Anchorage Performance of Headed Deformed Bars in Exterior Beam-Column Joints Under Cyclic Loading
Yu-Chen Ou,Hana Astrid Canseco,Dimas P. Kurniawan 대한토목학회 2017 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.21 No.7
The anchorage performance of headed deformed bars anchored in inter-story exterior beam-column joints under cyclic load was examined based on a test database with 118 test data. A proposed performance index based on the ACI 318 development length equation was used to evaluate the anchorage performance of the headed deformed bars of the specimens in the database. The results of the evaluation showed that the anchorage performance was positively correlated with the axial load, amount of joint transverse reinforcement parallel to the direction of applied shear, and head bearing area ratio, and was negatively correlated with the clear bar spacing and column moment ratio. Based on the evaluation, limits on design parameters (i.e., the minimum clear bar spacing, head bearing area ratio, concrete and steel strengths) were proposed. It was found that all the specimens in the test database showed satisfactory seismic performance if they satisfied the development length equation of the ACI 318 code and the proposed limits on design parameters.
Seismic Performance of Concrete Columns with Innovative Seven- and Eleven-Spiral Reinforcement
Ou, Yu-Chen,Ngo, Si-Huy,Roh, Hwasung,Yin, Samuel Y.,Wang, Jui-Chen,Wang, Ping-Hsiung American Concrete Institute 2015 ACI structural journal Vol.112 No.5
<p>This research proposes innovative seven- and 11-spiral transverse reinforcement to replace two- and six-spiral reinforcement, respectively, to decrease spiral size to address the issue of spiral fabrication in large columns. Moreover, this research proposes using large reinforcing bars or H-shaped steel as longitudinal reinforcement to reduce the potential of reinforcing bar cage failure. The objectives of this research were to investigate the seismic performance of seven- and 11-spiral columns and the effect of using large reinforcing bars and H-shape steel as longitudinal reinforcement. Cyclic tests of columns showed that seven- and 11-spiral columns, even with less amounts of transverse reinforcement, exhibited higher ductility capacities than tied columns. The use of H-shaped steel as longitudinal reinforcement increased ductility and energy dissipation of the column. Among ACI 318, Caltrans BDS, and Caltrans SDC methods to estimate probable moment strength, only the Caltrans SDC method produced conservative results for all columns examined.</p>
Plastic hinge length of circular reinforced concrete columns
Yu-Chen Ou,Raditya Andy Kurniawan,Dimas Pramudya Kurniawan,Nguyen Dang Nguyen 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2012 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.10 No.6
This paper presents a parametric study of the plastic hinge length of circular reinforced concrete columns using a three-dimensional finite element analysis method, and using the Taguchi robust design method to reduce computational cost. Parameters examined include the longitudinal reinforcing ratio, the shear span-to-depth ratio, the axial force ratio and the concrete compressive strength. The study considers longitudinal reinforcement with yield strengths of 414 MPa and 685 MPa, and proposes simplified formulas for the plastic hinge length of circular reinforced concrete columns, showing that increases in plastic hinge length correlate to increases in the axial load, longitudinal reinforcing and shear span-todepth ratios. As concrete strength increases, the plastic hinge length decreases for the 414 MPa case but increases for the 685 MPa case.

<P>Diabetes was associated with a 26% increased risk of death from any cancer in Asians. The pattern of associations with specific cancers suggests the need for better control (prevention, detection, management) of the growing epidemic of diabetes (as well as obesity), in order to reduce cancer mortality.</P>

Finite element analysis based on solid elements can be used in the seismic analysis of integrated nuclear containment systems, which include structural components (nuclear containment building) and non-structural components (reactor vessel, steam generator, etc.). However, this solid element based FE modeling requires long computational times or high costs to acquire the analysis results; this is due to the large number of nodes and the resulting large matrix during the integration and assembly of all elements. These long computational times present several difficulties for seismic engineers in the preliminary design steps since the large number of earthquake data are used in the analysis and several design parameters need be changed. This paper presents a new simplified modeling technique for an integrated nuclear containment system, named “frequency adaptive Lumped Mass Stick (LMS) model”. This technique consists of a smaller number of stick elements and lumped masses, and it determines the amount of lumped masses to be identical to the frequencies of the original or actual structures. The frequency adaptive LMS modeling technique is applied to all structural and non-structural components of the nuclear containment building system. The integrated system is obtained considering the connecting boundary conditions of each component. Seismic analysis of the integrated system is performed using the simplified model and the results are compared to those of the solid based finite element model.

