      • Chromium(IV)–Peroxo Complex Formation and Its Nitric Oxide Dioxygenase Reactivity

        Yokoyama, Atsutoshi,Han, Jung Eun,Cho, Jaeheung,Kubo, Minoru,Ogura, Takashi,Siegler, Maxime A.,Karlin, Kenneth D.,Nam, Wonwoo American Chemical Society 2012 JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY - Vol.134 No.37

<P>The O2 and NO reactivity of a Cr(II) complex bearing a 12-membered tetraazamacrocyclic <I>N</I>-tetramethylated cyclam (TMC) ligand, [CrII(12-TMC)(Cl)]+ (<B>1</B>), and the NO reactivity of its peroxo derivative, [CrIV(12-TMC)(O2)(Cl)]+ (<B>2</B>), are described. By contrast to the previously reported Cr(III)–superoxo complex, [CrIII(14-TMC)(O2)(Cl)]+, the Cr(IV)–peroxo complex <B>2</B> is formed in the reaction of <B>1</B> and O2. Full spectroscopic and X-ray analysis revealed that <B>2</B> possesses side-on η2-peroxo ligation. The quantitative reaction of <B>2</B> with NO affords a reduction in Cr oxidation state, producing a Cr(III)–nitrato complex, [CrIII(12-TMC)(NO3)(Cl)]+ (<B>3</B>). The latter is suggested to form via a Cr(III)–peroxynitrite intermediate. [CrII(12-TMC)(NO)(Cl)]+ (<B>4</B>), a Cr(II)–nitrosyl complex derived from <B>1</B> and NO, could also be synthesized; however, it does not react with O2.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jacsat/2012/jacsat.2012.134.issue-37/ja307384e/production/images/medium/ja-2012-07384e_0007.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/ja307384e'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Cinnamon Intake Lowers Fasting Blood Glucose: Meta-Analysis

        Paul A. Davis,Wallace Yokoyama 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.9

Cinnamon, the dry bark and twig of Cinnamomum spp., is a rich botanical source of polyphenolics that has been used for centuries in Chinese medicine and has been shown to affect blood glucose and insulin signaling. Cinnamon's effects on blood glucose have been the subject of many clinical and animal studies; however, the issue of cinnamon intake's effect on fasting blood glucose (FBG) in people with type 2 diabetes and/or prediabetes still remains unclear. A meta-analysis of clinical studies of the effect of cinnamon intake on people with type 2 diabetes and/or prediabetes that included three new clinical trials along with five trials used in previous meta-analyses was done to assess cinnamon's effectiveness in lowering FBG. The eight clinical studies were identified using a literature search (Pub Med and Biosis through May 2010) of randomized, placebo-controlled trials reporting data on cinnamon and/or cinnamon extract and FBG. Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (Biostat Inc., Englewood, NJ, USA) was performed on the identified data for both cinnamon and cinnamon extract intake using a random-effects model that determined the standardized mean difference ([i.e., Change 1control – Change 2_(cinnamon)] divided by the pooled SD of the post scores). Cinnamon intake, either as whole cinnamon or as cinnamon extract, results in a statistically significant lowering in FBG (–0.49±0.2 mmol/L; n=8, P=.025) and intake of cinnamon extract only also lowered FBG (–0.48 mmol/L±0.17; n=5, P=.008). Thus cinnamon extract and/or cinnamon improves FBG in people with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes.

Application of operating vehicle load to structural health monitoring of bridges

A.K.M. Rafiquzzaman,Koichi Yokoyama 국제구조공학회 2006 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.2 No.3

For health monitoring purpose usually the structure is instrumented with a large scale and multi-channel measurement system. In case of highway bridges, operating vehicle could be utilized to reduce the number of measuring devices. First this paper presents a static damage detection algorithm of using operating vehicle load. The technique has been validated by finite element simulation and simple laboratory test. Next the paper presents an approach of using this technique to field application. Here operating vehicle load data has been used by instrumenting the bridge at single location. This approach gives an upper hand to other sophisticated global damage detection methods since it has the potential of reducing the measuring points and devices. It also avoids the application of artificial loading and interruption of any traffic flow.

Erythrolobus australicus sp. nov. (Porphyridiophyceae, Rhodophyta): a description based on several approaches

        양은찬,John A. West,Joe Scott,윤환수,Akiko Yokoyama,Ulf Karsten,Susan Loiseaux de Goër,Evguenia Orlova 한국조류학회I 2011 ALGAE Vol.26 No.2

The unicellular marine red alga Erythrolobus australicus sp. nov. (Porphyridiophyceae) was isolated into laboratory culture from mangroves in Queensland and New South Wales, Australia. The single multi-lobed red to rose-red plastid has more than one pyrenoid and lacks a peripheral thylakoid. Arrays of small electron dense globules occur along the thylakoids. The nucleus is peripheral with a central to eccentric nucleolus. Each Golgi body is associated with a mitochondrion. The spherical cells are positively phototactic with slow gliding movement. The psaA + psbA phylogeny clearly showed that E. australicus is a distinct species, which is closely related to E. coxiae. The chemotaxonomically relevant and most abundant low molecular weight carbohydrate in E. australicus is floridoside with concentrations between 209and 231 μmol g^(-1) dry weight. Traces of digeneaside were also detected. These various approaches help to understand the taxonomic diversity of unicellular red algae.

