Caveolae-mediated entry of Salmonella typhimurium into senescent nonphagocytotic host cells
Lim, Jae Sung,Choy, Hyon E,Park, Sang Chul,Han, Jung Min,Jang, Ik-Soon,Cho, Kyung A Blackwell Publishing Ltd 2010 AGING CELL Vol.9 No.2

Elderly individuals have an increased susceptibility to microbial infections because of age-related anatomical, physiological, and environmental factors. However, the mechanism of aging-dependent susceptibility to infection is not fully understood. Here, we found that caveolae-dependent endocytosis is elevated in senescent cells. Thus, we focused on the implications of caveolae-dependent endocytosis using Salmonella typhimurium, which causes a variety of diseases in humans and animals by invading the eukaryotic host cell. Salmonella invasion increased in nonphagocytotic senescent host cells in which caveolin-1 was also increased. When caveolae structures were disrupted by methyl-β-cyclodextrin or siRNA of caveolin-1 in the senescent cells, Salmonellae invasion was reduced markedly compared to that in nonsenescent cells. In contrast, the over-expression of caveolin-1 led to increased Salmonellae invasion in nonsenescent cells. Moreover, in aged mice, caveolin-1 was found to be highly expressed in Peyer’s patch and spleen, which are targets for infection by Salmonellae. These results suggest that high levels of caveolae and caveolin-1 in senescent host cells might be related to the increased susceptibility of elderly individuals to microbial infections.

The polycrystalline Ba3-xSrxCo2Fe24O41 (x = 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5) samples were synthesized by the solid-state reaction method. The crystalline structure of the samples was found to be a hexagonal structure with a space group of P6(3)/mmc. The lattice constants a(0), c(0), and V-u of the samples decrease with increasing Sr concentration. From the field-dependent hysteresis curves under 10 kOe at 295 K, the values of M-s increase while the values of H-c decrease. The zero-field-cooled magnetization curves under 100 O-e between 4.2 and 300 K show the spin transition, and the value of T-s decreases from 230 K for x = 0.0 to 135 K for x = 1.5 with increasing Sr concentration due to the reduction of planar anisotropy with the difference in ionic radius between Ba2+ and Sr2+ ions. From the isomer shift value (delta) obtained from Mossbauer spectra, the charge states of all samples are determined to be Fe3+ high spin state. With increasing Sr concentration, the reduction of hyperfine field < H-hf > suggests the change in hyperfine interaction between Fe ions because of the larger ionic radius of Ba2+ ion than that of Sr2+ ion, leading to decreasing M-s.

Lim, Seung-Mo,Shin, Mee-Ran,Kang, Kyung-Ho,Kang, Hyun,Nahm, Francis Sahn-Gun,Kim, Baek-Hui,Shin, Hwa-Yong,Lim, Young-Jin,Lee, Sang-Chul The Korean Pain Society 2012 The Korean Journal of Pain Vol.25 No.4
Background: Milnacipran is a balanced serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor with minimal side effects and broad safety margin. It acts primarily on the descending inhibitory pain pathway in brain and spinal cord. In many animal studies, intrathecal administration of milnacipran is effective in neuropathic pain management. However, there is no study for the neurological safety of milnacipran when it is administered neuraxially. This study examined the neurotoxicity of epidural milnacipran by observing behavioral and sensory-motor changes with histopathological examinations of spinal cords in rats. Methods: Sixty rats were divided into 3 groups, with each group receiving epidural administration of either 0.3 ml (3 mg) of milnacipran (group M, n = 20), 0.3 ml of 40% alcohol (group A, n = 20), or 0.3 ml of normal saline (group S, n = 20). Results: There were no abnormal changes in the behavioral, sensory-motor, or histopathological findings in all rats of groups M and S over a 3-week observation period, whereas all rats in group A had abnormal changes. Conclusions: Based on these findings, the direct epidural administration of milnacipran in rats did not present any evidence of neurotoxicity in behavioral, sensory-motor and histopathological evaluations.

