Abstract

Introduction

The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate and compare the outcome of endodontic micro-resurgery with that of primary endodontic microsurgery and determine prognostic factors affecting the outcome of micro-resurgery.

Methods

A clinical database was searched for endodontic microsurgery cases between 2001 and 2016. Nearest neighbor 2:1 propensity score matching for the following 5 variables was performed for cases of primary microsurgery and those of micro-resurgery: age, sex, tooth type, lesion type, and postoperative restoration. For the matched cases, the outcome was categorized as success or failure according to clinical and radiographic evaluations performed at least 1 year after surgery. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and log-rank tests were performed to compare the outcome of primary microsurgery with that of micro-resurgery over time. For the micro-resurgery group, multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was performed to identify prognostic factors and estimate their effects.

Results

In total, 571 cases of endodontic microsurgery (498 primary microsurgery and 73 micro-resurgery cases) were identified, and 146 cases of primary microsurgery were matched to 73 cases of micro-resurgery through 2:1 propensity score matching. After matching, all covariates demonstrated an absolute standardized difference of <0.1. The estimated 5-year success rates were 91.6% and 87.6% for primary microsurgery and micro-resurgery, respectively (P = .594). The tooth type was found to be the only contributing factor for the outcome of micro-resurgery, with molars showing a higher probability of failure than anterior teeth (hazard ratio, 8.53; P = .002).

Conclusions

Within the limitations, the findings of this study suggest that the outcome of endodontic micro-resurgery is comparable with that of primary endodontic microsurgery.

Intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) is a common precursor of pancreatic cancer (PC). Much clinical attention has been directed toward IPMNs due to the increase in the prevalence of PC. The diagnosis of IPMN depends primarily on a radiological examination, but the diagnostic accuracy of this tool is not satisfactory, necessitating the development of accurate diagnostic biomarkers for IPMN to prevent PC. Recently, high-throughput targeted proteomic quantification methods have accelerated the discovery of biomarkers, rendering them powerful platforms for the evolution of IPMN diagnostic biomarkers. In this study, a robust multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) pipeline was applied to discovery and verify IPMN biomarker candidates in a large cohort of plasma samples. Through highly reproducible MRM assays and a stringent statistical analysis, 11 proteins were selected as IPMN marker candidates with high confidence in 184 plasma samples, comprising a training (n = 84) and test set (n = 100). To improve the discriminatory power, we constructed a six-protein panel by combining marker candidates. The multimarker panel had high discriminatory power in distinguishing between IPMN and controls, including other benign diseases. Consequently, the diagnostic accuracy of IPMN can be improved dramatically with this novel plasma-based panel in combination with a radiological examination.

The O-ring seal is a essential component part in various mechanical apparatuses for the sealing. The contact force of O-rings is effected in environments of the O-ring seal, like that applied pressures, working temperatures and materials. Particularly the material of O-rings is a very important factor in severe condition such as high temperatures. But materials are properly selected because of the cost. So Bi-polymer O-rings that can satisfy both the mechanical characteristic and costs are proposed in this study. And the difference of the contact force of Bi-polymer O-rings and conventional O-rings with temperatures is found.

In this study, the design of a 3D foldable T-shaped dipole antenna inspired by origami and kirigami theory is presented. The origamiand kirigami-inspired techniques map 2D to 3D space. Moreover, the lamina emergent torsional (LET) joint is designed to fold the planar structure. The proposed antenna, including the LET joint, is printed on a planar 0.5 mm thick FR4 substrate. The proposed antenna is fed by a capacitively coupled microstrip line to achieve a 20 % fractional bandwidth (2.7~3.3 GHz), with a measured antenna gain value of 6.5 dBi.

Cytological examination of urine is the most widely used noninvasive pathologic screen for bladder urothelial carcinoma (BLCA); however, inadequate diagnostic accuracy remains a major challenge. We performed mass spectrometry-based proteomic analysis of urine samples of ten patients with BLCA and ten paired patients with benign urothelial lesion (BUL) to identify ancillary proteomic markers for use in liquid-based cytology (LBC). A total of 4,839 proteins were identified and 112 proteins were confirmed as expressed at significantly different levels between the two groups. We also performed an independent proteomic profiling of tumor tissue samples where we identified 7,916 proteins of which 758 were differentially expressed. Cross-platform comparisons of these data with comparative mRNA expression profiles from The Cancer Genome Atlas identified four putative candidate proteins, AHNAK, EPPK1, MYH14 and OLFM4. To determine their immunocytochemical expression levels in LBC, we examined protein expression data from The Human Protein Atlas and in-house FFPE samples. We further investigated the expression of the four candidate proteins in urine cytology samples from two independent validation cohorts. These analyses revealed AHNAK as a unique intracellular protein differing in immunohistochemical expression and subcellular localization between tumor and non-tumor cells. In conclusion, this study identified a new biomarker, AHNAK, applicable to discrimination between BLCA and BUL by LBC. To our knowledge, the present study provides the first identification of a clinical biomarker for LBC based on in-depth proteomics.
