The impacts of Harmonia axyridis cues on foraging behavior of Aphidius gifuensis to Myzus persicae

        Xia Peng-Liang,Yu Xing-Lin,Li Ze-Tao,Feng Yi 한국응용곤충학회 2021 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.24 No.1

This study investigated the effect of adult associated cues of the multicolored Asian ladybird Harmonia axyridis Pallas (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) on the foraging behavior of the aphid parasitoid, Aphidius gifuensis Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Aphididae) with three assays: 1) whole aphid leaf-disc with H. axyridis tracks; 2) aphid leaf-disc with only half contaminated with H. axyridis tracks; 3) aphid leaf-discs without H. axyridis tracks. Foraging behavior of A. gifuensis was recorded using the Observer® XT 11 and EthoVsion® XT 12. In addition, functional responses of A. gifuensis in patches with or without H. axyridis cues were also tested. Aphidius gifuensis females preferred oviposition in arenas where no adult tracks of H. axyridis were present. However, no significant dif ference between functional responses of A. gifuensis foraging in plants with and without H. axyridis cues was detected. Our study suggests that H. axyridis associated cues could influence the foraging behavior and activity of A. gifuensis under laboratory conditions. On the other hand, the foraging efficiency of A. gifuensis was not significantly affected by H. axyridis walking tracks in a single plant system. Aphidius gifuensis might exhibit flexible behavioral responses to predator associated cues. The risk of intraguild interactions and the possibility of mitigating such risks for parasitoids are important components for ultimately determining the compatibility of biological control agents.

Effect of temperature on survival and immature development of Arma chinensis

        Xia Peng-Liang,Wang Bo,Xie Xiao-Fei,Feng Yi,Huang Yong 한국응용곤충학회 2022 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.25 No.3

Arma chinensis (Fallou) is a predaceous pentatomid with the potential to control a wide range of insect pests. In this study, the stage-specific temperature-dependent development and survival of A. chinensis was investigated under seven constant temperatures (range 18–35 ◦ C) when fed with yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor L.). Developmental times (in days) for the immature stage, entire nymphal stage, and egg-to-adult development were inversely proportional to temperatures between 18 and 33 ◦ C (30 ◦ C for eggs and 1st instar nymphs). The lowest survival rate of A. chinensis was observed at 18 ◦ C (6.7%), whereas it was the highest (80–93.3%) at temperatures ranging from 21 to 24 ◦ C. The low temperature thresholds for the egg, entire nymph stage, and egg-to-adult development were 14.3, 12.28, and 12.8 ◦ C, respectively, while the thermal constants for these stages were estimated to be 85.47, 334.9, and 423.8 ◦ days. Among the three non-linear models examined, the Taylor model showed the best fit for the egg data, the Briére1 model was the best fit for the 1st instar nymph stage, and the Lactin1 model was more approprate for all the other instar stages, the entire nymphal stage, and overall development. The upper temperature thresholds estimated using the Lactin1 model for eggs, overall nymphal stage, and egg-to-adult development were 38.57, 38.9, and 40.0 ◦ C. The optimal temperature for the overall eggto-adult period was estimated to be 33.5 ◦ C. The results of this study can be used for the mass rearing of this natural pest enemy and development of phenology models of its seasonal progress.

Protective effect of liensinine on periodontitis through its antioxidant effect in mice

        Liang Pang,Kai Zhu,Xia Feng,Weiwei Liu,Deguang Peng,Lihua Qiu,Xiang Gao,Jiang Deng,Ying Li,Xin Zhao 한국응용생명화학회 2015 Applied Biological Chemistry (Appl Biol Chem) Vol.58 No.6

Liensinine is the most important functional compound in lotus seeds; its protective effect on periodontitis was determined and the mechanism of its antioxidant effect was also explained. During the experiment, we could observe that liensinine could reduce the gingival index in periodontitis-induced mice, and these effects were similar to that during the treatment of periodontitis with the metronidazole drug. After the treatment with liensinine, the serum Immunoglobulin G1 (IgG1) level was found to increase and IgG2a level was found to decrease compared to the periodontitis control mice. Liensinine and metronidazole could increase the superoxide dismutase (SOD) serum levels in the periodontitis-induced mice, and both the drugs at the same concentration (200 mg/kg) showed similar SOD activities, which was found to increase. Liensinine also increased the oxidationrelated factor of catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase, and decreased nitric oxide, malondialdehyde, and endothelin in the serum of mice, compared to the periodontitis control mice. The serum cytokine levels of Interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-a, and Interferon-c in liensinine-treated mice were lower than the control mice, but higher than the normal mice. The serum IL-4 cytokine level of liensinine-treated mice was reversed, i.e., higher than the control mice. In the periodontal tissue, the mRNA and protein expressions of inhibitor of kappa B-a, transforming growth factor beta 1, Interleukin-10, Mn-SOD, Gu/Zn-SOD, and CAT were increased by the treatment with liensinine compared to the control group mice, and nuclear factor kappa B expressions showed the opposite trend. Liensinine is a good functional compound in the treatment of periodontitis, similar to metronidazole drug. Higher concentration of liensinine had better effects.

