        Lichen planus pigmentosus (LPP) is an uncommon variant of lichen planus that tends to occur in middle-aged individuals with darker pigmented skin. Clinical findings include hyperpigmented, brown to gray-brown macules and patches on sun-exposed areas and, in the rare inversus variant, on the flexural areas and intertriginous zones. The pattern of pigmentation is generally diffuse, although follicular, reticular, and unilateral linear variants have been described. We recently encountered a rare case of LPP developed in flexural area, not in sun-exposed area. A 58-year-old male patient presented with brown macules on the inguinal area for 6 months. One or two dark brown macules first appeared and spread gradually. A physical examination showed multiple, ill-defined, dark brown macules on inguinal area. The dermoscopic finding showed mottled pattern and elevated margin. The incisional biopsy was performed and a diagnosis of LPP was made. The fact that LPP can develop in non-sun-exposed areas as well as sun-exposed ones requires a new hypothesis for the pathogenesis of LPP.

        A duplex β″-Al<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> solid electrolyte consisting of a thin dense layer and a porous substrate

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>To improve the performance of Na-beta batteries at intermediate temperatures (≤200°C) where much improved cyclability and reduced degradation can be achieved, there is a need to lower the resistance/polarization originated from β″-Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> solid electrolyte (BASE) while maintaining its good strength. In this paper, the concept of a duplex BASE consisting of a thin dense electrolyte and a porous support was proposed as a solution to achieve low area-specific resistance (ASR) with good mechanical strength supported by the porous substrate. The effects of various factors including porosity, composition, and homogeneity of ingredients on the flexural strength of duplex BASEs were examined. In summary, lower porosity, higher YSZ content in the structure, and attrition milling of raw powders resulted in improved strength. The ASR measurement exhibited that the resistance of duplex BASEs was mainly originated from a dense layer. Overall, the maximum strength of 260MPa and the ASR value of 0.31Ωcm<SUP>2</SUP> (at 350°C) was achieved from a duplex BASE consisting of a 50μm thick dense layer (Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>:YSZ=7:3 in volume) and a 500μm thick porous support (Al<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>:YSZ=4:6 in volume with 19% open porosity). The effects of various factors on the properties of duplex BASEs will be discussed in detail.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> As a method to lower the ASR, the concept of duplex BASEs is presented. </LI> <LI> A duplex BASEs consists of a thin dense β″-alumina layer and a mechanically strong porous support. </LI> <LI> Processing factors including conversion, porosity, composition, and homogeneity influence the strength of a duplex BASE. </LI> <LI> The minimum ASR value of 0.31Ωcm<SUP>2</SUP> was achieved at 350°C with decent strength of 260MPa. </LI> </UL> </P>

        The demand for long span, reduction of floor-to-floor height is increased recently as buildings become bigger and higher. If the steel beam, however, becomes bigger, it is difficult to take advantage of merits of steel materials because of instability for buckling, excessive deflection, and failure of fatigue and if the concrete beam becomes bigger, it causes the problem of excessive crack and deflection. It, therefore, is difficult to realize the long span and reduction of floor-to-floor height simultaneously. The research to develop composite beam systems is increased gradually to overcome such limits. In the early time, the composite systems just consist of concrete and I-shape steel. The prestressing method, however, is introduced in composite beam systems because it is difficult to satisfy the demand for control of deflection and required strength by using composite beam systems which just put two materials together. The existing prestressed composite beams are not effective to introduce prestressing force because of high axial stiffness of I-shape steel. In this paper, the prestressed composite beam applied corrugated steel web that has high efficiency of prestressing force introduction and crack control ability, and high strength as results of effect of stress concentration to upper, lower flange which is known as Accordion Effect and increase of bearing area is proposed to improve the existing composite beams, propose the flexural behavior prediction model of proposed composite beam and simple horizontal shear strength prediction equation which takes account of the failure by separation of lower steel beam from upper slab that is different failure mode from previously reported failure modes, effect of concrete shear strength at the failure surface newly defined and inclined steel strand. The tests of one composite beam applied corrugated web and two prestressed composite beams applied corrugated web were conducted to verify the reliability of the proposed flexural behavior prediction model that takes account of Accordion Effect by assuming just the area near upper, lower flange can resist axial force and using Effective Area and Effective Moment of Inertia. Proposed model predicted the flexural behavior of the composite beams applied corrugated steel web accurately, the strain at the top of the section very well, the amount of steel strand stress increment with high reliability at each loading step, and the horizontal shear strength accurately.

        Unilateral acanthosis nigricans (AN) is an exceedingly rare disorder, probably viewed as a nevoid disorder and sometimes called nevoid AN, which is characterized by hyperkeratosis, papillomatosis and moderate acanthosis. The lesions of unilateral AN are distributed unilaterally and morphologic features are similar to other forms of AN. It is not associated with a syndrome, endocrinopathy, drugs or cancers. Here we describe a case of unilateral AN in a 16 year-old Korean man who presented with a broad ashy brown hyperpigmented, confluent hyperkeratotic plaque on the right posterior thigh.

        비전형적인 임상양상으로 발생한 일과성 아연 결핍증

        Zinc deficiency in breast-fed infants is an important disorder. Unlike acrodermatitis enteropathica, it is transient and stops when nursing ends. We report on a case of a breast-fed, full-term male infant who presented with erythematous fine scaly patches and plaques involving the flexural area and trunk at 4 month of age. Clinical impressions of intertrigo, fungal infection or inverse psoriasis were considered. These lesions did not respond to treatment with topical antifungal agents and corticosteroids. The results of laboratory investigations revealed a lowered zinc level in the infant`s serum (48.4μg/dl: normal 70∼121μg/dl) and in the mother`s milk (16μg/dl: normal 48∼75μg/dl) and a normal level of zinc in the mother`s serum. After the patient`s mother was given zinc supplements, the skin lesions were dramatically improved and his serum zinc level became normal. Early recognition of the disorder and introduction of zinc supplementation rapidly reversed the transient zinc deficiency. (Korean J Dermatol 2011;49(6):529∼532)

      • BFRP 외부보강재의 형태에 따른 RC 보의 휨 성능 평가

        실제 현장에서 RC 보의 휨 성능을 향상시킬 목적으로 대부분 GFRP 보강재(유리섬유)가 사용되고 있지만,폐기 시 다량의 오염 물질을 배출하는 단점이 있다. 이와 같은 부분을 보완하기 위해 선행연구에서는 친환경적인 BFRP 보강재(현무암섬 유)로 대체하여 실험이 수행되었으며, GFRP 보강재와 유사한 성능이 나타나는 것으로 분석되었다. 하지만, 보강재의 부착성능이 저하됨에 따른 RC보 단부에 응력집중 현상이 나타났다. 이에 따라 본 연구에서는 보강재가 부착되는 유효단면적을 매 개변수로 2가지 형태의 BFRP 보강재를 제작하였으며, 이에 따른 성능을 선행연구와 비교하였다. 결과적으로, Single Web-Type과 Double Web-Type으로 보강한 RC보는 Normal-Type으로 보강한 RC보에 비해 균열 수는 각각 26.67%,20% 감소하였고, 항복응력은 각각 4.57%, 9.33% 증가하는 것으로 나타나 유효부착면적이 증가할수록 RC보의 보강 휨 성능이 향상되는 것을 알 수 있다.
