A Conceptual Framework for Comprehending the Spatial and Communication Layers in R & D Laboratories
Yoo, Uoo Sang Architectural Institute of Korea 2005 Architectural research Vol.7 No.2
This study discusses "mechanisms" in a research facility, specifically focusing on the question of how we can understand what happens in the physical environment and the communication between researchers. This study attempts to address this question by examining two physical settings, before and after the move of one research-educational facility, the Institute of Paper Science and Technology. The objective of the study is to suggest conceptual models to comprehend the relationships between spatial layouts and communication. The study examines the underlying mechanism of how the levels of communication meet the layers of spatial structure. The paper has four parts. First, the preceding studies will be reviewed evoking some issues of communication and physical setting in research facilities. Second a conceptual typology in office plan will be developed providing a theoretical framework to review the spatial organization of the subject research facility, the Institute of Paper Science and Technology (IPST). Third, the spatial organization of the former building (before the move) and the present building (after the move) of IPST will be analyzed. Finally, conceptual models of the mechanism between the communication and the spatial organization will be drawn up.

The purpose of this study is to find out the types and characteristics of the spatial structure of traditional villages in Suzhou, Zhejiang Province, China. Focusing on the road space of 14 traditional villages located in Suzhou, the study conducted a basic analyses on spatial structure of the villages using Axial Map Analysis developed by B. Hillier and J. Hanson. First, through literature review, the historical changes of 14 traditional villages in Suzhou were summarized. Second, by using the method of spatial syntax, village types were classified targeting road spaces in villages and their spatial structural characteristics were analyzed. Third, the spatial structure centered on the roads of 14 villages was compared by type through comparative analysis.

Korean traditional architecture studies have mostly been focused on the sight from outside such as layout of buildings and formal elements of elevation. Consequently, studies regarding residents’ sense of space within residential compound and the sight from the inside to the other building were rare. This study, therefore, aims at seeking for the hierarchical structure according to residents’ gender and status and finding the social and spatial meaning in Korean traditional residence. This study attempts to relate the physical elements to the relatively abstract and subjective “Landscape Interaction” through examinations of sight direction and range within Korean traditional house compound. This study looks into two renowned Korean tradition residences; Chunghyodang in Hahoe and the Head House of Kim Clan in Eusung.

The present study explored the applicability of Visibility Graph Analysis (VGA) techniques to workplace design research. Six types of VGA measures in Depthmap encompassing visual connectivity, three types of visual integration, mean depth, and visual entropy were employed for the analysis of individual privacy for task concentration and group relationship behavior in the open-plan office environment. Data comprised 136 workers in 6 open-plan offices filled with low-paneled (1.2-1.5m) cubicle workspaces. For the statistical analysis, Spearman’s rho correlations and t-tests were applied for the spatial and behavioral measures. The results showed that workspace VGA measures have a potential to be useful information to account for workers’ concentration privacy and, limitedly, also informal relationships with team members. Visual entropy values especially offer reliable information to predict various aspects of office workers’ privacy behavior while visual integration can be used to account for the workers’ sense of trust in group relations. The study also discussed the limitation of VGA applications to the workplace context.

A Study on the Sustainability in Urban Planning Theory -Focusing on Decentralized Concentration-
Lee Hyun Jun,Yoo Uoo Sang 국제온돌학회 2013 International Journal of Ondol Vol.6 No.1
Environmental problem due to environmental pollution and C02 emission has brought a strong attention on issues of sustainable urban development in urban planning area. Many urban planning researches have been argued that 'decentralized concentration' is one of the key issues for the sustainable urban spatial structure. Decentralized city is to create sustainable urban structure by realizing the supply system for urban energy efficiency through restriction of car use, proper urban density, and mixed-use. This study aims at exploring the concept of 'decentralized concentration' and comparing its characteristics of 'decentralized concentration' urban structure found in urban planning theories.
