The fumigant activity of volatiles generated by Streptomyces alboflavus TD-1 against Fusarium moniliforme Sheldon was investigated. The results showed that the mycelial growth, sporulation, and spore germination of F. moniliforme were significantly suppressed, and that membrane permeability was disrupted in the presence of the volatiles. Gas chromatography-mass Spectrometry analysis revealed 31 kinds of volatile organic compound from the volatiles. Among them, two earthy-smelling substances, namely, 2-methylisoborneol (50.97%) and trans-1,10-dimethyl-trans-9-decalinol (3.10%)were found. The most abundant compound, 2-methylisoborneol,exhibited inhibitory activity against F. moniliforme by fumigation. All these results suggested that S. alboflavus TD-1 can be a promising starter for the inhibition of F. moniliforme through fumigant action.

Assembly errors may change contact state of gear pairs, then induce failure and vibration. To reveal the effects of assembly errors and tooth modification on the meshing characteristics, the loaded tooth contact analysis (LTCA) is conducted through an improved algorithm. The time-varying meshing stiffness (TVMS), static transmission error (STE) and contact stress (CS) are calculated considering assembly errors and tooth modification. Then, sensitivity of meshing characteristics to coupling assembly errors are investigated based on the design of orthogonal experiment (DOE). The meshing characteristic analysis results show that assembly errors have a significant effect on mesh characteristics of the gear pair. The results of sensitivity analysis indicate that the meshing characteristic is the most sensitive to axial deviation for the model used in this paper.

Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an important enzyme which catalyzes superoxide radicals to hydrogen peroxide. A Cu, Zn sod-like gene was found in Bombyx mori nuclear polyhedrosis virus encoding 151 amino acids. To demonstrate its function, a recombinant virus named dsBmNPV with deleted sod gene was constructed. It was discovered that the sod gene was not essential for viral replication. Studies on growth of budded virus in BmN cells and superoxide dismutase and catalase activities in vivo after dsBmNPV infection showed that the titer of dsBmNPV decreased obviously comparing to wild type BmNPV, the sod gene was effective on genomic DNA replication of baculovirus, the peak of SOD activity of silkworm infected with wt-BmNPV appeared between 36 and 48 hrs post infection, and with dsBmNPV, it did not appear. And the changes of CAT activity after infection were similar to SOD activity.

Herein, stainless-steel slag was used to prepare glass–ceramics. The effects of the MgO content on the occurrence, distributionstate, and migration behavior of Cr in glass–ceramics as well as glass properties were systematically studied. Results revealedthat in the nucleation stage, the number of Cr-spinel (Cr spinel) nanocrystals initially increased and then decreased with theincreasing MgO content. In the crystallization stage, the diopside crystal phase considered Cr-spinel nanocrystals asheterogeneous nuclei, which gradually nucleated and grew. Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectronspectroscopy analyses showed that part of Cr in the spinel migrated into the diopside lattice and some other parts remainedin the Cr spinel wrapped by the diopside. Cr in the glass phase also diffused and migrated into the diopside lattice with theformation of diopside crystals. When the MgO content was 12.3 wt.%, 97.33 wt.% of the total amount of Cr was observedin the diopside crystal phase and the leaching concentration of Cr in the glass–ceramics was only 0.006 mg/L. The compressivestrength of the glass–ceramics was 261.7 MPa, and the Vickers hardness was 1007.7 HV. The research results providetheoretical and technical support for strengthening Cr fixation and realizing harmless and high-value utilization of stainlesssteelslag.

