We investigated habitat characteristics of a Korean endangered species, the flying squirrel Pteromys volans, in the Odaesan National Park (ONP) using GIS. GPS coordinates of the P. volanstraces and eleven environmental factors were used for the GIS analysis. According to our results, high traces of P. volanshave been found in coniferous forests with high density crown and more than 4th-age class with middle DBH. The traces were more frequently discovered in a little lower elevation (749m) than mean elevation (901.4m) of the ONP and a little lower steepness (18.2°) than average steepness (22.1°) of the ONP. The traces were more frequently found in range of 0-200m from stream and 0-400m from road and agricultural area, but infrequently in range of 0-400m from human residential area.
Analysis of eco-corridor usage status of mammals in Odaesan National Park

We investigated species, ecological pathway type, and mammal size using two eco-tunnels from trail-camera data. The analyses of the camera data showed that 12 mammalian species from 8 families of 5 orders used Jin-gogae eco-corridor (bridge type) and 14 mammalian species from 9 family 5 orders were found at Odaesan eco-corridor (tunnel type). At both eco-corridors, water deer used eco-corridor most frequently, and then secondly racoon dog did. The analyses by mammal size (small, medium, and large) showed that large-sized mammals were found in high ratio at the bridge type of the eco-corridors. In case of medium-sized mammals, utilization ratio of the tunnel-typed corridor was 42%, whereas that of the bridge-typed corridor was 24%, showing 1.8 times higher usage.

We obtained a total of 36 GPS coordinates of the seven bat species of Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, Myotis ikonnikovi, M. nattereri, M. petax, Murina ussuriensis, Plecotus auritus, and Pipistrellus abramus. Characteristics of forests (forest type, age class, DBH class and crown density), terrain (aspect, slope and distance from mountain stream) and disturbance factors (distance from human residential areas and distance from cultivated areas) that bats have used as their habitats were revealed from the GIS analysis based on GPS coordinates of the 36 positions that bats were found. The bats-preferred forest type is broad-leaf forests (43%) with the trees of the 2th (31%) and 5th (31%) age class, the trees of sapling (36%) and large DBH class (31%), and sparse crown density (67%). Bats prefer the slop direction of the east (39%), the gradient below $15^{\circ}$ (61%), the ranges within 200 m from the mountain streams (92%), the ranges within 200 m near roads (89%), the ranges of 200-400 m from human residential areas (28%), and the ranges within 200 m from cultivated areas (36%).

We analyzed activity patterns of wild boars in Wangpicheon Ecological Landscape Protected Area using trail-camera. According to the data analyses, total 338 valid pictures were collected. Monthly activity analysis of wild boars showed that the wild boar pictures were collected most frequently in August whose 93 pictures were taken. In the analyses of seasons, the wild boar pictures were most frequently taken in summer with 170 pictures of wild boar than the other seasons. According to daily activity of wild boars, pictures of wild boars were frequently taken at both sunrise and sunset time zone, with more pictures taken at sunset than sunset.
Leakage of Cellular Materials from Saccharomyces cerevisiae by Ohmic Heating

The ohmic heating of foods for sterilization provides a shorter come-up time compared to conventional thermal processes. The electric fields as well as the heat generated by ohmic heating facilitate germicidal effects. In the present study, the effect of ohmic heating on the structure and permeability of the cell membrane of yeast cells, Saccharomyces cerevisae, isolated from Takju (a traditional Korean rice-beer), was investigated. The ohmic heating was found to translocate intracellular protein materials out of the cell wall, and the amount of exuded protein increased significantly as the electric field increased from 10 to 20 V/cm. As higher frequencies were applied, more materials were exuded. Compared to conventional heating, more amounts of proteins and nucleic acids were exuded when these cells were treated with ohmic heating. The molecular weights of the major exuded proteins ranged from 4 kDa to 18 kDa, as analyzed by Tricine-SDS PAGE. A TEM study also confirmed the leakage of cellular materials, thus indicating irreversible damage to the cell wall by ohmic heating. It was, therefore, concluded that the electric fields generated by ohmic heating induced electroporation, causing irreversible damage to the yeast cell wall and promoting the translocation of intracellular materials.
A Case of Primary hyperparathyroidism with concomitant Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma

Primary hyperparathyroidism and concomitant thyroid cancer is a rare disorder. Primary hyperparathyroidism is usually caused by a parathyroid adenoma, occasionally by primary parathyroid hyperplasia and rarely by parathyroid carcinoma. An association between hyperparathyroidism and well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma has been reported in many studies, but they concluded that the association between hyperparathyroidism and well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma may be coincidental. We encountered a case of primary hyperparathyroidism with concomitant papillary thyroid carcinoma. A 50-year-old female patient presented with tingling sensation, shoulder pain, muscular weakness, increased levels of serum calcium and parathyroid hormone. Ultrasonography of neck showed hypoechoic mass at left infrathyroidal region and two thyroid nodules at both thyroid lobes. Tc99m-methyl isobutyl isonitrile parathyroid scan revealed a focal hot nodule at left infrathyroidal region on both early and delayed phase. Ultrasonogram guided fine needle aspiration of left thyroid nodule was positive for papillary carcinoma later verified by postoperative histopathology. She underwent surgery at Keimyung University DongSan Medical Center and was diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism and concomitant papillary thyroid carcinoma. This case underlines the need for a clinical high index of suspicion for synchronous primary hyperparathyroidism and thyroid cancer. Consequently, we suggest evaluation for concomitant thyroid malignancy including a fine needle aspiration in case with primary hyperparathyroidism coexisting with suspicious nodule in thyroid gland.
