The ways in which the dominant cultural majority frames the educational system, determines perceptions of its own identity and understandings of the ‘other.’ In this article I take a political approach, by examining the management of cultural diversity within Spanish education policies, treating “education as the mirror of society”. This article analyzes Spanish challenges and policies approaches towards the management of immigration related diversity in education. The main finding is that there is not one approach, but several, due to both the decentralized character of the education system and the multiplicity of diversity that is at stake (i.e. language, religion, culture etc.).

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the apical pressure generated by 2 endodontic irrigation needles and the GentleWave system in mandibular molars. Materials and Methods: The mesial and distal root canals of 12 mandibular molars were irrigated with a 30-gauge close-end needle or with a 30-gauge open-end needle. Procedures were performed in the mesial and distal canals. The GentleWave procedure and irrigation at 1 mm from the apex in the distal roots using an open-end needle were used, respectively, as negative and positive controls. The apical pressure was measured using a data acquisition pressure setup. Apical pressure exerted by the different needles in the 2 different canal types was statistically compared using 2-way analysis of variance. Results: Significant differences were found in the apical pressure for both needles and the canal type. The lowest values were obtained with close-end needles and in mesial canals. Negative apical pressure values were obtained using GentleWave. Conclusions: The needle and the canal type influenced the apical pressure. The GentleWave procedure produced negative apical pressure.
Assessing the Economic Benefits of Investment in Capacity Building

This paper presented the results of an economic assessment study commissioned by the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development of the Department of Science and Technology (PCAARRD-DOST). Primary data on production, costs, investments, and socio-economic and farm-specific characteristics were obtained from 382 goat enterprise owners from Leyte, La Union, Isabela, and Nueva Ecija, Philippines using a pre-tested structured questionnaire. The analytical method used to measure the return on the donor’s investment is the Benefit-Cost-Analysis (BCA). The study showed that the investment on capacity building generated a Net Present Value (NPV) of Php 3.8 million, a Benefit-Cost Ratio (BCR) of 1.36 and an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 35.48%. It is therefore concluded that the Rural Enterprise Development (RED) project provided positive returns on the investments of PCAARRD and the participating Local Government Units (LGUs). Hence, it was recommended that the Department of Agriculture institutionalize the RED Project so that it could be replicated in other regions of the country.
Promising cellulolytic fungi isolates for rice straw degradation

The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of eight fungal isolates obtained from soils in rice crops for straw degradation in situ. From the initial eight isolates, Pleurotus ostreatus T1.1 and Penicillium sp. HC1 were selected for further characterization based on qualitative cellulolytic enzyme production and capacity to use rice straw as a sole carbon source. Subsequently, cellulolytic, xylanolytic, and lignolytic (Pleurotus ostreatus) activity on carboxymethyl cellulose, oat xylan, and rice straw with different nitrogen sources was evaluated. From the results obtained it was concluded both isolates are capable to produce enzymes necessary for rice straw degradation. However, their production is dependent upon carbon and nitrogen source. Last, it was established that Pleurotus ostreatus T1.1 and Penicillium sp. HC1 capability to colonize and mineralize rice straw, in mono-and co-culture, without affecting nitrogen soil content.
Role of Active and Inactive Cytotoxic Immune Response in Human Immunodeficiency Virus Dynamics

Objectives: Mathematical models can be helpful to understand the complex dynamics of human immunodeficiency virus infection within a host. Most of work has studied the interactions of host responses and virus in the presence of active cytotoxic immune cells, which decay to zero when there is no virus. However, recent research highlights that cytotoxic immune cells can be inactive but never be depleted. Methods: We propose a mathematical model to investigate the human immunodeficiency virus dynamics in the presence of both active and inactive cytotoxic immune cells within a host.We explore the impact of the immune responses on the dynamics of human immunodeficiency virus infection under different disease stages. Results: Standard mathematical and numerical analyses are presented for this new model. Specifically, the basic reproduction number is computed and local and global stability analyses are discussed. Conclusion: Our results can give helpful insights when designing more effective drug schedules in the presence of active and inactive immune responses.
Valuation of a Pre-Revenue Startup: The Case of a Philippine Software Company

Purpose - This study aimed to valuate a pre-revenue software startup in the Philippines by applying various valuation tools. Also, it aimed to verify these tools’ advantages and disadvantages in the context of a pre-revenue startup. Design/Methodology/Approach - The study employed a case study approach. Valuation methods used were the Venture Capital Method, Chicago Method, Development Milestone Method, and Cayenne Consulting Calculator. In performing these methods, quantitative and qualitative data were used. Such data were mostly provided and validated by the company’s executive management or offices. Findings - Based on the comparisons made among the pre-revenue valuation methods, the Chicago Method is determined to be the most recommended method. This method considered various factors relating to where the company is currently, and weighed different scenarios the in which the company could be. Research Implications - Further research on possible strategies for the startup’s sustainability and survivability is recommended. Such strategies may include further evaluating and recalibrating operations, and sourcing capital from angel investors.
