Killed oral cholera vaccines (OCV) are not recommended for pregnant women though there is no evidence of harmful effects during pregnancy. We evaluated the effect of a killed OCV, Shanchol™, on pregnancy outcomes during an effectiveness trial of the vaccine in urban Bangladesh.</P><P><B>Methodology</B></P><P>Individuals ⩾1 year were invited to participate in the trial, conducted in 2011 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Pregnancy by history was an exclusion criterion and all women of reproductive age (15–49 years) were verbally questioned about pregnancy at enrollment and prior to vaccination. Out of 48,414 women of reproductive age 286 women received the OCV unknowingly while pregnant. Out of these, we could recruit 69 women defined as exposed to OCV. Accordingly, we selected 69 pregnant women randomly from those who did not take the OCV (non-exposed to OCV). We evaluated adverse pregnancy outcome (spontaneous miscarriages, still births, or congenital malformations) between those who were exposed to OCV and those who were not exposed to OCV.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>About 16% of pregnant women exposed to OCV had pregnancy loss, as compared to 12% of unvaccinated pregnant women (P = 0.38). One congenital anomaly was observed and occurred in women non-exposed to OCV group. Models that adjusted for baseline characteristics that were unbalanced between the exposed and non-exposed groups, revealed a no elevation of risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes in vaccinees versus non-vaccinees (Adj. OR (95% CI): 0.45 (0.11–1.88).</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>No excess of adverse fetal outcomes associated with receipt of OCV was observed in this study.</P><P>Trial registration: Clinical Trials.gov number NCT01339845.</P></▼2>
Central nervous system depressant effect of hot water extract of Ocimum sanctum Linn. (Labiateae)

A battery of neuropharmacological experiments showed the hot water extract of Ocimum sanctum Linn. (Labiateae) had a depressant effect on the central nervous system (CNS), but the aqueous extract showed no effect on it. The hot water extract reduced the spontaneous locomotor activity, exploratory head dipping, propulsive locomotion and exploratory ambulation as well as prolonged the pentobarbital induced sleeping time. The depressant effect starts from 60 minutes after the drug administration and continued to 180 minutes. The drug may exert central depressant effect by interfering with the function of the cortex.

A well known Ayurvedic formulation Ashokarista, used for menstrual disorders has been studied in a single blind randomised placebo controlled clinical trial for the treatment of menorrhagia and dysmenorrhoea. Dysmenorrhoea and menorrhagia patients who were taking Ashokarista (20 ml twice daily) for 10 menstrual cycles had an increase in haemoglobin level. Menorrhagia treated group has shown to reduce the erythrocyte sedimentation rate level that has been increased in the menorrhagia control group. The platelet count, total count and differential count were observed unchanged in the study. The Ashokarista did not affect the SGPT and SGOT level, which signify its lack of toxicity in hepatic function. The treated menorrhagic patients showed an increase in serum albumin content and decrease in blood clotting time, whereas the serum protein content was observed unchanged. There was a significant increase in both serum cholesterol and triglyceride level, which usually associated with the use of oral contraceptives. No major side effects were observed by the clinicians during the study.
FIXED POINTS OF CONVERSE COMMUTING MAPPINGS USING AN IMPLICIT RELATION

In the present paper, we utilize the notion of converse commuting mappings due to L$\ddot{u}$ [On common fixed points for converse commuting self-maps on a metric spaces, Acta. Anal. Funct. Appl. 4(3) (2002), 226-228] and prove a common fixed point theorem in Menger space using an implicit relation. We also give an illustrative example to support our main result.

Non-evaporable getter (NEG) thin films of Ti-Al-Zr and Ti-Zr were prepared on stainless-steel substrate by using the cathodic arc deposition technique. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to analyze the getter behavior of the non-evaporable getter thin films. The SEM images displayed the porous and rough surfaces of the thin films, which is an indication of high adsorption and sticking probabilities for the residual gases present in the chamber. The volume elemental composition of the thin films was measured by using EDX. The XRD patterns of the synthesized thin films indicated that the films had an amorphous nature and high structural stability. The in-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies revealed that the superficial layers disappeared when the non-evaporable getter of Ti-Al-Zr thin films was heated at a temperature below 250~$^\circ$C for 30 minutes, there by activating the surface. However, for Ti-Zr thin films, no reasonable activation was observed at 250~$^\circ$C. This outcome reveals that thin films of Ti-Al-Zr are good for reducing the outgassing and producing an ultra-high vacuum.
FIXED POINT THEOREMS IN MENGER SPACES USING AN IMPLICIT RELATION

In 2008, Al-Thaga and Shahzad [Generalized I-nonexpansive selfmaps and invariant approximations, Acta Math. Sinica, 24(5) (2008), 867-876] introduced the notion of occasionally weakly compatible mappings in metric spaces. In this paper, we prove some common fixed point theorems for families of occasionally weakly compatible mappings in Menger spaces using an implicit relation. We also give an illustrative example to support our main result.

Picrorhiza kurrooa Royle. is a well known medicinal plant among the indigenous medical practitioners of India. Present study is the first time to report the activity on the central nervous system. Preliminary study of the hot water extract showed significant depressant activity on the hole board test as evidenced from the ambulation and head dipping scores. The extract showed better activity compared to diazepam on the duration of pentobarbital induced sleeping time.