Twelve pieces of longissimus dorsi were processed into Chinese traditional dry-cured loins. The changes in the proteolylic enzymes activities, myofibrillar proteins degradation, and free amino acids content were investigated during processing. Compared with fresh piece (0 day), the cathepsin B ? L and calpains activities decreased after dry-curing and maintained potential activities values of 23.25 and 15.04% in the final products, respectively. The myosin heavy chain (MHC) and C protein were intensely degraded at the dry-ripened stage; the 50 kDa desmin increased at day 2 and then disappeared at day 11. The total free amino acids content increased from 333.18 mg/100 g in the raw to 1096.54 mg/100 g at the end of the dry-ripening. This work provided a mechanism for the accumulation of free amino acids and predicted the proteolysis extent of myofibrillar proteins by monitoring the changes of three marker proteins (MHC, C protein and 50 kDa desmin) during Chinese traditional dry-cured loins processing. <P>Estrogen receptor α (ERα) plays critical roles in development and progression of breast cancer. Because ERα activity is strictly dependent upon the interaction with coregulators, coregulators are also believed to contribute to breast tumorigenesis. Cell Cycle and Apoptosis Regulator 1 (CCAR1) is an important co-activator for estrogen-induced gene expression and estrogen-dependent growth of breast cancer cells. Here, we identified Deleted in Breast Cancer 1 (DBC1) as a CCAR1 binding protein. DBC1 was recently shown to function as a negative regulator of the NAD-dependent protein deacetylase SIRT1. DBC1 associates directly with ERα and cooperates synergistically with CCAR1 to enhance ERα function. DBC1 is required for estrogen-induced expression of a subset of ERα target genes as well as breast cancer cell proliferation and for estrogen-induced recruitment of ERα to the target promoters in a gene-specific manner. The mechanism of DBC1 action involves inhibition of SIRT1 interaction with ERα and of SIRT1-mediated deacetylation of ERα. SIRT1 also represses the co-activator synergy between DBC1 and CCAR1 by binding to DBC1 and disrupting its interaction with CCAR1. Our results indicate that DBC1 and SIRT1 play reciprocal roles as major regulators of ERα activity, by regulating DNA binding by ERα and by regulating co-activator synergy.</P>

Background: Evidence for associations between dietary factors and breast cancer risk is inconclusive among Chinese females. To evaluate this question, we conducted a systematic review of relevant case-control and cohort studies. Methods: Studies were systematically searched among 5 English databases (PudMed, ScienceDirect, Wiley, Clinicaltrials.gov, and Cochrane) and 3 Chinese databases (CNKI, WanFang, and VIP) until November 2012. Random effects models were used to estimate summary odds ratios (ORs) and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Thirty one case-control studies and two cohort studies involving 9,299 cases and 11,413 controls were included. Consumption of both soy and fruit was significantly associated with decreased risk of breast cancer, with summary ORs of 0.65 (95% CIs: 0.43-0.99; I2=88.9%, P<0.001; N=13) and 0.66 (95% CIs: 0.47-0.91; $I^2$=76.7%, P<0.001; N=7), respectively. Consumption of fat was significantly associated with increased risk of breast cancer (OR=1.36; 95% CIs: 1.13-1.63; $I^2$=47.9%, P=0.088; N=6). There was nonsignificant association between consumption of vegetables and breast cancer risk (OR=0.72; 95% CIs: 0.51-1.02; $I^2$= 74.4%, P<0.001; N=9). However, sensitivity analysis based on adjusted ORs showed decreased risk of breast cancer was also associated with consumption of vegetables (OR=0.49; 95% CIs: 0.30-0.67). Conclusion: Both soy food and fruit are significantly associated with decreased risk of breast cancer among Chinese females, and vegetables also seems to be protective while dietary fatexerts a promoting influence.