      • Observation of the topological surface state in the nonsymmorphic topological insulator KHgSb

        Liang, A. J.,Jiang, J.,Wang, M. X.,Sun, Y.,Kumar, N.,Shekhar, C.,Chen, C.,Peng, H.,Wang, C. W.,Xu, X.,Yang, H. F.,Cui, S. T.,Hong, G. H.,Xia, Y.-Y.,Mo, S.-K.,Gao, Q.,Zhou, X. J.,Yang, L. X.,Felser, C. American Physical Society 2017 Physical review. B Vol.96 No.16

Topological insulators represent unusual topological quantum states, typically with gapped bulk band structure but gapless surface Dirac fermions protected by time-reversal symmetry. Recently, a distinct kind of topological insulator resulting from nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetry was proposed in the KHgX (X = As, Sb, Bi) compounds. Unlike regular topological crystalline insulators, the nonsymmorphic glide-reflection symmetry in KHgX guarantees the appearance of an exotic surface fermion with hourglass shape dispersion (where two pairs of branches switch their partners) residing on its (010) side surface, contrasting to the usual two-dimensional Dirac fermion form. Here, by using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we systematically investigate the electronic structures of KHgSb on both (001) and (010) surfaces and reveal the unique in-gap surface states on the (010) surface with delicate dispersion consistent with the 'hourglass Fermion' recently proposed. Our experiment strongly supports that KHgSb is a nonsymmorphic topological crystalline insulator with hourglass fermions, which serves as an important step to the discovery of unique topological quantum materials and exotic fermions protected by nonsymmorphic crystalline symmetry.

Constructing all-in-one graphene-based supercapacitors for electrochemical energy storage via interface integration strategy

        Zhu Yucan,Peng Long,Chen Song,Feng Yuchao,Xia Jianxing,Wang Wei,Chen Liang,Yin Hong,Zhou Minjie,Hou Zhaohui 한국탄소학회 2023 Carbon Letters Vol.33 No.3

With the rapid development of flexible wearable electronic products, flexible all graphene-based supercapacitors (FGSCs) with reduced graphene oxide rGO//graphene oxide (GO)//rGO structure have attracted substantial attention due to their unique structures and energy storage mechanism. However, restricted by design idea and preparation technology, improvement of capacitance performance for the FGSCs is not obvious recently. Herein, we demonstrate that an interface integration strategy of constructing the high-performance FGSCs with compact structure. Hydroquinone (HQ)-modified rGO (HQ-rGO) films (electrode materials) and sulfuric acid-intercalated GO films (electrolyte/separator) are assembled into the FGSCs utilizing hydrogen bonding and capillary contractility. The HQ further improves the electrochemical capacitance of electrode materials. The synergistic effect of the hydrogen bonding and capillary contractility guarantees compact and stable structure of the device. The resulting FGSCs exhibit an excellent areal capacitance of 804.6 mF cm−2 (@2 mA cm−2) and 441 mF cm−2 (@30 mA cm−2), and their highest energy and power densities can achieve 109.5 μWh cm−2 and 21,060 μW cm−2, respectively. These performances are superior to other all-in-one graphene-based SCs reported. Therefore, the construction technology of the FGSCs is a promising for developing all graphene-based SCs with high-performance.

Stability analysis of homogeneous slopes with benches

        Zhao, Lianheng,Xia, Peng,Xie, Rongfu,Li, Liang,Zhang, Yingbin,Cheng, Xiao Techno-Press 2017 Geomechanics & engineering Vol.13 No.3

In this paper, with a graphical approach, a series of stability charts for homogeneous slopes with benches are presented based on the upper bound limit analysis theory and strength reduction technique. The objective function of the slope safety factor $F_s$ is optimized by the nonlinear sequential quadratic programming, and a substantial number of examples are illustrated to use the stability charts for homogeneous slopes with benches driven by only the action of the soil weight. These charts can be applied to quick and accurate estimations of the stability status of homogeneous slopes with benches. Moreover, the failure modes and the formula for safety factor Fs of homogeneous slopes with benches are provided to illustrate the stability analysis of slopes with benches, which is validated by samples.
