      • Ordered Arrays of Dual-Diameter Nanopillars for Maximized Optical Absorption

        Fan, Zhiyong,Kapadia, Rehan,Leu, Paul W.,Zhang, Xiaobo,Chueh, Yu-Lun,Takei, Kuniharu,Yu, Kyoungsik,Jamshidi, Arash,Rathore, Asghar A.,Ruebusch, Daniel J.,Wu, Ming,Javey, Ali American Chemical Society 2010 Nano letters Vol.10 No.10

<P>Optical properties of highly ordered Ge nanopillar arrays are tuned through shape and geometry control to achieve the optimal absorption efficiency. Increasing the Ge materials filling ratio is shown to increase the reflectance while simultaneously decreasing the transmittance, with the absorbance showing a strong diameter dependency. To enhance the broad band optical absorption efficiency, a novel dual-diameter nanopillar structure is presented, with a small diameter tip for minimal reflectance and a large diameter base for maximal effective absorption coefficient. The enabled single-crystalline absorber material with a thickness of only 2 μm exhibits an impressive absorbance of ∼99% over wavelengths, λ = 300−900 nm. These results enable a viable and convenient route toward shape-controlled nanopillar-based high-performance photonic devices.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/nalefd/2010/nalefd.2010.10.issue-10/nl1010788/production/images/medium/nl-2010-010788_0005.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/nl1010788'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

      • Java Implementation of a Cloud-based SIM Secure Element NFC Payment Protocol

Xiaobo Ji,Fan Zeng,Bangxian Ye 보안공학연구지원센터 2016 International Journal of Security and Its Applicat Vol.10 No.12

A number of security protocols have been designed for mobile transactions using Near Field Communication technology in the last few years. However, the component architectures of these protocols are rarely implemented in Java for further evaluation. In this paper, we briefly discuss our previously proposed mobile transaction authentication protocol and extend our work by presenting its Java implementation. This implementation provides a detailed analysis based on a number of factors with respect to the security considerations of the protocol, particularly in its design stage. Thus, it provides a broad verification as well as step-by-step evaluation of the protocol specifications from its implementation point of view.

      • Flash-aware Virtual Memory System for Consumer Electronics

Xiaobo Ji,Fan Zeng 보안공학연구지원센터 2015 International Journal of Multimedia and Ubiquitous Vol.10 No.8

In this paper, an efficient flash-aware virtual memory system called FVMS is proposed for consumer electronics equipped with flash memory as secondary storage media. It introduces: 1) a redesigned read-ahead algorithm to delay the execution of page replacement algorithm, 2) a flash-aware page replacement algorithm considering access frequency, recent access time, and asymmetric I/O operation costs to reduce the number of flash page write operations and prevent serious degradation of page hit ratio, and 3) an efficient garbage collection policy taking into consideration the number of valid pages within each block and the number of erase operations on each block in order to reduce the cleaning cost and improve the degree of wear leveling. Experimental results show that the proposed FVMS outperforms existing virtual memory systems for flash memory in terms of energy consumption and the degree of wear leveling.

Proactive and reactive strategic flexibility in coping with environmental change in innovation

Zhigang Fan,Dong Wu,Xiaobo Wu 기술경영경제학회 2013 ASIAN JOURNAL OF TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION Vol.21 No.2

This study examines the effects of strategic flexibility on innovation performance byincorporating proactive and reactive strategic flexibility into the framework of strategicflexibility and the moderating effects of environmental change by subdividing this constructinto rate and turbulence. An empirical study of 180 sample Chinese manufacturing firmsshows that: (1) both proactive and reactive strategic flexibility have positive effects oninnovation performance, (2) rate of environmental change significantly positively moderatesthe relationship between proactive strategic flexibility and innovation performance as well assignificantly negatively moderates the relationship between reactive strategic flexibility andinnovation performance and (3) turbulence of environmental change significantly positivelymoderates the relationship between reactive strategic flexibility and innovation performance. The results indicate that firms that face a fast rate of environmental change should directmore attention to proactive strategic flexibility; however, firms that face a high turbulence ofenvironmental change should pay more attention to reactive strategic flexibility.

