        miR-139-5p promotes neovascularization in diabetic retinopathy by regulating the phosphatase and tensin homolog

        Pathological retinal neovascularization is adriver of the progression of diabetic retinopathy (DR). Thepresent study sought to identify the microRNAs (miRNAs)that are diff erentially expressed during the progression ofDR as well as to explore the specifi c regulatory mechanismof those miRNAs in retinal neovascularization. Using amicroarray data set and a diabetic mouse model, it was determinedthat miR-139-5p was signifi cantly upregulated duringthe progression of DR. The in vitro investigation revealedan elevation in the miR-139-5p level in both the high glucose(HG)-treated mouse retinal microvascular endothelialcells (mRMECs) and the HG-treated human RMECs(hRMECs). The miR-139-5p overexpression elevated cellmigration, facilitated tube formation, and increased vascularendothelial growth factor (VEGF) protein level in thehRMECs. While the angiogenic eff ect of miR-139-5p overexpressionwas halted by an anti-VEGF antibody. Meanwhile,the miR-139-5p knockdown eliminated the VEGFinducedcell migration and tube formation in the hRMECs. The phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) was the targetgene of the miR-139-5p. PTEN overexpression removed theangiogenic eff ect of miR-139-5p overexpression, which ledto reduced cell migration and tube formation. In the diabeticmice, the miR-139-5p antagomir eff ectively decreased theacellular capillaries and suppressed the formation of aberrantblood vessels in the retinal tissues. Taken together, miR-139-5p promotes retinal neovascularization by repressingPTEN expression.

        Low-temperature and solvent-free production of biomass-derived diesel-range C17 precursor via one-pot cascade acylation–alkylation over Sn4+-montmorillonite

        A novel carbon-increasing catalytic route via one-pot cascade acylation–alkylation of biomass-derived 2-methylfuran and acetic anhydride over Sn4+-exchanged K-10 montmorillonite (Sn4+-K-10) was demonstrated to be highly efficient for the production of C17 oxygenate 1,1,1-tris(5-methyl-2-furyl)ethane with a high yield of 87% and 90% selectivity at 60 °C in 8 h under solvent-free conditions. Characterization techniques manifested Sn4+-K-10 to have layered and mesoporous (5.7 nm) texture structure, Lewis–Brønsted acid paired sites and uniformly dispersed Sn species, which greatly contributed to the predominant reactivity and recyclability of Sn4+-K-10. Systematic studies based on GC–MS and NMR were also conducted to elucidate the catalytic mechanism.

      • Social Identity at Work : Interpreter’s Grammatical Choices and Interpersonal Alignment

        This study explores the role Chinese government in-house interpreters have played at several high-level annual press conferences hosted by the Chinese government. By analyzing their interpreting choices for elements of MOOD, defined in the Systemic Functional Linguistic as a discourse analysis tool and using data from a self-built corpus consisting of multiple video clips of the events, this study has discovered that the interpreters realise a level of interpersonal alignment with only one party in interpreter-mediated communication, and that the choices of alignment are heavily affected by the interpreter’s evaluation of the power relationship. The findings also suggest that although greatly constrained by their institutional roles, these interpreters remain as linguistic professionals. However, their grammatical choices demonstrate a tendency of their shifting social positions between the speaker and the addressees, betraying their deliberate efforts in embracing two roles in interpreting for the press conferences - one as inseparable part of the institution with allegiance pledged to the government, and the other as individual interpreters adhering to the norms of the profession.

        Syntactic Linearity as a Strategy in Simultaneous Interpreting : A Case Study on English-Chinese Interpretation

        This study has assessed whether syntactic linearity can be used as one of SI strategies from a linguistic perspective. Using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) as the linguistic framework, the study analyses the thematic choices of Obama’s speech made in his visit to China and its simultaneous interpretation by three interpreters and focuses on the analytic unit of clause being grammatically correlated to the “unit of meaning” in the TL. The findings show that most of the Themes in English text are preserved in Chinese. Furthermore, the textual and topical elements of Theme in English are more influential than the interpersonal Theme for the interpreters to decide whether a Theme should be retained or changed in facilitating syntactic linearity in SI. The assessment result seems to support that syntactic linearity could be used as a strategy for SI training together with other coping strategies.

