        Behaviour and Modeling of the Bearing Capacity of Shear Stud Connectors

        The bearing capacity of shear stud connectors from the simplifi ed design equations in diff erent building codes tends to be underestimated because of a relatively large safety factor. Finite element analysis using ABAQUS was carried out to simulate the force–deformation response of shear stud. The fi nite element model was verifi ed by using push-out tests, and detailed parametric numerical studies were conducted to investigate the force–deformation response of diff erent shear stud confi gurations. A new design equation was derived from linear regression based on the results of the parametric studies. The presented equation shows better agreement with the experimental data. Detailed comparison between the proposed equation and existing design equation in China code for shear stud strength was carried out. The results show signifi cant reduction in the construction cost when the new equation is used.

        Serviceability assessment of subway induced vibration of a frame structure using FEM

        It is necessary to predict subway induced vibration if a new subway is to be built. To obtain the vibration responsereliably, a three-dimensional (3D) FEM model, consisting of the tunnel, the soil, the subway load and the building above, isestablished in MIDAS GTS NX. For this study, it is a six-story frame structure built above line 3 of Guangzhou metro. The entiremodeling process is described in detail, including the simplification of the carriage load and the determination of model parameters. Vibration measurements have been performed on the site of the building and the model is verified with the collected data. Thepredicted and measured vibration response are used together to assess vibration level due to the subway traffic in the building. TheNo.1 building can meet work and residence comfort requirement. This study demonstrates the applicability of the numerical traintunnel-soil-structure model for the serviceability assessment of subway induced vibration and aims to provide practical referencesfor engineering applications.

        Streptococcus pneumoniae aminopeptidase N contributes to bacterial virulence and elicits a strong innate immune response through MAPK and PI3K/AKT signaling

        Streptococcus pneumoniae is a Gram-positive pathogen with high morbidity and mortality globally but some of its pathogenesis remains unknown. Previous research has provided evidence that aminopeptidase N (PepN) is most likely a virulence factor of S. pneumoniae. However, its role in S. pneumoniae virulence and its interaction with the host remains to be confirmed. We generated a pepN gene deficient mutant strain and found that its virulence for mice was significantly attenuated as were in vitro adhesion and invasion of host cells. The PepN protein could induce a strong innate immune response in vivo and in vitro and induced secretion of IL-6 and TNF-α by primary peritoneal macrophages via the rapid phosphorylation of MAPK and PI3K/AKT signaling pathways and this was confirmed using specific pathway inhibitors. In conclusion, PepN is a novel virulence factor that is essential for the virulence of S. pneumoniae and induces host innate immunity via MAPK and PI3K/AKT signaling.

        A numerical study of a self-centring SMA damper

        Many SMA-based dampers were presented and they can show both energy dissipating capability and self-centring property. This paper aims to a self-centring damper composed by two groups of pre-tensioned SMA wires and two precompressed springs. The three-dimensional solid finite element models of the damper are constructed at ANSYS Workbench environment, and the Auricchio’s model is used to simulate the superelastic behaviour of the SMA wires. To simulate the damper assembly process, the models of two springs are compressed and certain pre-tensions are imposed to the SMA wires. The initial stresses for the core components are figured out and imposed to the un-deformed damper. Then, the cyclic loads are imposed to the damper models and the mechanical behaviour of the damper is simulated. The numerical simulation results are compared with the theoretical analysis results based on the Brinson model of the SMA material. For a 1 m long damper with a 5 mm stroke in the case study, both the numerical and theoretical results show that a 35 kN reaction force is offered by the damper. The force-displacement curves of the damper model are flag-shaped, indicating the moderated energy dissipating capacity and full self-centring capability of the damper.

        A Five-step Systematic Therapy for Treating Plugged Ducts and Mastitis in Breastfeeding Women: A Case–Control Study

        Purpose: This study aimed to describe the clinical response to five-step systematic therapy (FSST) in the management of plugged ducts and mastitis. FSST was a comprehensive milk stasis dredging treatment, which contained five steps to make the milk out of the plugged duct. Methods: This retrospective study included 922 breastfeeding women, 714 with plugged ducts, and 208 with mastitis who received FSST from June to September 2017. The breast pain score, swelling degree, and range of breast induration were recorded pre-FSST and post-FSST. Results: After a single FSST, pain score and swelling degree were significantly improved (both p < .001) in all cases. After FSST, the mean breast pain relief score was 1.69 ± 0.70, whereas the mean swelling fade away degree was 1.61 ± 0.62. In the subgroup analysis, pain score and swelling degree were significantly improved (both p < .001) in the plugged ducts group and the mastitis group. The score of pain relief in the plugged ducts group was less than that in the mastitis group (1.63 ± 0.68 vs. 1.91 ± 0.70, t = 5.30; p < .001), whereas improvement of swelling fade away was greater in the plugged ducts group than the mastitis group (1.65 ± 0.64 vs. 1.48 ± 0.56, t = 3.49; p = .001). The composition ratio of changes in induration range between the two groups was statistically different (Pearson c2 = 137.87, p < .001), of which more obvious improvement in the plugged ducts group than the mastitis group (c2 = 25.65, p < .001). Conclusion: FSST can relieve pain, reduce breast swelling and range of induration, and for plugged ducts or mastitis varied degree differently
