What do we know about uncommon complications associated with third molar extractions? A scoping review of case reports and case series

Naichuan Su(Naichuan Su ),Sana Harroui(Sana Harroui ),Fred Rozema(Fred Rozema ),Stefan Listl(Stefan Listl ),Jan de Lange(Jan de Lange ),Geert J.M.G. van der Heijden(Geert J.M.G. van der Heijden ) 대한구강악안면외과학회 2023 대한구강악안면외과학회지 Vol.49 No.1

The current study aimed to explore the types and frequencies of uncommon complications associated with third molar extractions based on a scoping review of case reports and case series. The study used an electronic literature search based on PubMed and Embase up to March 31, 2020, with an update performed on October 22, 2021. Any case reports and case series that reported complications associated with third molar extractions were included. The types of complications were grouped and the main symptoms of each type of complication were summarized. A total of 51 types of uncommon complications were identified in 248 patients from 186 studies. Most types of complications were post-operative. In the craniofacial and cervical regions, the most frequent complications included iatrogenic displacement of the molars or root fragments in the craniofacial area, late mandibular fracture, and subcutaneous emphysema. In other regions, the most frequent complications include pneumomediastinum, pneumorrhachis, pneumothorax, and pneumopericardium. Of the patients, 37 patients had life-threatening uncommon complications and 20 patients had long-term/irreversible uncommon complications associated with third molar extractions. In conclusion, a variety of uncommon complications associated with third molar extractions were identified. Most complications occurred in the craniofacial and cervical regions and were mild and transient.

      • Prognostic Value of β-catenin Expression in Breast Cancer Patients: a Meta-analysis

Zhang, De-Pu,Li, Xiao-Wei,Lang, Jing-He Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.14

Background: ${\beta}$-catenin plays a crucial role in the progression of breast cancer (BC) and a prognostic role of in BC patients has been widely reported. However, controversy still remains. Materials and Methods: Identical search strategies were used to search relevant literature in electronic databases updated to July 1, 2014. Individual hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were extracted and pooled HRs with 95%CIs were used to evaluate the strength of association between positive ${\beta}$-catenin expression in different subcellular locations and survival results of BC patients. Subgroup and meta-regression analyses were performed to explore heterogeneity. Funnel plots of Begg's and Egger's linear regression test were used to investigate publication bias. Heterogeneity and sensitivity were also assessed. All the work was completed using STATA. Results: A total of 2,204 patients from 12 evaluative studies were finally included. Pooled HRs and 95%CIs suggested that ${\beta}$-catenin expression in cytoplasm/nucleus had an unfavorable impact on both overall survival (OS) (HR: 1.93, 95%CI: 1.40-2.65) and disease free survival (DFS)/ recurrent free survival (RFS) (HR: 1.60, 95%CI: 1.20-2.13) in BC patients. However, here was no significant association between ${\beta}$-catenin expression in the membranes with OS (HR: 0.65, 95%CI: 0.42-1.02) or DFS/RFS (HR: 0.66, 95%CI: 0.38-1.13). Publication bias was absent in all of the four outcomes. Sensitivity analysis revealed that the results of this meta-analysis were robust. Conclusions: Positive ${\beta}$-catenin expression in cytoplasm/nucleus rather than in membrane is a significant prognostic factor in patients with BC who have been surgically treated.

John 1:29, 36: The Meaning of ἀμνὸς τοῦ θεοῦ and John’s Soteriology

Marijke H. de Lang 대한성서공회 2015 성경원문연구 Vol.- No.37

The title “Lamb of God” for Jesus in John 1:29 and 1:36 has traditionally been explained as a reference to Jesus’ sacrificial death, and the phrase “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world” has mostly been interpreted in terms of Old Testament sacrifices or near-sacrifices as for example Genesis 22 (the binding of Isaac) or Leviticus 16 (the scapegoat of the Day of Atonement), the Passover lamb, or as a reminiscence to the Suffering Servant of Isaiah 53. The aim of this article is to argue two things. First, that the words “lamb of God” do not refer to a sacrifical animal. They originate from Isaiah 53, not, however, as a reference to an atoning sacrifice, but as an expression of Jesus’ complete obedience to the Father and his willingness to suffer (and ultimately die) as a consequence. Secondly, that in his Gospel, the Fourth Evangelist focuses on the salvific effect of the believer’s affirmative “yes” to Jesus as the one through whom the Father can be known, rather than on Jesus’ death as saving event.