        Making Sight Translation Dynamic : Eliciting Summarization as a Strategy for Simultaneous Interpretation

        Focusing on the specific exercise intended for eliciting summarization strategy to mitigate content omission for novice SI trainees, this article captures and analyses relevant longitudinal data from an action research conducted to investigate the extent to which sight translation (ST) facilitates skill development and transfer for simultaneous interpreting (SI) and to explore what specific strategies novice SI students could elicit from doing a dynamic type of sight translation (DST). Based on the action research conducted with three groups of student participants enrolled in Master of Conference Interpreting Program, a one-year program in 2014, 2015 and 2016 respectively, this article specifically reports the actions in eliciting the strategy of summarization via DST exercise and examines how the students responded to such a new teaching tool in a teaching environment. While the finding confirms that the progression from declarative knowledge to procedural knowledge takes time, it also supports that DST can be a useful driver of skill development and strategy application for novice interpreters at the beginning of conference interpreting training due to its similarities to SI.

        Influences of A- or B-site substitution on the activity of LaMnO3 perovskite-type catalyst in oxidation of diesel particle

        was partially substituted at A- or B-site by Sol-Gel method and characterized by XRD, SEMand BET. Perovskite oxides were formed in all substitutions. The catalytic activities of substituted catalysts on carbonblack oxidation were measured by Temperature Programing Oxidation (TPO). Experimental results showed that allsubstitutions increased the catalytic activity of LaMnO3, and La0.8Cs0.2MnO3 showed the highest catalytic activity. Undertight contact, the activity enhancement of diferent substitutions decreased in the order Cs>K>V>Ce>Co>Cu>Fe.Dynamic analysis showed that partial substitutions increased the pre-exponential factor and the catalytic activity byincreasing the oxygen vacancy on the catalyst surface. The active components on the surfaces of La0.8Ce0.2MnO3 andLaMn0.8V0.2O3 included CeO2 and LaVO4, which changed the apparent activities and dynamic parameters of these twocatalysts.

        Simulation of the hydraulic isolation efficiency during multistage hydrajet fracturing

        Effective isolation between target zones is critical to multistage fracturing. Low pressure zone caused by the hydrajet is used to isolate stages in the multistage hydrajet fracturing technology. However, there are few researches available in the literature that investigates the hydraulic isolation efficiency considering the existence of multiple fractures. This paper builds a three-dimensional computational-fluid-dynamics model with FLUENT software to study the flow field along annular sections under different conditions. It is verified that the results obtained from the model are consistent with experimental data along the perforation tunnel. The mass flow rate ratio between two outlets is proposed to analyze the hydraulic isolation efficiency in hydrajet multistage fracturing. The results show that annular fluid converges into the perforation tunnel due to the high-speed hydrajet even though there is a pre-existing fracture behind. Effective hydraulic isolation can be generated by reducing the pressure differences between target zones and the annular injection velocity as well as by enlarging the jet velocity and the area ratio. It is found that there exists an optimum area ratio to get the maximum isolation efficiency. Sensitivity analysis indicates the pressure difference is the dominant factor affecting the hydraulic isolation efficiency. A fully quadratic model derived from the response surface method is presented to predict the hydraulic isolation efficiency for real fracturing. This study will be able to provide practical guidance for the optimization of hydrajet multistage fracturing.

        MLL4 Regulates the Progression of Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer by Regulating the PI3K/AKT/SOX2 Axis

        Purpose Mixed-lineage leukemia protein 4 (MLL4/KMT2D) is a histone methyltransferase, and its mutation has been reported to be associated with a poor prognosis in many cancers, including lung cancer. We investigated the function of MLL4 in lung carcinogenesis. Materials and Methods RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) in A549 cells transfected with control siRNA or MLL4 siRNA was performed. Also, we used EdU incorporation assay, colony formation assays, growth curve analysis, transwell invasion assays, immunohistochemical staining, and in vivo bioluminescence assay to investigate the function of MLL4 in lung carcinogenesis. Results We found that MLL4 expression was downregulated in non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tissues compared to adjacent normal tissues and tended to decrease with disease stage progression. We analyzed the transcriptomes in control and MLL4- deficient cells using high-throughput RNA deep sequencing (RNA-seq) and identified a cohort of target genes, such as SOX2, ATF1, FOXP4, PIK3IP1, SIRT4, TENT5B, and LFNG, some of which are related to proliferation and metastasis. Our results showed that low expression of MLL4 promotes NSCLC cell proliferation and metastasis and is required for the maintenance of NSCLC stem cell properties. Conclusion Our findings identify an important role of MLL4 in lung carcinogenesis through transcriptional regulation of PIK3IP1, affecting the PI3K/AKT/SOX2 axis, and suggest that MLL4 could be a potential prognostic indicator and target for NSCLC therapy.
