Predicting the Weed Control Efficacy of Photosynthesis Inhibitors by PPM Method

The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse in Beijing, China, to determine whether weed control efficacy could be predicted based on Plant Photosynthesis Meter (PPM) values measured shortly after the application of photosynthesis inhibitors. The decrease of PPM values of the weed leaves treated with the mixture of atrazine and bentazone could be measured 1 day after treatment (DAT). The decreased extents depended on weed susceptibility and application dosage. There was significant correlation between the PPM values of the treated leaves 1 to 3 DAT and the biomass reduction 14 DAT. The experimental findings indicated that PPM values measured in early days after treatment could give reasonable prediction on weed control. The herbicide usually provided 90% control by weed biomass when PPM value was about 20 and relatively poor control when PPM value over 20.

<P>PtS<SUB>2</SUB> is a newly developed group 10 2D layered material with high carrier mobility, wide band gap tunability, strongly bound excitons, symmetrical metallic and magnetic edge states, and ambient stability, making it attractive in nanoelectronic, optoelectronic, and spintronic fields. To the aim of application, a large-scale synthesis is necessary. For transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) compounds, a thermally assisted conversion method has been widely used to fabricate wafer-scale thin films. However, PtS<SUB>2</SUB> cannot be easily synthesized using the method, as the tetragonal PtS phase is more stable. Here, we use a specified quartz part to locally increase the vapor pressure of sulfur in a chemical vapor deposition furnace and successfully extend this method for the synthesis of PtS<SUB>2</SUB> thin films in a scalable and controllable manner. Moreover, the PtS and PtS<SUB>2</SUB> phases can be interchangeably converted through a proposed strategy. Field-effect transistor characterization and photocurrent measurements suggest that PtS<SUB>2</SUB> is an ambipolar semiconductor with a narrow band gap. Moreover, PtS<SUB>2</SUB> also shows excellent gas-sensing performance with a detection limit of ∼0.4 ppb for NO<SUB>2</SUB>. Our work presents a relatively simple way of synthesizing PtS<SUB>2</SUB> thin films and demonstrates their promise for high-performance ultrasensitive gas sensing, broadband optoelectronics, and nanoelectronics in a scalable manner. Furthermore, the proposed strategy is applicable for making other PtX<SUB>2</SUB> compounds and TMDs which are compatible with modern silicon technologies.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
Inhibiting N-Cadherin-Mediated Adhesion Affects Gap Junction Communication in Isolated Rat Hearts

Cadherin-mediated adherens junctions is impaired conco-mitant with a decrease in connexin 43 (Cx43) in diseases or pathological processes. We have investigated the acute effects of adherens junction impairment in isolated rat hearts by introducing Ala-His-Ala-Val-Asp-NH2 (AHAVD, a synthetic peptide) as a specific inhibitor of N-cadherin. Effect of AHAVD on N-cadherin mediated adhension was analyzed by Cardiomy-ocyte aggregation assay. Laser confocal microscopy showed disrupted cell-cell contacts in cultured neonatal cardiomyocytes co-incubated with 0.2 mM AHAVD. In isolated adult rat hearts, Cx43 was redis-tributed along the bilateral of cardiomyocytes from the intercalated discs and significant dephosphorylation of Cx43 on serine368 occurred concomitantly with decreased gap junction (GJ) function in dose dependent manner after 1 h perfusion with AHAVD. These results indicate that im-pairing cad-herin-mediated adhesion by AHAVD rapidly results in Cx43 redistribution and dephosphorylation of serine368, thereby impairing GJ communication function.

In this study, three double-plate connected L-shaped concrete-filled steel tube composite (LCFST-D) columns were subjected to axial and eccentric loading tests using spherical-hinge supports to relieve the bidirectional rotation constraints. By analyzing the failure phenomenon of the LCFST-D specimen, the rotation of the endplate, and the comparison of similarities and differences between the support of the knife-edge and the support of the spherical-hinge, the bidirectional eccentric loading performance of the LCFST-D column when the bidirectional rotation constraint was released was studied. The test results show that when the spherical-hinge support was loaded, the out-of-the-plane deflection was more evident than the knife hinge. The bearing capacity of the LCFST-D specimen decreases as the eccentricity increased. When the end rotation constraints were relieved, the failure mode of the axial and eccentric loading was nontorsional bidirectional instability. In addition, the loading tests using spherical-hinge supports were verified to effectively release end rotation constraints. A finite element model for the LCFST-D column was established, and its accuracy was confirmed. From the failure mode, deflection, bearing capacity, and rotation of the endplate, the differences between spherical-hinge, knife-edge hinge, and rigid pad loading supports and their influence on bidirectional eccentric loading tests performed on special-shaped columns were investigated. The results show that the bidirectional eccentric loading performance of the LCFST-D column can be reflected by spherical-hinge supports. The theoretical formula was used simultaneously to verify the data from the finite element model and the test.

<P>Recently many novel magnetoresistance (MR) phenomena have been reported from studies of two dimensional (2D) materials. Here, we report on the exotic transport behavior of VS2. A large negative and quadratic MR of −10% is observed for an in-plane magnetic field B up to 14 T. Remarkably, when the applied field deviates from the in-plane orientation there is a threshold field, Bc, and the MR shows a plateau of near zero MR. When B < Bc, only a single state exists and the transition between quantum spin states is forbidden. Our work sheds new light on the MR of magnetic 2D materials with localized states and may spur further investigations.</P>

<P>Graphene is moving beyond the realm of simple electronic devices toward areas such as advanced biochemical sensing. The infrared (IR) response of graphene, characterized by collective long-lived charge-carrier oscillations, could be applied in IR-absorption spectroscopy, typically used for bio-chemical analysis. However, direct light absorption by propagating plasmons in graphene is forbidden due to the large momentum mismatch. Proposed methods to overcome this bottleneck come at a cost, the use of noble metal particles on graphene reduces the spectral bandwidth and nano-structuring graphene is expensive. Here, we propose a simple and cheap method to fabricate large scale ultra-sensitive graphene based mid-IR biosensors, by introducing dielectric beads to excite mid-IR range plasmons. Interference from waves scattered by the beads excite surface plasmon polaritons, which propagate several micrometers in graphene and enhance the interaction between the molecules and mid-IR light. SPA Model on Repair Priority for Earthquake-damaged Transport Infrastructures

Sequence is an important mission and performance in such repair decision-making operation for the earthquake-damaged transport infrastructures. Through introducing Set Pair Analysis ideology, the decision-making model was established for earthquake repair sequence of transport infrastructures. Then, the SPA comparing space was built, the association identity, contrary and difference degree parameters were calculated for repair projects, the relative SPA proximity was determined for each repair project, as well as the repair sequence was given. Meanwhile, the integration of Efficiency Coefficient method and Information Entropy to determine the index weights, improved the reliability of repair sequence. Finally, Case showed a typical evaluation index system and model application, which provided a scientific, simple and suitable method on the repair priority decision-making operation for the earthquake-damaged transport infrastructures.
