Summer behavior of the Changjiang diluted water to the East/Japan Sea: A modeling study in 2003

The summer behavior of Changjiang diluted water (CDW) toward the East/Japan Sea (EJS) is investigated by using a numerical ocean model. The present study focuses on the summer 2003, in which significant low salinity water is observed in the southwestern EJS in spite of similar amount of Changjiang discharge to the normal year. This paper mainly compares two experimental results for the summer 2003 (Exp. Y2003) and the normal year (Exp. NML). The simulated CDW in summer 2003 reveals remarkable changes in the pathway toward the Tsushima/Korea (T/K) Strait. The northeastward CDW behavior to the Jeju Strait, a major pathway in the normal year, is significantly reduced, while an intense southeastward extension to the along-shelf current (i.e., Taiwan-Tsushima Warm Current System) is dominant, similar to the field observation in July 2003. It is suggested that the Ekman dynamics plays an active role in remarkable changes of the CDW behavior. Namely, the reduction of northeastward behavior is associated with the dominance of strong northerly wind anomaly where the fresher bulge develops. On the other hand, the strengthened southwesterly wind over the southern region off the river mouth reinforces the extension to the along-shelf current. In consequence, the CDW below 28.0psu joins the along-shelf current in the central East China Sea, and a passage of significant low salinity water is resulted at the T/K Strait in August 2003 due to the advection by along-shelf current. The additional experiment also exhibits that the strength of along-shelf current has an impact on the passage of CDW via the T/K Strait.

<P>As the finalization of a hydrogen experiment towards the deuterium phase, the exploration of the best performance of hydrogen plasma was intensively performed in the large helical device. High ion and electron temperatures, <I>T</I> <SUB>i</SUB> and <I>T</I> <SUB>e</SUB>, of more than 6 keV were simultaneously achieved by superimposing high-power electron cyclotron resonance heating onneutral beam injection (NBI) heated plasma. Although flattening of the ion temperature profile in the core region was observed during the discharges, one could avoid degradation by increasing the electron density. Another key parameter to present plasma performance is an averaged beta value <img ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='$\left\langle \beta \right\rangle $ ' SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/0029-5515/57/10/102023/nfaa7fc2ieqn001.gif'/>. The high <img ALIGN='MIDDLE' ALT='$\left\langle \beta \right\rangle $ ' SRC='http://ej.iop.org/images/0029-5515/57/10/102023/nfaa7fc2ieqn002.gif'/> regime around 4% was extended to an order of magnitude lower than the earlier collisional regime. Impurity behaviour in hydrogen discharges with NBI heating was also classified with a wide range of edge plasma parameters. The existence of a no impurity accumulation regime, where the high performance plasma is maintained with high power heating >10 MW, was identified. Wide parameter scan experiments suggest that the toroidal rotation and the turbulence are the candidates for expelling impurities from the core region.</P>
Progress in development of neutron energy spectrometer for deuterium plasma operation in KSTAR.

<P>Two types of DD neutron energy spectrometer (NES) are under development for deuterium plasma operation in KSTAR to understand behavior of beam ions in the plasma. One is based on the state-of-the-art nuclear emulsion technique. The other is based on a coincidence detection of a recoiled proton and a scattered neutron caused by an elastic scattering of an incident DD neutron, which is called an associated particle coincidence counting-NES. The prototype NES systems were installed at J-port in KSTAR in 2012. During the 2012 and 2013 experimental campaigns, multiple shots-integrated neutron spectra were preliminarily obtained by the nuclear emulsion-based NES system.</P>

We combine data from two all-sky surveys, the Swift/Burst Alert Telescope 22 Month Source Catalog and the AKARI Point Source Catalogue, in order to study the connection between the hard X-ray (> 10 keV) and infrared (IR) properties of local active galactic nuclei (AGN). We find two photometric diagnostics are useful for source classification: one is the X-ray luminosity vs. IR color diagram, in which type 1 radio-loud AGN are well isolated from other AGN. The second one uses the X-ray vs. IR color-color diagram as a redshift-independent indicator for identifying Compton-thick (CT) AGN. Importantly, CT AGN and starburst galaxies in composite systems can also be separated in this plane based upon their hard X-ray fluxes and dust temperatures. This diagram may be useful as a new indicator to classify objects in new surveys such as with WISE and NuSTAR.