The aim of this study was to examine the role of Programmed cell death 4 (Pdcd4) in colorectal adenocarcinoma (CRA). Pdcd4 expression was observed in both the nucleus and cytoplasm in colorectal adenocarcinoma, whereas Pdcd4 was expressed in the nucleus in normal colonic epithelial cells. Loss or weak expression of Pdcd4 was identified in 44 cases (40.7%) of cancer cells. Pdcd4 expression was associated with an increase in the nodal and clinical stage (p=0.022 and p=0.016, respectively). Nuclear staining was identified in 66 cases (61.15%), with no correlation with clinicopathological factors. Conversely, cytoplasmic staining for Pdcd4 was observed in 45 cases (41.7%), and increased according to nodal and clinical stage (p=0.011 and p=0.009, respectively), indicating that aberrant Pdcd4 expression leads to tumor progression. However, Pdcd4 expression was not correlated to disease-free survival time. This study demonstrated that during the tumorigenesis of CRA, loss of nuclear Pdcd4 expression occurs, and during tumor progression, aberrant cytoplasmic expression is present, suggesting a higher clinical stage. Although loss of Pdcd4 was not significantly correlated with survival time, as the prognosis of colorectal cancer varies depending on clinical stage including invasion depth, nodal status and metastatic status, cytoplasmic Pdcd4 expression may be a favorable prognostic marker in CRA.

Improvement on Current Limiting Characteristics of a Flux-Lock Type SFCL Using E-I Core

We investigated the current limiting characteristics of a flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using an E-I core. Unlike the flux-lock type SFCL using a two-legged common coil (C-C) core, two parallel connected coils and a high-TC superconducting (HTSC) element were placed on the left leg of a three-legged E-I core and an air gap was introduced into the central leg. Through the analyses for the fault current limiting experiments, the two parallel magnetic flux paths was confirmed to be contributed to the prevention of the magnetic saturation of the iron core and the improvement of the current limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL.

The present study was designed to determine the effect of barn or cycle of grazing on changes of biochemical metabolites in prepartum and changes of milk composition in postpartum of dairy cows. For this purpose, a total of sixteen 25 months old Holstein primiparous dairy cows were allocated in two groups (n=8) with an average body weight of 571.61 ± 35.30 kg (Barn) and 578.10 ± 39.20 kg (Grazing). The study was conducted from June 2018 to October 2018. Results revealed that barn raised dairy cows had a higher increase in their serum albumin and calcium level on day 14 prepartum. However, the level of palmitic acid, saturated fatty acid increased significantly, and the level of fat, oleic acid, γ-linoleic acid, arachidonic acid and unsaturated fatty acids decreased significantly in barn raised dairy cow's milk on day 14 postpartum. There were no significant differences observed with respect to all other biochemical metabolites, fatty acids and minerals between barn raised and cycle grazing dairy cows during prepartum and postpartum. Our study results could serve to a better understanding of barn raised cow with respect to changes of biochemical metabolites in prepartum and changes of milk composition, fatty acids and minerals content in grazing dairy cows in postpartum for estimating their physiological status.

Acromial fractures are well-documented complications subsequent to reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA), and most appear as stress frac-tures with no history of single trauma. To date, no study has reported the occurrence of acute displaced acromial fracture due to sudden strong deltoid contraction during heavy work. Displacement of the fracture results in a challenging surgery since it is difficult to obtain adequate fixation in thin and osteoporotic bones. We report a rare case of acute displaced acromial fracture after successful RSA treat-ment, using a novel technique of open reduction and internal fixation, applying two 4.5 mm cannulated screws and lateral clavicle pre-contoured plate.
Performance Analysis of DPSK Optical Communication for LEO-to-Ground Relay Link Via a GEO Satellite
Lim, Hyung-Chul,Park, Jong Uk,Choi, Mansoo,Choi, Chul-Sung,Choi, Jae-Dong,Kim, Jongah The Korean Space Science Society 2020 Journal of Astronomy and Space Sciences Vol.37 No.1
Satellite optical communication has gained significant attention owing to its many quality features (e.g., a larger bandwidth, license free spectrum, higher data rate, and better security) compared to satellite microwave communication. Various experiments have been performed during many space missions to demonstrate and characterize inter-satellite links, downlinks, and uplinks. Korea has also planned to establish an experimental communication system using a geostationary earth orbit (GEO) satellite and the Geochang station as an optical ground station for low Earth orbit (LEO)-to-ground optical relay links. In this study, the performance of inter-satellite communication links and downlinks was investigated for the new Korean experimental communication system in terms of link margin, bit error rate (BER), and channel capacity. In particular, the performance of the inter-satellite links was analyzed based on the receiving apertures and the transmitting power, while that of the downlink was analyzed in terms of atmospheric turbulence conditions and transmitting power. Finally, we discussed two system parameters of receiving aperture and transmitting power to meet the three criteria of link margin, BER, and channel capacity.