Upregulated N6-Methyladenosine RNA in Peripheral Blood: Potential Diagnostic Biomarker for Breast Cancer

        Han Xiao,Xiaobo Fan,Rui Zhang,Guoqiu Wu 대한암학회 2021 Cancer Research and Treatment Vol.53 No.2

Purpose An effective biomarker for the diagnosis of breast cancer (BC) and benign breast diseases (BBD) is crucial for improving the prognosis. We investigated whether N6-methyladenosine (m6A) can be a diagnostic biomarker of BC.Materials and Methods We detected the contents of peripheral blood m6A in 62 patients with BC, 41 patients with BBD, and 41 normal controls (NCs) using the colorimetric method. The relative expression of the m6A regulated genes methyltransferase-like 14 (METTL14) and fat mass and obesity-associated (FTO) was analyzed using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results m6A in peripheral blood RNA was significantly higher in patients with BC than that in patients with BBD (p < 0.001) or the NCs (p < 0.001). m6A was closely associated with the disease stage (from stage 0 to stage I-IV, p=0.003). The receiver operating characteristic curve of m6A contained an area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.887 in BC, which was greater than that of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) or carbohydrate antigen 153 (CA153). The combination of m6A, CEA, and CA153 improved the AUC to 0.914. The upregulated and downregulated mRNA expression of METTL14 and FTO, respectively, might contribute to the increase of m6A in patients with BC. m6A combined with METTL14 and FTO improved the AUC to 0.929 with a specificity of 97.4% in the peripheral blood of patients with BC.Conclusion The peripheral blood RNA of m6A might be a valuable biomarker for the diagnosis of BC.

Computing Pore Size Distribution in Non-woven Fibrous Filter Media

        He Bai,Xiaoming Qian,Jintu Fan,Yao Qian,Yongchao Duo,Yongsheng Liu,Xiaobo Wang 한국섬유공학회 2020 Fibers and polymers Vol.21 No.1

Fundamental understanding of transport properties of non-woven fibrous material is depended on in dept cognitionof their microstructure. Non-woven fibrous filter media are formed by the random distribution of fibers in a specific spaceexhibit a complicated pore size structure. Computing pore size distribution (PSD) is a vital parameter in studying materialtransport dynamics. In this work, a theoretical model was suggested based on the gamma distribution and fiber orientationdistribution to predict the PSD in non-woven fibrous filter media. In parallel, the analytical model was compared with theprevious PSD theories and experimental results. The 3D virtual fiber structure was constructed by using GeoDict code, andthe pore size was represented by the inscribed circle diameter. Parameters influencing the PSD were studied, including fiberdiameter, porosity, and fiber orientation. Comparison of simulation results with analytical model was made. The resultsdemonstrate that the angle between the fiber and the Z-axis has little effect on the PSD. When the porosity is consistent, smaller pores can be formed by reducing fiber diameter. With the fiber diameter is constant, larger pores can be formed byincreasing the porosity.

Potential application of ginseng in sepsis: Applications of ginseng in sepsis

        Fuxun Yang,Jiajia Li,Yunping Lan,Yu Lei,Fan Zeng,Xiaobo Huang,Xiaoxiu Luo,Rongan Liu The Korean Society of Ginseng 2023 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.47 No.3

Sepsis and septic shock affect millions of people worldwide each year with high clinical mortality rates. At present, basic research on sepsis has emerged in an endless stream, but there are few effective clinical translation results. Ginseng, a medicinal and edible representative of Araliaceae plants, contains a variety of biologically active compounds including ginsenosides, alkaloids, glycosides, polysaccharides, and polypeptides. Neuromodulation, anticancer activity, blood lipid regulation, and antithrombotic activity have been linked to ginseng treatment. At present, basic and clinical research have suggested various applications of ginseng in sepsis. In view of the different effects of various ginseng components on the pathogenesis of sepsis, and in order to further understand and develop the possible value of ginseng in sepsis, this manuscript reviews the application of various components of ginseng in the treatment of sepsis in recent years.

      • Query Aggregation in Wireless Sensor Networks

        Min Meng,Jie Yang,Hui Xu,Byeong-Soo Jeong,Young-Koo Lee,Sungyoung Lee,Xiaobo Fan 보안공학연구지원센터 2008 International Journal of Multimedia and Ubiquitous Vol.3 No.1

Wireless sensor networks have been used more and more widely with the developments of related techniques in telecommunication and computer sciences. While sensor nodes in wireless sensor networks have very limited memory spaces and power. In this paper, we propose a new query aggregation method to preprocess the query predicates. The size of the relational table can be further reduced using the aggregated query predicates. The reduced relational table can be stored on the sensor nodes. This may cause false positive but definitely no false negative. When the required data are sent back to the sink, we can do join operation between the real query predicate and the relational table again, and eliminate the redundant data.