One Cry or Two? Mark’s Composition of Mark 15:34-37

        Marijke H. de Lang (재)대한성서공회 성경원문연구소 2019 성경원문연구 Vol.0 No.45

Mark 15:34-37 describes the moment of Jesus’ death. In these verses, Jesus cries out twice, in v. 34 and in v. 37. In v. 34, his cry is a quotation of the first half of Psalm 22:2a (Ελωι ελωι λεμα σαβαχθανι) while in v. 37, his cry is an unspecified shout (ἐβόησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς φωνῇ μεγάλῃ). In many translations of Mark’s gospel, the words in v. 37 are rendered in such a way as to suggest that Jesus’ cry in v. 37 is a second utterance, but in the literature on Mark 15, opinions are divided. The parallel in Matthew (27:45) indeed allows for the interpretation of two distinct utterances because Matthew’s gospel uses an explicit πάλιν in the second case (n v. 50). However, there are two reasons to understand Mark’s gospel as narrating the event in a different way, with only one utterance intended in vv. 34-37. The first reason is that even though πάλιν (“again”) is frequently used by Mark, it is not used in v. 37. As such, it is not made explicit in v. 37 that a second cry is intended. This is indeed all the more remarkable because in other cases, Mark uses πάλιν explicitly to emphasize the repetition of an event in the same chapter. The second reason for assuming why Mark reports only one cry is that the transition from vv. 34-36 to v. 37 is awkward and seems to indicate a redactional intervention of Mark. In this article, I will argue that in vv. 34-36, there is sufficient evidence to assume Markan redaction, while v. 37 is most likely original. My conclusion is that vv. 34-36 are a Markan addition to an original v. 37, resulting in the typically Markan style feature of “duality”. In other words, v. 37 does not recount a second cry but resumes and repeats the cry in v. 34.

      • (Improvement of Inter-Layer Motion Prediction in Scalable Video Coding) A Visual Inpainting Method Based on the Compressed Domain

JIANG, Yi-Wei,XU, De,LEE, Moon-Ho,LANG, Cong-Yan Institute of Electronics, Information and Communic 2007 IEICE transactions on information and systems Vol.90 No.10

Visual inpainting is an interpolation problem that restores an image or a frame with missing or damaged parts. Over the past decades, a number of computable models of visual inpainting have been developed, but most of these models are based on the pixel domain. Little theoretical and computational work of visual inpainting is based on the compressed domain. In this paper, a visual inpainting model in the discrete cosine transform (DCT) domain is proposed. DCT coefficients of the non-inpainting blocks are utilized to get block features, and those block features are propagated to the inpainting region iteratively. The experimental results with I frames of MPEG4 are presented to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed algorithm.

Status of PEM-based Polarimetric MSE Development at KSTAR

고진석,정진일,Seung Tae Oh,고원하,Maarten de Bock,Henry Ong,Guido Lange 한국물리학회 2014 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.65 No.8

A multi-chord PEM (photo elastic modulator)-based polarimetric motional Stark effect (MSE)system is under development for the KSTAR tokamak. The conceptual design for the front opticswas optimized to preserve not only the polarization state of the input light for the MSE measurementsbut also the signal intensity of the existing charge exchange spectroscopy (CES) system thatwill share the front optics with the MSE. The optics design incorporates how to determine thenumber of channels and the number of fibers for each channel. A dielectric coating will be appliedon the mirror to minimize the relative reflectivity and the phase shift between the two orthogonalpolarization components of the incident light. Lenses with low stress-birefringence constants will beadopted to minimize non-linear and random changes in the polarization through the lenses, whichis a trade-off with the rather high Faraday rotation in the lenses because the latter effect is linearand can be relatively easily calibrated out. Intensive spectrum measurements and their comparisonswith the simulated spectra are done to assist the design of the bandpass filter system that will alsouse tilting stages to remotely control the passband. Following the system installation in 2014, theMSE measurements are expected to be performed during the 2015 KSTAR campaign.

Design of potent, non-toxic anticancer peptides based on the structure of the antimicrobial peptide, temporin-1CEa

        Qing-Zhu Yang,Che Wang,Lei Lang,Yang Zhou,He Wang,De-Jing Shang 대한약학회 2013 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.36 No.11

Recent advances in the search for novel anticanceragents have indicated that the positively chargedantimicrobial peptides have emerged as promising agentsoffering several advantages over the conventional anticancerdrugs. As a naturally occurring, cationic, a-helicalantimicrobial peptide, temproin-1CEa has been proved toexhibit a potent anticancer effect and a moderate hemolyticactivity. In order to reduce the hemolytic activity of temporin-1CEa and improve its anticancer potency towards arange of human breast cancer cells, in the present study, sixanalogs of temporin-1CEa were rationally designed andsynthesized. The amphipathicity levels and a-helicalstructural patterns of peptides were reserved, while theircationic property and hydrophobicity were changed. Theresults of MTT and hemolysis assay indicated that theanalog peptides displayed an improved anticancer activityand showed an overall optimized therapeutic index. Thehydrophobicity of peptides was positively correlated withtheir hemolytic and antitumor activities. Moreover, the datasuggest a strategy of increasing the cationicity whilemaintaining the moderate hydrophobicity of naturallyoccurring amphipathic a-helical peptides to generate analogswith improved cytotoxicity against tumor cells butdecreased activity against non-neoplastic cells such ashuman erythrocytes. This work highlights the potential forrational design and synthesis of improved antimicrobialpeptides that have the capability to be used therapeuticallyfor treatment of cancers.
