Deep Learning Method for Extending Image Intensity Using Hybrid Log-Gamma

The resolution, intensity range and color gamut of the latest display devices such as organic light-emitting diode (OLED) displays have been improved significantly compared to conventional display devices. Regarding the intensity range, the latest display devices can produce a maximum luminous intensity of 1,000 nits or more, which extends the intensity range considerably compared to conventional displays, which have a maximum luminous intensity of approximately 300 nits. In this paper, a deep learning-based image intensity range extension method is studied. The input and target images for deep learning are generated from the high dynamic range (HDR) images, and the target images have an extended intensity range using the Hybrid Log-Gamma (HLG) curve. A modified structure of U-net is proposed to improve the convergence of U-net, and an efficient learning method through the adoption of a structural similarity (SSIM) loss as a loss function is also proposed. The extensive simulations reveal the significantly improved performance of the proposed method.

A shiitake (Lentinus edodes) mushroom has been used for centuries owing to its unique and pleasant flavor in several East Asia. It was cultivated with the wood logs or the mediumbased bag method, but because of the limited supply of hardwood, the specific cultivation conditions, and the long time required, the bag method is now widely used to supply the market with high-quality. A shiitake using the Chinese inoculated medium in Korea is consistently increased, and a geographical origin labeling is becoming an issue for consumers and farmers. Therefore, this study aimed to examine stable isotope ratios features of shiitake using Korean medium, Chinese inoculated-medium, and also compared these with the shiitake directly imported from China. While a discrimination model for geographical identification appeared a classification accuracy of 93.5% for both original and cross-validated sample sets when the shiitake using Chinese inoculated medium was considered as China origin, if considered as Korea origin, the accuracy was decreased to ~80%. Hence, this study suggests the shiitake using the Chinese inoculated medium in Korea would be labeled as “China origin”, and the current origin labeling method depending on duration of medium preparation, inoculation, and cultivation in a specific country was not suitable. Our findings contribute to accurate geographical identification of shiitake mushrooms in Korea, and may extend potential applications in international mushroom markets.
Crosstalk between RNA silencing and RNA quality control in plants

RNAs are pivotal molecules acting as messengers of genetic informationand regulatory molecules for cellular developmentand survival. From birth to death, RNAs face constant cellulardecision for the precise control of cellular function and activity. Most eukaryotic cells employ conserved machineries forRNA decay including RNA silencing and RNA quality control(RQC). In plants, RQC monitors endogenous RNAs and degradesaberrant and dysfunctional species, whereas RNA silencingpromotes RNA degradation to repress the expression ofselected endogenous RNAs or exogenous RNA derived fromtransgenes and virus. Interestingly, emerging evidences haveindicated that RQC and RNA silencing interact with each bysharing target RNAs and regulatory components. Such interactionshould be tightly organized for proper cellular survival. However, it is still elusive that how each machinery specificallyrecognizes target RNAs. In this review, we summarize recentadvances on RNA silencing and RQC pathway and discusspotential mechanisms underlying the interaction betweenthe two machineries.