      • Extension of the operational regime of the LHD towards a deuterium experiment

        Takeiri, Y.,Morisaki, T.,Osakabe, M.,Yokoyama, M.,Sakakibara, S.,Takahashi, H.,Nakamura, Y.,Oishi, T.,Motojima, G.,Murakami, S.,Ito, K.,Ejiri, A.,Imagawa, S.,Inagaki, S.,Isobe, M.,Kubo, S.,Masamune, S IOP 2017 Nuclear fusion. Fusion nucléaire. &n.Illiga Vol.57 No.10

<P>As the finalization of a hydrogen experiment towards the deuterium phase, the exploration of the best performance of hydrogen plasma was intensively performed in the large helical device. High ion and electron temperatures, <I>T</I> i and <I>T</I> e, of more than 6 keV were simultaneously achieved by superimposing high-power electron cyclotron resonance heating onneutral beam injection (NBI) heated plasma. Although flattening of the ion temperature profile in the core region was observed during the discharges, one could avoid degradation by increasing the electron density. Another key parameter to present plasma performance is an averaged beta value <img ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='$\left\langle \beta \right\rangle $ ' SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/0029-5515/57/10/102023/nfaa7fc2ieqn001.gif'/>. The high <img ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='$\left\langle \beta \right\rangle $ ' SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/0029-5515/57/10/102023/nfaa7fc2ieqn002.gif'/> regime around 4% was extended to an order of magnitude lower than the earlier collisional regime. Impurity behaviour in hydrogen discharges with NBI heating was also classified with a wide range of edge plasma parameters. The existence of a no impurity accumulation regime, where the high performance plasma is maintained with high power heating  >10 MW, was identified. Wide parameter scan experiments suggest that the toroidal rotation and the turbulence are the candidates for expelling impurities from the core region.</P>

        박정수(Jung-Soo Park),신형섭(Hyung-Seop Shin),Y. Yokoyama,A. Inoue 대한기계학회 2007 대한기계학회 춘추학술대회 Vol.2007 No.10

In this study, using a devised friction welding apparatus which incorporates a pneumatic actuator and gripper to give a precise control of the friction time and pressure, the friction welding of Zr-based bulk metallic glasses (BMG) to crystalline metals has been tried. The shape and volume of the protrusion formed at the weld interface were investigated. As crystalline metals, Ti-alloys, Al-alloys and a Zr-metal were adopted. In order to characterize the friction welded interface, micrographic observation and X-ray diffraction analysis on the weld cross-section were carried out. A successful joining of the Zr-based bulk metallic glasses(BMG) to crystalline metals could be obtained certain pairs of materials combination used and through the precise control of friction conditions. The residual strength after welding bulk metallic glasses(BMG) to crystalline was evaluated by the four-point bending test and compared with the cases of friction welding to similar materials.

On the genus Rhodella, the emended orders Dixoniellales and Rhodellales with a new order Glaucosphaerales (Rhodellophyceae, Rhodophyta)

        Scott, Joe,Yang, Eun-Chan,West, John A.,Yokoyama, Akiko,Kim, Hee-Jeong,De Goer, Susan Loiseaux,O'Kelly, Charles J.,Orlova, Evguenia,Kim, Su-Yeon,Park, Jeong-Kwang,Yoon, Hwan-Su The Korean Society of Phycology 2011 ALGAE Vol.26 No.4

The marine unicellular red algal genus Rhodella was established in 1970 by L. V. Evans with a single species R. maculata based on nuclear projections into the pyrenoid. Porphyridium violaceum was described by P. Kornmann in 1965 and transferred to Rhodella by W. Wehrmeyer in 1971 based on plastid features and the non-parietal position of the nucleus. Molecular and fine structural evidences have now revealed that Rhodella maculata and R. violacea are one species, so R. violacea has nomenclatural priority and the correct name is Rhodella violacea (Kornmann) Wehrmeyer. The status of families within Rhodellophyceae was examined. The order Dixoniellales and family Dixoniellaceae are emended to include only Dixoniella and Neorhodella. The order Rhodellales and family Rhodellaceae are emended to include Rhodella and Corynoplastis. Glaucosphaera vacuolata Korshikov and the Glaucosphaeraceae Skuja (1954) with an emended description are transferred to the Glaucosphaerales ord. nov.

Application of Soft Actuation to Bilateral Control and Haptic Reproduction

        Asif Šabanovi´c,Tarik Uzunovi´c,Eray A. Baran,Minoru Yokoyama,Tomoyuki Shimono 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2022 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.20 No.3

The main research topic of this paper is to apply the sliding mode based soft actuation to smooth transition between position, force, and impedance control, and realize bilateral control and reproduction of the haptic motion. The proposed design rests on the sliding mode two steps procedure: in the first step, the generalized error - the sliding mode function - is selected in such a way that a closed loop system exhibits a desired dynamics. In the soft actuation method, the generalized error depends on the position and the force, thus allowing the modification of the position tracking if interaction with the environment appears. In the second step, the control is selected to enforce the desired convergence rate and the stability of the closed loop dynamics. The control allows “natural-human-like” behavior. The application to the bilateral control and reproduction of the haptic motion is discussed in detail and verified by experiments.
