, overlap decreased when reducing center ray. When conducting Merchant tests on Koreans, it was suggested it would be useful to use 57° angle because it minimize the effects of overlap and intrusions of tibia.
