R&D Status of High-current Accelerators at IFP

High-current accelerators have many important applications in Z-pinches, high-power microwaves, and free electron lasers, imploding liners and radiography and so on. Research activities on Zpinches, imploding liners, radiography at the Institute of Fluid Physics (IFP) are introduced. Several main high-current accelerators developed and being developed at IFP are described, such as the Linear Induction Accelerator X-Ray Facility Upgrade (LIAXFU, 12 MeV, 2.5 kA, 90 ns), the Dragon-I linear induction accelerator (20 MeV, 2.5 kA, 60 ns), and the Primary Test Stand for Z-pinch (PTS, 10 MA, 120 ns). The design of Dragon-II linear induction accelerator (20 MeV, 2.5 kA, 3 × 60 ns) to be built will be presented briefly.

Objective: This study evaluated the effects of different levels of protein concentrate supplementation on the growth performance of yak calves, and correlated the growth rate to changes occurring in the plasma- amino acids, -insulin profile, and signaling activity of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) cascade to characterize the mechanism through which the protein synthesis can be improved in early weaned yaks. Methods: For this study, 48 early (3 months old) weaned yak calves were selected, and assigned into four dietary treatments according to randomized complete block design. The four blocks were balanced for body weight and sex. The yaks were either grazed on natural pasture (control diet) in a single herd or the grazing yaks was supplemented with one of the three protein rich supplements containing low (17%; LP), medium (19%; MP), or high (21%; HP) levels of crude proteins for a period of 30 days. Results: Results showed that the average daily gain of calves increased (0.14 vs 0.23-0.26 kg; p<0.05) with protein concentrates supplementation. The concentration of plasma methionine increased (p<0.05; 8.6 vs 10.1-12.4 μmol/L), while those of serine and tyrosine did not change (p>0.05) when the grazing calves were supplemented with protein concentrates. Compared to control diet, the insulin level of calves increased (p<0.05; 1.86 vs 2.16-2.54 μIU/mL) with supplementation of protein concentrates. Addition of protein concentrates up-regulated (p<0.05) expression of mTOR-raptor, mammalian vacuolar protein sorting 34 homolog, the translational regulators eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E binding protein 1, and S6 kinase 1 genes in both Longissimus dorsi and semitendinosus. In contrast, the expression of sequestosome 1 was down-regulated in the concentrate supplemented calves. Conclusion: Our results show that protein supplementation improves the growth performance of early weaned yak calves, and that plasma methionine and insulin concentrations were the key mediator for gene expression and protein deposition in the muscles.
OGLE-2017-BLG-1130: The First Binary Gravitational Microlens Detected from <i>Spitzer</i> Only

<P>We analyze the binary gravitational microlensing event OGLE-2017-BLG-1130 (mass ratio q similar to 0.45), the first published case in which the binary anomaly was detected only by the Spitzer Space Telescope. This event provides strong evidence that some binary signals can be missed by observations from the ground alone but detected by Spitzer. We therefore invert the normal procedure, first finding the lens parameters by fitting the space-based data and then measuring the microlensing parallax using ground-based observations. We also show that the normal four-fold space-based degeneracy in the single-lens case can become a weak eight-fold degeneracy in binary-lens events. Although this degeneracy is resolved in event OGLE-2017-BLG-1130, it might persist in other events.</P>

The purpose of this study was to assess the possibility of using competitive binding experiments with ultrafiltration-HPLC analysis to identify potent xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitors from the Perilla frutescens extract as an attempt to reduce the number of false positive results. To isolate the enzyme-ligand complex from unbound compounds, the P. frutescens extract was either incubated in the absence of XO, in the presence of XO, or with the active site blocked XO before the ultrafiltration was performed. Allopurinaol was used as the XO active site blocker. The unbound compounds were subjected to HPLC analysis. The degree of total binding (TBD) and degree of specific binding (SBD) of each compound were calculated using the peak areas. TBD represents the binding affinities of compounds from the P. frutescens extract for the XO binding site. SBD represents the XO competitive binding between allopurinol and ligands from the extract samples. Two criteria were applied to select putative targets that could help avoid false positives. These include TBD>30% and SBD>10%. Using that approach, kaempferol-3-O-rutinoside, rosmarinic acid, methyl-rosmarinic acid, apigenin, and 4',5,7-trimethoxyflavone were identified, from total 11 compounds, as potent XO inhibitors. Finally, apigenin, 4',5,7-trimethoxyflavone, and luteolin were XO inhibitors verified through an XO inhibition assay and structural simulation of the complex. These results showed that the newly developed strategy has the advantage that the number of targets identified via ultrafiltration-HPLC can be narrowed from many false positives. However, not all false positives can be eliminated with this approach. Some potent inhibitors might also be excluded with the use of this method. The limitations of this method are also discussed herein.

