<P><B>Turning many into one</B></P><P>Single-crystal metal foils are valuable for their surface properties that allow for synthesis of materials like graphene. Jin <I>et al.</I> present a strategy for creating colossal single-crystal metal foils called “contact-free annealing” (see the Perspective by Rollett). The method relies on hanging and heating commercially available, inexpensive, cold-rolled metal foils. Almost as if by magic, the polycrystalline grains rotate and anneal into a large single-crystal sheet with a specific crystal orientation. The strategy allows for the creation of much larger and much cheaper single-crystal metal foils.</P><P><I>Science</I>, this issue p. 1021; see also p. 996</P><P>Single-crystal metals have distinctive properties owing to the absence of grain boundaries and strong anisotropy. Commercial single-crystal metals are usually synthesized by bulk crystal growth or by deposition of thin films onto substrates, and they are expensive and small. We prepared extremely large single-crystal metal foils by “contact-free annealing” from commercial polycrystalline foils. The colossal grain growth (up to 32 square centimeters) is achieved by minimizing contact stresses, resulting in a preferred in-plane and out-of-plane crystal orientation, and is driven by surface energy minimization during the rotation of the crystal lattice followed by “consumption” of neighboring grains. Industrial-scale production of single-crystal metal foils is possible as a result of this discovery.</P>
항만 환경의 음영지역 극복을 위한 동선 정보 기반의 측위 기법

다변측량법은 위치가 알려진 3개 이상의 지점으로부터 대상까지의 거리 정보를 바탕으로 대상의 위치를 계산하는 기법이다. Real Time Locating Systems (RTLS) 에서는 대상의 위치를 파악하기 위해 다변측량 기법을 주로 사용하는데, 이를 위해서는 리더와 대상과의 거리 정보가 3개 이상 필요하다. 그러나 항만환경처럼 시설물 설치가 어렵고 장애물도 많은 넓은 지역에서는 음영지역이 다수 존재하여 이러한 조건을 항상 만족시키기 어렵다. 본 논문에서는 다변측량이 불가능한 적은 수의 거리 정보만으로 대상의 위치를 파악할 수 있도록 대상의 동선 정보를 이용하는 동선 정보 기반의 측위 기법을 제안한다. 성능 평가 결과 최소자승법만을 사용했을 때보다 평균 측위 오차가 약 3m, 표준 편차가 6m 줄었으며, 측위 성공률이 4.6배 이상 높아졌다.

To study neurobehavioral effects for manganese fume exposure of welders, we administrated questionnaire about subjective symptom, related with manganese exposure. Neurobehavioral Core Test Battery of World Health Organization(NCTB) and finger tapping for 98 welders and 29 non-welding workers. We adopted welding duration as a criterion for exposure assessment, because of the lack of the longitudinal valid data and differences in airborne concentrations of manganese in welding types, such as shielded metal arc and CO2 arc welding. Neurologic, musculoskeletal and concentration symptoms were significantly increased by increase of welding duration. Performance of finger tapping preferred hand, Santa Ana dexterity test preferred hand and correct number of pursuit aiming were significantly decreased by increase of welding duration. These results comparable with previous studies that suggest neurobehavioral test, especially motor test, to be an appropriate tool to detect early neurobehavioral abnormalities related with manganeses exposure.
Epidemiology of PAH in Korea: An Analysis of the National Health Insurance Data, 2002–2018

Background and Objectives: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a rare but fatal disease. Recent advances in PAH-specific drugs have improved its outcomes, although the healthcare burden of novel therapeutics may lead to a discrepancy in outcomes between developing and developed countries. We analyzed how the epidemiology and clinical features of PAH has changed through the rapidly advancing healthcare infrastructure in South Korea. Methods: PAH was defined according to a newly devised 3-component algorithm. Using a nationwide health insurance claims database, we delineated annual trends in the prevalence, incidence, medication prescription pattern, and 5-year survival of PAH in Korea. Cumulative survival and potential predictors of mortality were also assessed among 2,151 incident PAH cases. Results: Between 2002 or 2004 and 2018, the prevalence and incidence of PAH increased 75-fold (0.4 to 29.9 per million people) and 12-fold (0.5 to 6.3 per million person-years), respectively. The proportion of patients on combination PAH-specific drug therapy has also steadily increased up to 29.0% in 2018. Among 2,151 incident PAH cases (median [interquartile range] age, 50 [37–62] years; 67.2% female), the 5-year survival rate and median survival duration were 71.8% and 13.1 years, respectively. Independent predictors of mortality were age, sex, etiology of PAH, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and chronic kidney disease. Conclusions: This nationwide study delineated that the prevalence and incidence of PAH have grown rapidly in Korea since the early 2000s. The use of combination therapy has also increased, and the 5-year survival rate of PAH in Korea was similar to those in western countries.

Synthesis of north-5′-methylbicyclo[3.1.0]hexyl adenine and hypoxanthine nucleosides with an ethenyl group at C3′ position was successfully achieved by a highly facile method. Methylbicyclo[3.1.0]hexanone (±)-7 with three contiguous chiral centers and its epimer (±)-6 was remarkably simply constructed only by four steps involving a carbenoid insertion reaction in the presence of rhodium (II) acetate dimer as a metal catalyst, giving a correct relative stereochemistry of the generated three chiral centers. Due to steric hindrance from the concave face of the bicyclo[3.1.0]hexanone system, a Grignard reaction of (±)-7 with ethenylmagnesium bromide showed exclusive diastereoselectivity towards the b-face. The Grignard reaction chemoselectively proceeded without reacting with ester functionality. Coupling reaction of glycosyl donor (±)-11 with 6-chloropurine nucleobase afforded only the desired N9-alkylated nucleoside without the formation of N7-regioisomer. By the conventional method, 6-chloro group was converted into 6-amino and 6-hydroxy groups to give the desired adenine and hypoxanthine bicyclo[3.1.0]hexyl carbanucleosides with 3′-ethenyl group, respectively.
