Microstructure of hypereutectic Al-17wt.% Si alloy, fabricated by mechanical stirring and by reheating at semi-solid state, was investigated by optical microscope. Flow behavior semi-solid metal also was investigated at diffentent mould temperatures 280℃, 290℃ and 300℃ . Size of silicon particles were increased over 100㎛ durig solidification as a result of stirring. It is considered as microstructural coarsening by bonding between neighbouring primary silicon particles during stirring of slurry. In case of reheating at semi-state, however, primary silicon particle was not increased at size of 40㎛ and nearly spherical aluminum solde particle also was improved when solid fraction was 0.7 at mould temperature of 300℃ than other conditions.

In this study, microstructure, size of primary α, solid fraction and hardness of A356 Al alloy were investigated. Semi-solid A356 alloys were obtained by semi-solid continuous casting apparatus consists of melting furnace, formation apparatus of granular primary α and continuous casting apparatus. Size of primary α and solid fraction were decreased with decreasing temperature, and with increasing volume of cooling water. At the cooling water temperature of 15℃ and cooling water volume of 18.2ℓ/min, the sizes of primary α phases were decreased up to 40㎛, and fraction solid was 0.68.

한국산 왕잠자리 상과(Superfamily Aeshnoidea) 곤충의 성충에 대해서는 Okumura(1937), Asahina(1939), Cho(1969), Obana(1972), Miyazaki(1986) 등에 의해 현재까지 2과 17속 33종이 기록되어 왔으나 유충에 대해서는 거의 그 기록을 찾아볼 수 없다. 뿐만 아니라 성충에 대한 다수의 기록종 역시 국내외 문헌의 분포난에서만 언급되어 있는 경우가 많아 정밀한 검사가 요구되어왔다. 본 연구는 1971년 9월부터 1989년 6월까지 남한의 173여개 지역에서 채집된 유충표본과, 실험실 사육에서 얻어진 성충표본의 동정 및 분류를 통해 총 2과 15속 22종을 확인하고 이 결과를 재정리하였다. Thirty three species of Aeshnoidea have been described from Korea in their adult stages. Larvae of twenty two species collected in South Korea including an uncertain species Anax KUa are described and figured in this paper. Described genera are following; Anisegomphus, Stylurus, Gomphus, Burmagomphus, Trigomphus, Davidius, Onychogomphus, Ophiogomphus, Nihonogomphus, Sieboldius, Gomphidia, and Ictinogomphus in Gomphidae; Aeschnophlebia, Aeshna, and Anax in Aeshnidae.

Design equations for the most commonly used ferroresonant regulators and regulated rectifiers are derived. Expressions relating the physical size of the components and the short circuit characteristic of the circuit to the output power, frequency, input power factor, and voltage levels are developed. From these expressions, design equations that optimize the design are obtained and specific component values are suggested.

As negative regulators of cytokine signaling pathways, suppressors of cytokine signaling (SOCS) proteins have been reported to possess both pro-tumor and anti-tumor functions. Our recent studies have demonstrated suppressive effects of SOCS1 on epithelial to mesenchymal signaling in colorectal cancer cells in response to fractionated ionizing radiation or oxidative stress. The objective of the present study was to determine the radio-sensitizing action of SOCS1 as an anti-tumor mechanism in colorectal cancer cell model. In HCT116 cells exposed to ionizing radiation, SOCS1 over-expression shifted cell cycle arrest from G2/M to G1 and promoted radiation-induced apoptosis in a p53-dependent manner with down-regulation of cyclin B and up-regulation of p21. On the other hand, SOCS1 knock-down resulted in a reduced apoptosis with a decrease in G1 arrest. The regulatory action of SOCS1 on the radiation response was mediated by inhibition of radiation-induced Jak3/STAT3 and Erk activities, thereby blocking G1 to S transition. Radiation-induced early ROS signal was responsible for the activation of Jak3/Erk/STAT3 that led to cell survival response. Our data collectively indicate that SOCS1 can promote radiosensitivity of colorectal cancer cells by counteracting ROS-mediated survival signal, thereby blocking cell cycle progression from G1 to S. The resulting increase in G1 arrest with p53 activation then contributes to the promotion of apoptotic response upon radiation. Thus, induction of SOCS1 expression may increase therapeutic efficacy of radiation in tumors with low SOCS1 levels. [BMB Reports 2022; 55(4): 198-203]
Change in the diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease: a hospital-based cohort study from Korea

Background/Aims: Accurately diagnosing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remains a challenge, but is crucial for providing proper management for affected patients. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the frequency of change in diagnosis in Korean patients who were referred to our institution with a diagnosis of IBD. Methods: We enrolled 1,444 patients diagnosed with ulcerative colitis (UC) and 1,452 diagnosed with Crohn’s disease (CD), who had been referred to the Asan Medical Center between January 2010 and December 2014. These patients were assessed and subsequently classified as having UC, CD, indeterminate colitis, possible IBD, or non-IBD. Results: During a median follow-up of 15.9 months, 400 of the 2,896 patients (13.8%) analyzed in this study experienced a change in diagnosis. A change in diagnosis from UC to CD, or vice-versa, was made in 24 of 1,444 patients (1.7%) and 23 of 1,452 patients (1.6%), respectively. A change to a non-IBD diagnosis was the most common modification; 7.5% (108 of 1444) and 12.7% (184 of 1452) of the patients with a referral diagnosis of UC and CD, respectively, were reclassified as having non-IBD. Among the 292 patients who were ultimately determined not to have IBD, 135 (55 UC and 80 CD cases) had received IBD-related medication. Conclusions: There are diagnostic uncertainties and difficulties in relation to IBD. Therefore, precise assessment and systematic follow-up are essential in the management of this condition.

<P>The aim of this study was to evaluate the treatment outcomes of stereotactic body radiation therapy for treating primary or metastatic thoracic tumors using a stereotactic body frame. Between January 1998 and February 2004, 101 lesions from 91 patients with thoracic tumors were prospectively reviewed. A dose of 10–12 Gy per fraction was given three to four times over consecutive days to a total dose of 30–48 Gy (median 40 Gy). The overall response rate was 82%, with 20 (22%) complete responses and 55 (60%) partial responses. The one- and two-year local progression free survival rates were 90% and 81%, respectively. The patients who received 48 Gy showed a better local tumor control than those who received less than 48 Gy (Fisher exact test; p = 0.004). No pulmonary complications greater than a RTOG toxicity criteria grade 2 were observed. The experience of stereotactic body frame based radiation therapy appears to be a safe and promising treatment modality for the local management of primary or metastatic lung tumors. The optimal total dose, fractionation schedule and treatment volume need to be determined after a further follow-up of these results.</P>