Three male Gayal (Bos frontalis) and three male Yunnan Yellow cattle (Bos taurus) were fed pelleted lucerne and measurements made of digestibility, nitrogen utilisation, rumen fermentation and microbial population and key plasma metabolites. Total actual dry matter intake was similar but when expressed in terms of live weight or metabolic live weight feed intakes were significantly higher (p<0.05) for Gayal than cattle. Apparent digestibilities of dry matter, organic matter, fibre and dietary nitrogen were similar for both Gayal and cattle. Rumen ammonia nitrogen and total volatile fatty acids were significantly higher (p<0.05) for Gayal than cattle and total numbers of viable rumen bacteria, cellulolytic and amylolytic bacteria, but not proteolytic bacteria nor protozoa, were significantly greater (p<0.05) for Gayal than cattle. Although Gayal have a different rumen ecology to cattle, similar digestive parameters were exhibited. Further research is required to establish relationship between rumen ecology and digestive parameters.

In the position sensorless control of permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), the traditional sliding mode observer (SMO) uses the switching function, which presents serious chattering. Otherwise, the traditional SMO uses a low-pass filter to filter the harmonic components in the estimated back-EMF. The low-pass filter usually causes phase delay in the estimated rotor position. These problems restrict the further development of SMO. In this paper, an improved sliding mode observer (ISMO) with suppressed chattering and no phase delay is studied. In the ISMO, a sine saturation function is designed as the control function, and a synchronous reference frame filter (SRFF) is designed to eliminate the phase delay of ISMO. Different from other filters, the SRFF can not only filter out the harmonic components in the estimated back-EMF, but also effectively makes the phase delay almost zero. In addition, in order to improve the poor anti-disturbance performance of position sensorless control, a load disturbance observer (LDO) is introduced on the basis of the ISMO. The experimental results prove the effectiveness of the ISMO, and the addition of LDO improves the anti-disturbance ability of the system.

Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) is a common sys-temic skeletal disease characterized by reduced bone mass and microarchitecture deterioration. Although differentially expressed SOX5 has been found in bone marrow from ovariectomized mice, its role in osteogenic differentiation in human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) from bone marrow in PMOP remains unknown. In this study, we investigated the biological function of SOX5 and explore its molecular mechanism in hMSCs from patients with PMOP. Our findings showed that the mRNA and protein expression levels of SOX5 were upregulated in hMSCs isolated from bone marrow samples of PMOP patients. We also found that SOX5 overexpression decreased the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and the gene expression of osteoblast markers including Collagen I, Runx2 and Osterix, which were increased by SOX5 knockdown using RNA interference. Furthermore, TNF- notably upregulated the SOX5 mRNA expression level, and SOX5 knockdown reversed the effect of TNF- on osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs. In addition, SOX5 overexpression increased Kruppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) gene expression, which was decreased by SOX5 silencing. KLF4 knockdown abrogated the suppressive effect of SOX5 overexpression on osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs. Taken together, our results indicated that TNF--induced SOX5 upregulation inhibited osteogenic differentiation of hMSCs through KLF4 signal pathway, suggesting that SOX5 might be a novel therapeutic target for PMOP treatment.

Rice, as a major crop in the world, produces huge agronomic biomass residues besides food, which consist of cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin. Many master regulators of secondary wall synthesis were identified in the model plant Arabidopsis. In this study, we investigated the function of a NAC (NAM, ATAF, and CUC2) transcription factor related to secondary cell wall biosynthesis, which is highly expressed in rice sclerenchyma tissue and is named OsSWN1. Our results showed that engineering of OsSWN1 could exhibit multiple features regulated to agronomic traits and bioenergy research. Over-expression of OsSWN1 caused an erect-leaf and enclosed-flower phenotype. Secondary cell wall-related genes were actively expressed in transgenic plants with obvious ectopic lignin deposition in the leaf collar, while increased lignin content and decreased the sugar yield correspondingly. In addition, down-regulation of OsSWN1 expression levels decreased lignin content and increased the sugar yield in transgenic plants. Bioinformatics analysis revealed that OsSWN1-like genes are highly conserved in switchgrass and sorghum, suggesting a possibility of manipulating the expression level of the OsSWN1 orthologs in the bioenergy crops for biofuel production.
