Continuing population growth and climate shift worldwide has introduced additional risks to our civilization. Our team set out to confront the risk of potential malnutrition of future generations. We have developed a system that utilizes sustainable energy for the purpose of agriculture. Our system utilizes sunlight radiation for energy storing based on a model that incorporates governmental irradiation forecast data. This energy is then used to supplement plant growth. Energy conservation and storage is assisted by an on-site battery that utilizes a method of conservation estimate to accommodate the ever-changing weather conditions which allows for powering the LED light units for plant irradiation. This paper talks about the determination method of a battery SOC (State of Charge) and the simplification of the process based on experiments conducted with a Nickel-Hydrogen battery unit.
Hydrolysis of Biopex-R-allografts cement and the osteoblastic response to the cement

A composite of clinically used Biopex-R and allografts was hydrolyzed in calf serum to obtain hydroxyapatite (HAP), while Biopex-R was hydrolyzed in calf serum to obtain octacalcium phosphate (OCP) and HAP. The products from Biopex-Rallografts composite as well as the Biopex-R exhibited rough surfaces. After the hydrolysis, MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured on the Biopex-R-allografts composite. Adherence of cells on Biopex-R-allografts composite is greater in number than on the Biopex-R. The composition of the resulting products affected the cell growth.

Global population growth and the ongoing climate crisis pose immense risk to the stable food supplies in the future. We have developed a small hydroponic plant cultivation system to ensure even in extreme circumstances. To build a sustainable system, we have utilized an LED lighting system together with conserved energy generated by sunlight. Such hydroponic plant cultivation systems have to operate at an affordable yet efficient principle. In this paper, we examine experimental results of the relationship between LED energy consumption and plant growth in a hydroponic plant cultivation system. LED light intensity directly correlates to electrical power consumed. Energy consumption is the result of electrical power consumed over a period of time. Three experiments with varying conditions utilizing constant electrical energy consumption were conducted. Case-1: Electric power is kept low and the lighting duration is long; Case-2: the electric power is set to medium and the lighting duration is medium; Case-3: the electric power is large and the lighting duration is short. As a result of evaluating the weight of grown lettuces, it was found that lettuce growth is excellent in Case-1. It means that the longer the LED irradiation duration, the better the plant growth even under the same energy consumption conditions.
Longer prolapsed rectum length increases recurrence risk after Delorme’s procedure

Purpose: Risk factors for recurrence of rectal prolapse after surgery remain unclear. Delorme’s procedure is often selected for relatively small-sized rectal prolapse, but there are few reports discussing the association between prolapsed rectum length and prolapse recurrence after Delorme’s procedure. We hypothesized that patients with longer rectal prolapses are at a higher risk of recurrence after Delorme’s procedure. Methods: The study population comprised patients with rectal prolapse who underwent Delorme’s procedure between January 2014 and December 2019 at Tokyo Yamate Medical Center. We extracted data on patient age, sex, body mass index, previous history of anal surgery, previous history of surgery for rectal prolapse, and length of prolapse, to identify risk factors for prolapse recurrence. Results: Altogether, 96 patients were eligible for analysis. The median length of the prolapsed rectum was 3.0 cm (range, 1.0–6.6 cm). Twenty-four patients (25.0%) experienced recurrence after Delorme’s procedure after a median of 7.5 months (interquartile range, 3.2–20.9 months). Multivariate analysis revealed that longer prolapsed rectum length increased the risk of recurrence after Delorme’s procedure (hazard ratio, 6.28; 95% confidence interval, 1.83–21.50; P<0.001). Conclusion: The length of the prolapsed rectum should be measured before Delorme’s procedure for rectal prolapse, because length is associated with a risk of recurrence after the surgery.

The objectives of the present study were to evaluate theanatomic localization of porcine reproductive andrespiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) in naturally infectedpigs and to determine whether oral fluid could be used todetect the virus in infected animals. Two sows, seven2-month-old grower pigs, and 70 6-month-old gilts wereincluded in this study. PRRSV in sera and oral fluid wereidentified by nested reverse transcription PCR (nRT-PCR)while lung, tonsil, and tissue associated with oral cavity weresubjected to nRT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, and in situhybridization. In sows, PRRSV was identified in oral fluidand tonsils. PRRSV was also detected in oral fluid, tonsils,salivary glands, oral mucosa, and lungs of all seven growerpigs. However, viremia was observed in only two growerpigs. Double staining revealed that PRRSV was distributedin macrophages within and adjacent to the tonsillar cryptepithelium. In gilts, the North American type PRRSV fieldstrain was detected 3 to 8 weeks after introducing theseanimals onto the farm. These results confirm previousfindings that PRRSV primarily replicates in tonsils and isthen shed into oral fluid. Therefore, oral fluid sampling maybe effective for the surveillance of PRRSV in breeding herds.
Impact of sarcopenia on biliary drainage during neoadjuvant therapy for pancreatic cancer

Background/Aims: Since the usefulness of neoadjuvant chemo(radiation) therapy (NAT) for pancreatic cancer has been demonstrated, recurrent biliary obstruction (RBO) in patients with pancreatic cancer with a fully covered self-expandable metal stent (FCSEMS) during NAT is expected to increase. This study investigated the impact of sarcopenia on RBO in this setting. Methods: Patients were divided into normal and low skeletal muscle index (SMI) groups and retrospectively analyzed. Patient characteristics, overall survival, time to RBO (TRBO), stent-related adverse events, and postoperative complications were compared between the two groups. A Cox proportional hazard model was used to identify the risk factors for short TRBO. Results: A few significant differences were observed in patient characteristics, overall survival, stent-related adverse events, and postoperative complications between 38 patients in the normal SMI group and 17 in the low SMI group. The median TRBO was not reached in the normal SMI group and was 112 days in the low SMI group (p=0.004). In multivariate analysis, low SMI was the only risk factor for short TRBO, with a hazard ratio of 5.707 (95% confidence interval, 1.148–28.381; p=0.033). Conclusions: Sarcopenia was identified as an independent risk factor for RBO in patients with pancreatic cancer with FCSEMS during NAT.
A Senior High School Chemistry Laboratory Class Observed by University Students

Upon request from the Tokushima Prefectural Senior High School of Science and Technology, two faculty staff members and eight students of The University of Tokushima visited the high school and set up a chemistry laboratory class for 59 students. Since the participating senior high school students were freshmen, four simple, safe and visual experiments were selected: 1) Water purification, 2) Surface modification, 3) Briggs-Rauscher reaction, and 4) Polymer synthesis and characterization. All experiments received a favorable reception as a follow-up questionnaire verified. Since the high school students enjoyed the experiments it is hoped that the results will strengthen the students' interest in chemistry. It was good opportunity for the observers; they recognized the difficulty of teaching students.