CNTs – TiO 2 ¯lms with di®erent morphology were fabricated on stainless steel substrates throughchemical vapor hydrolysis deposition (CVHD) process and sol – gel process, respectively. Theirmorphology was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electronmicroscopy (TEM). The photocatalytic properties of the ¯lms were tested in the degradation ofmethyl orange by UV light irradiation. The results revealed that TiO 2 nanoparticles could form acontinuous layer on the surface of CNTs through CVHD process. While for sol – gel process, mostTiO 2 nanoparticles were isolated and only a small amount of TiO 2 nanoparticles attached on thesurface of CNTs. And the photocatalytic property of TiO 2 /CNTs ¯lm synthesized throughCVHD process was better than that of TiO 2 /CNTs ¯lms synthesized through sol – gel process. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis illuminated that TiO 2 /CNTs synthesizedthrough CVHD process displayed a smaller resistance than the sample which was synthesizedthrough sol – gel process and certi¯ed that the close combination between TiO 2 and CNTs couldminimize recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes, and thus promote the photo-catalytic property.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The angular distributions of the baryon–antibaryon low-mass enhancements seen in the charmless three-body baryonic <I>B</I> decays <SUP>B+</SUP>→pp¯<SUP>K+</SUP>, <SUP>B0</SUP>→pp¯KS0 and <SUP>B0</SUP>→pΛ¯<SUP>π−</SUP> are reported. A quark fragmentation interpretation is supported, while the gluonic resonance picture is disfavored. Searches for the <SUP>Θ+</SUP> and <SUP>Θ++</SUP> pentaquarks in the relevant decay modes and possible glueball states G with 2.2 GeV/<SUP>c2</SUP><<SUB>Mpp¯</SUB><2.4 GeV/<SUP>c2</SUP> in the pp¯ systems give null results. We set upper limits on the products of branching fractions, B(<SUP>B0</SUP>→<SUP>Θ+</SUP>p¯)B(<SUP>Θ+</SUP>→pKS0)<2.3×<SUP>10−7</SUP>, B(<SUP>B+</SUP>→<SUP>Θ++</SUP>p¯)B(<SUP>Θ++</SUP>→p<SUP>K+</SUP>)<9.1×<SUP>10−8</SUP>, and B(<SUP>B+</SUP>→G<SUP>K+</SUP>)B(G→pp¯)<4.1×<SUP>10−7</SUP> at the 90% confidence level. The analysis is based on a 140 fb<SUP>−1</SUP> data sample recorded on the ϒ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy <SUP>e+</SUP><SUP>e−</SUP> collider.</P>

<P>Arabidopsis ABSCISIC ACID-RESPONSIVE ELEMENT-BINDING FACTOR 3 (ABF3), a bZIP transcription factor, plays an important role in regulating multiple stress responses in plants. Overexpressing AtABF3 increases tolerance to various stresses in several plant species. Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), one of the most important perennial forage crops worldwide, has high yields, high nutritional value, and good palatability and is widely distributed in irrigated and semi-arid regions throughout the world. However, drought and salt stress pose major constraints to alfalfa production. In this study, we developed trans genic alfalfa plants (cv. Xinjiang Daye) expressing AtABF3 under the control of the sweetpotato oxidative stress-inducible SWPA2 promoter (referred to as SAF plants) via Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation. After drought stress treatment, we selected two transgenic lines with high expression of AtABF3, SAF5 and SAFE, for further characterization. Under normal conditions, SAF plants showed smaller leaf size compared to non-transgenic (NT) plants, while no other morphological changes were observed. Moreover, SAF plants exhibited enhanced drought stress tolerance and better growth under drought stress treatment, which was accompanied by a reduced transpiration rate and lower reactive oxygen species contents. In addition, SAF plants showed an increased tolerance to salt and oxidative stress. Therefore, these transgenic AtABF3 alfalfa plants might be useful for breeding forage crops with enhanced tolerance to environmental stress for use in sustainable agriculture on marginal lands.
